Liberia: Creating jobs by upcycling plastic waste

Like many other African countries, Liberia needs help managing its waste. A group of volunteers have stepped in to help ease the crisis. They're turning discarded plastic into usable items and profit from selling them.

00:00What we need to do is to make sure that there's more education about the harm of this issues

00:18of plastic.

00:19All right, like in our environment right now, everywhere you go, you have people, you know,

00:24with waste all around them, you know, coming from plastic and this is something that can

00:28be done with more education and, you know, robust work in terms of disposal of this waste

00:33that will help.

00:47So when we collect the plastic from the designated trash areas, we turn them into bag bags, rain

00:57coats as well as bricks that can be used by all Liberians to improve environmental sustainability

01:06and also serve as community empowerment.

01:23Our greatest challenge is access to critical resources and training opportunities.

01:48It is our plan to build a recycling resource center for the community to start a recycling

01:54revolution in Liberia, but access to resources is something that is really pinning us down

02:01and but we can't give up, we will keep trying.
