00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel. In this video, I will explain the ending of Lady Chatterley's
00:04Lover. Before I begin please subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and also

00:13Lady Chatterley's Lover is a 2022 drama romance film directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre.
00:18Spoilers for the film's ending follow.
00:21Lady Chatterley's Lover has a happy ending but there is a lot of conflict throughout
00:25for the lead characters.
00:27For a while, Connie Reed, Emma Corrin, and Oliver Mellors, Jack O'Connell, are happy
00:32being together without anyone the wiser. However, the glowing sheen of excitement surrounding
00:37their affair begins to ebb once word of it reaches Sir Clifford and the townspeople.
00:42Instead of hiding, Lady Chatterley confronts her husband about it, admitting that she is
00:45pregnant and wants to be with Oliver. While Sir Clifford refuses to give her a divorce,
00:50Connie decides to leave after Oliver is fired and, after some time apart, the lovers are
00:55reunited once more.
00:57For a while, Connie Reed, Emma Corrin, and Oliver Mellors, Jack O'Connell, are happy
01:02being together without anyone the wiser. However, the glowing sheen of excitement surrounding
01:07their affair begins to ebb once word of it reaches Sir Clifford and the townspeople.
01:12Instead of hiding, Lady Chatterley confronts her husband about it, admitting that she is
01:16pregnant and wants to be with Oliver. While Sir Clifford refuses to give her a divorce,
01:21Connie decides to leave after Oliver is fired and, after some time apart, the lovers are
01:25reunited once more.
01:27Why Sir Clifford is OK with Lady Chatterley having an affair but not with Oliver
01:33Sir Clifford has a big ego, and he's also classist, believing he is superior to his
01:37staff and the townspeople simply because he is a rich man with the title of Lord.
01:42Sir Clifford thought it was all right for Connie to have an affair with another man,
01:45someone whose identity was a mystery, of good social and financial standing to procreate
01:50and raise the child as their own. Sir Clifford was unable to have children after being paralyzed,
01:56and Connie sleeping with someone else to get pregnant was the only way he believed it could
01:59happen. Clifford was angry to discover that Connie was carrying Oliver's child because
02:04he thought the gamekeeper was beneath him. Sir Clifford couldn't stand the idea that
02:08a man of lesser means, his employee, no less, would be the father of a child Lord Chatterley
02:13intended to raise.
02:15The fact that Lady Chatterley chose someone like Oliver to sleep with and love was something
02:20Sir Clifford could not accept. His ego and snobbish classism were too great for Sir Clifford
02:25to get over Lady Chatterley's actions and accept the situation. What's more, Clifford
02:30was also affronted that she could love Oliver so passionately and not him, despite his belief
02:35that he gave her everything.
02:37Why She's Drawn to Oliver
02:40Visiting Oliver's cottage brought Connie much joy and solace from the loneliness and
02:43distance she experienced in her marriage with Clifford. What's more, Oliver helped awaken
02:47Connie's sexual desires and showed that there can be passion, connection, and pleasure in
02:52sex. It helped that Oliver was not pompous, but loving, caring, and tender in a way that
02:57Clifford was not. Oliver also represented a way of life that Connie perhaps missed,
03:02away from the etiquette and pretentiousness of upper-class society and its trappings.
03:07With Oliver, Connie could be free to pursue what she wanted, fueled by her own sexual
03:12freedom in a way her life with Clifford did not afford or allow.
03:16Will Clifford Eventually Divorce Connie?
03:19Clifford was adamant about not giving Lady Chatterley the divorce she wanted. It was
03:23a punishment, a way to keep Connie tied to him and unable to freely marry Oliver. It's
03:28possible Clifford's anger will thaw, and he will go on to divorce Connie. In the novel,
03:33Lady Chatterley is hopeful that Clifford would give her the divorce she seeks. It might take
03:38a long time—years, probably—until he does divorce Lady Chatterley, however, because
03:43Clifford is rather vindictive and entitled. He's thinking of his reputation when it comes
03:48to his significant other's affair, and granting her a divorce would mean he no longer holds
03:52any power over her.
03:54Why Oliver Continues to Call Connie by Her Title
03:57Oliver still calls Connie a m'lady, even after they've had sex. Though she tells him to stop,
04:03it seems Oliver can't help the formality. Continuing to call Lady Chatterley by her given
04:08title shows how aware he is of their differing social status. It's something that has been
04:12ingrained for so long that to stop would suggest they are on more equal footing when
04:16he knows they are not. Oliver understands what the consequences would be if their affair
04:20becomes public. Calling Connie a m'lady, in some ways, keeps her at a distance despite
04:26their intimacy—it's a reminder of where he stands in the grander scheme of things.
04:31Netflix's adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover is fairly faithful to the romance novel.
04:36However, the biggest difference between the book and the novel is its ending. After Clifford
04:41fires Oliver in Lawrence's novel, he leaves to go work on a farm as in the movie, but
04:45Lady Chatterley remains with her sister. Whereas in the Netflix film, Lady Chatterley ultimately
04:51finds Oliver again, joining him on the farm so that they can live out the rest of their
04:55days together, away from the very society that has judged them. Lawrence's book does
05:00end on a hopeful note, even if the lovers aren't reunited, but the movie adaptation
05:04is blatant about their happy ending.
05:06Yet another difference from book to screen involves Lady Chatterley having a brief affair
05:10with Michaelis, a playwright visiting Sir Clifford, before Oliver. Connie doesn't enjoy
05:15her time with Michaelis, though, as there is still a disconnect. What's more, when Lady
05:20Chatterley becomes pregnant, she tries to convince Clifford that the child is a man
05:24with a high social rank. In the romantic drama's film adaptation, Connie doesn't skirt the
05:30topic and quickly admits she's pregnant with her and Oliver's baby.
05:34All told, Lady Chatterley's Lover doesn't alter too much when adapting the book to screen.
05:39The Real Meaning of Lady Chatterley's Lover
05:42Lady Chatterley's Lover is all about the sexual awakening and sexual freedom. Lady
05:47Chatterley realizes she can have physical and emotional intimacy instead of being stuck
05:51in a loveless, distant marriage being held together by societal standards and empty promises.
05:57It's a feminist story that sees Connie receiving sexual pleasure and taking back her power.
06:02The film is also a commentary on social class that, invisible or not, separates people in
06:07society and determines the character of a person and who they can love. It gives the
06:11wealthy, like Clifford, an excuse to look down on others and treat them as less than
06:15human, something which Lady Chatterley's Lover is clearly against.
06:20That's all for now, folks. I would appreciate it if you could give the video a super thanks
