00:00A quick question, I want to talk to you about gun control.

00:03So you've said you support an assault weapons ban

00:07and universal background checks,

00:09and we actually learned during the debate

00:10that you are a gun owner.

00:14But in cities like Philadelphia,

00:16handguns are responsible for most homicides

00:20and violent crime.

00:21The most recent FBI data shows handguns were involved

00:24in 59% of murders in our country.

00:27How will you address the issue of the use of handguns

00:30because a push for an assault weapons ban

00:33only addresses a significant but small part of the problem?

00:39So, first of all, yes, I am a gun owner

00:42and Tim Walz is a gun owner

00:44and we're not trying to take anybody's guns away from them.

00:47But we do need an assault weapons ban.

00:49Assault weapons are designed

00:52to kill a lot of human beings quickly

00:55and have no place, I'm gonna get to it,

00:59and have no place on the streets of a civil society.

01:03We need universal background checks,

01:05which to your point about handguns

01:08is about saying that it is just reasonable

01:13to want reasonable gun safety laws

01:16that say we should do background checks

01:18that we ought to know, it's just reasonable.

01:20You might want to know

01:22before someone can buy a lethal weapon

01:25if they've been found by a court

01:26to be a danger to themselves or others.

01:28You might just want to know.

01:29And respectfully, we do understand that.

01:32But you're asking about,

01:33I'm asking specifically about handguns

01:35because many of those handguns aren't purchased in places.

01:38Universal background checks apply to handguns.

01:41Yes, but in many instances,

01:43those handguns aren't even bought lawfully, yes.

01:46Which is why I also have been very adamant for years.

01:50In fact, I myself protested at a gun show,

01:55probably 10, 15 years ago about the gun show loophole

01:58and why we need to close that.

02:00Because what ends up happening

02:02is that gun shows at flea markets,

02:04gun dealers are not under existing law in the past

02:09required to register their sales.

02:13And so you are exactly right

02:15that a lot of homicides, for example,

02:18a good number of them,

02:19I have the statistic in front of my mind,

02:23are committed with illegally purchased guns.

02:27And that's why we need to address

02:29each entry point in the issue,

02:31including universal background checks,

02:34closing the gun show loophole,

02:36and what we need to do as a general matter

02:40to focus not only on reaction to crime,

02:43but prevention of crime.

02:45So you're raising a very important issue

02:47that has many facets,

02:49including what we need to do

02:52in terms of reasonable gun safety laws

02:54and what we need to do around crime prevention,

02:57what we need to do around crime deterrence.

02:59But listen, I have personally prosecuted homicide cases.

03:04I have held the hands of mothers

03:07who have come to me crying,

03:09who have said, I only want to talk to Kamala

03:12because they knew when they sat down,

03:15I would treat them with the dignity and respect

03:17that they were entitled and due

03:20about the loss of their child, often their son,

03:25to gun violence and the need to take it seriously.

03:28And we must take it seriously.

03:30In every way, understanding it's not just about a soundbite.

03:35It's about a comprehensive approach

03:38that deals with the tragedy of, to your point,

03:40everyday gun violence in America.

03:43It's real, it has had a profound impact

03:46in terms of trauma that for the most part

03:49has gone undiagnosed and untreated.

03:52The trauma that exists in communities

03:55around the violence of losing their children,

03:58losing a brother, losing a father, an uncle.

04:01All of that must be addressed

04:03and we have to have a holistic response to it.

04:05Are there things we haven't thought about yet?

04:06Because every time we bring up this issue of gun violence,

04:10universal background checks comes up

04:12and a ban on assault weapons.

04:16Are there other solutions that you're also thinking about

04:20that will get at this issue?

04:21Absolutely.

04:23For example, part of what we did with,

04:25so we, as vice president and with the president,

04:29we were able to pass the first

04:31meaningful gun safety legislation in 30 years.

04:34And part of what that involved

04:37was millions and millions of dollars

04:40to put more mental health counselors in public schools.

04:44Right?

04:45Because we know that there is an aspect of this

04:49that is about treating the trauma

04:51and dealing with it at its source

04:54before it ends up manifesting itself in a problem.

04:57There is the work that we need to do

04:59that is about putting resources

05:01into communities around violence prevention.

05:05I've been a big advocate of that for years,

05:07which includes what we need to do

05:09around putting resources into community-based intervention

05:13that is not just requiring on the good people

05:15in the community to volunteer to do the intervention,

05:19but actually paying people to do it

05:21because it's a full-time job.

05:23It's about understanding what we need to do

05:27to, again, understand that, to your point,

05:31we have to have a holistic response to this issue

05:33and prioritize it instead of reacting to the tragedy

05:38that, sadly, they are too predictable.

05:41Let's all agree, enough of that.

05:45There are very few solutions that we haven't thought of.

05:48We need to put the resources into them.
