00:00Oh, doesn't just apply to SkyPads, it applies to F1 cars as well.
00:05Here's Lewis Hamilton.
00:08Avoiding the wall, but sliding his way around the corner.
00:11Look at the dust that is coming up.
00:13It's like we're racing in Bahrain, the amount of dust that's coming up on the surface there.
00:18Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.
00:20So, where does he go in terms of next season?
00:24Or is he looking like he might have to spend a year on the sidelines?
00:27I think it depends how he performs in the next few races.
00:29I think two races, yes, have been very impressive, but it's such early days
00:33and we know how quickly things can change in Formula 1.
00:35So, I think there's a lot riding on performance.
00:37In his position, the one thing about Franco is he dances on the limit.
00:41We saw him back here, he put it in the wall in F1.
00:44On board with Verstappen, your championship leader, of course.
00:49And hoping for a better weekend than what he had last time here
00:54and also last time out in this car.
00:57Time sheets for now.
00:58Checking both mirrors there, left and right.
01:00So, here's his challenger.
01:02And out on the track, already going purple-purple for the first two sectors.
01:061.33.44 for Verstappen.
01:09Half a second quicker, Lando Norris.
01:11Speaking to Ross Brawn about this.
01:13We were talking about Michael Schumacher.
01:14He said, yes, he likes to go out in FP1.
01:16A bit like a dog marking its favourite lamppost.
01:19He likes to mark his territory.
01:22Stay away from the lamppost here, though.
01:24Well done, George.
01:25You've managed to do that.
01:26But I do think there's something in that, though.
01:29When you're in a title battle, as you have been,
01:31and you've come out on the right end of it, J.P.,
01:33you want to get on the track.
01:34There's the yellow flag as well, where there is a double wave yellow
01:37after, or there should have been, at least.
01:39And then, therefore, drivers approaching that corner
01:41should be slowing down and preparing to stop.
01:44Yeah, yeah.
01:45So, yes.
01:46Yeah, Sergio, you could argue, potentially, yeah, there's the yellow flag.
01:50So, it's a single yellow.
01:51So, he's rejoining.
01:53He thinks about finding a gap there.
01:55Oh, and the Stampen as well.
01:57That's down to turn 14, isn't it?
01:59It is.
02:00At the end of the Esplanade.
02:02But it is.
02:03Communication can be a real problem with the radio, Steve.
02:06I actually never knew that,
02:07but the teams and the drivers are so reliant on good radio comms.
02:11So, that really does add a different challenge to the mix, I guess.
02:15It's looking like it goes quickest by a pretty decent margin on the hard tyre.
02:19Yes.
02:20And the great and not a sir, David Hill.
02:26You could just see, couldn't you, before he even went for the brakes,
02:29he was leaving out very late.
02:32And I'm not surprised to see it go straight on,
02:34but it's lucky that the drivers have that bit of a get-out, isn't it,
02:37through the inside of that corner.
02:41It looks particularly challenging, that turn 16, in this session, to be honest,
02:44with the DRS, the added speed.
02:46If he's talking about his lap, it might not be a positive word.
02:50If he's talking about Yuki Tsunoda's or Landon Norris's,
02:53it might be a more positive word.
02:55Valtteri Bottas probably hasn't got many positive words to say about anything,
02:59because there's another lap where he gets blocked.
03:01Is this pre-eleration coming out?
03:03Blocked by the red block.
03:04Yeah, I don't know what he was doing there.
03:09For the brand new set of soft tyres on,
03:11he gets traffic straight away in the second corner.
03:13That's just...
03:14And that Sergio Perez coming out, that...
03:17Sorry, can't see that.
03:18That's the moment I was talking about before.
03:20Really kicks up the dust.
03:21Yeah, a bit of understeer creeps in.
03:23Gets on the kerb, and that's what caught out Stroll last year as well.
03:37Just to check, how do you push the pit button?
03:40Is that on purpose?
03:42Can't avoid a crash with this car, I push the buttons.
03:45All the ones I have.
04:04I got blocked by Alain.
04:13Together, after Singapore, that's where we are really.
04:17So, nothing decided so far.
04:20Lauren, I appreciate that.
04:21Thanks ever so much.
04:22And we'll speak to you under the lights in a little while.
04:25That's where they thought we'd get a bit close.
04:29No.
04:30No, it's not.
04:31It's much earlier in the lap.
04:33Down by the cricket ground.
04:34Wow, exit turn 10.
04:35What a strange place to do it.
04:37Basically, he just got on the dust.
04:38So, he's carried the speed that he would have done on the racing line
04:41drifted a bit wide onto the dust.
04:44And you have to be going slower by that point.
04:47I'm trying to reduce this traction, actually.
04:52You guys got to fix this, man.
04:53I'll be as soft as I can.
04:56Sure thing, Lewis.
04:57We'll have a conversation.
04:59So, what he's saying there, Anthony, Jimmy,
05:02that he's effectively putting the old egg, the unboiled egg,
05:06between foot and accelerator, and yet still getting loads of wheelspin.
05:11What we're about to see here with Perez as he goes over the bridge.
05:14He talked about the right front not being able to slow down,
05:16and yeah, absolutely, just grabbing a bit too much there.
05:19Just as he's finished turning right,
05:21and it's actually locked over the bump as he's turning right.
05:24Just at the end of the right-hander of turn 12,
05:27it's grabbed, and that's probably why he's commenting
05:30he's struggling to slow that front right down.
05:32It's working.
05:34It's locking up too much there.
05:38Ooh, big old snap for Joe,
05:40but it sounded like he didn't lose drive there as well.
05:44Didn't sound very healthy.
05:45Yeah, no porpoising.
05:47And the first classification of the weekend.
05:50Charles Leclerc picking up where he left off this time last year
05:53by leading FP1 from Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz.
05:58Max Verstappen, fourth-fastest, three-tenths of the pace,
06:02ahead of Yuki Tsunoda, half a second down,
06:04and about a tenth of a second between him and his teammate,
06:07Daniel Ricciardo, Oscar Piastri, in between,
06:09and the other McLaren he was in the garage for a while,
06:12where they fixed an issue on the hub of his rear left wheel.
06:17Albon, and then Alonso,
06:19went off on completing the top ten outside of this.
06:22Franco Polopinto in 11th place,
06:25just by a few one-hundredths of a second.
06:27Lewis Hamilton not happy with the tyre metrics in his Mercedes,
06:31and just complaining a bit that he's driving one way,
06:34but it's not the best way, and he's really struggling to a touch.
06:37George Russell right down there as well.
06:39Not the best session for Mercedes,
06:41but it's only the first of three practice sessions,
06:43the big one, the big representative practice session,
06:46comes next.
