Inspired by the story of a Filipino who finished law at Oxford Brookes University in England,
00:06
here's his law journey in this video.
00:10
You can get a hands-up from a Filipino in England who finished law
00:15
and became an upper second-class owner at Oxford Brookes University.
00:20
When he was young, Romeo Ezequiel Ocfemia dreamed of becoming a lawyer.
00:26
His love for and study of law became his motivation to succeed.
00:32
Romeo became the president of Oxford Brookes Law Society.
00:36
He served as a legal companion in the collaborative legal outreach program of his university
00:42
and was named 2024 Student Community Champion of Brookes Union.
00:48
Romeo wanted to focus on cross-jurisdictional family law
00:53
to protect the rights of women and children.
01:03
He also planned to deepen his knowledge of international trade law,
01:08
medicinal law, and commercial law.
01:12
At present, he is continuing his Master of Law at the University of Biram,
01:18
a prestigious university known for legal research.
01:23
Let's find out the secret behind the law journey of Romeo Ocfemia
01:28
and his study tips and advice here on Sunshine Stories.
01:35
And we will be joined live via Zoom from Durham, England.
01:40
Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines, Romeo Ezequiel Ocfemia. Good morning!
01:47
Good morning. Thank you so much for having me again.
01:50
How has it been to be a law student and now a graduate of a university in England?
01:58
To be honest, coming into university, it's difficult to have that expectation
02:04
as an international student that you can achieve, you can keep up with them
02:10
and more so excel in the subject of law.
02:15
But so far, I've been welcomed by the community.
02:18
I've been encouraged by my peers and my lecturers.
02:22
And now that I have graduated, it feels so good.
02:27
And the fact that I got to celebrate that momentous occasion when I graduated
02:32
with my uncles and aunts, my mom and my dad, my sister, and my family.
02:38
It's such an overwhelming feeling.
02:40
It feels so good.
02:43
But still, I am continuing to fight, continuing to pursue my education.
02:49
And it's very exciting. Very exciting.
02:55
Congratulations. We heard that you want to deepen your knowledge
02:59
in cross-jurisdictional family law.
03:02
Why did you choose to focus on this?
03:05
So, it was very unexpected because I came to university wanting to specialize
03:11
in commercial law, litigation, arbitration, anything within the corporate discipline.
03:19
But when someone offered me a work and legal scheme in the Oxford Crown Courts,
03:26
most of the cases there were fairly and mainly based on family law.
03:34
So, I got first-hand experience.
03:36
So, there were a lot of doors that opened for me.
03:40
I got to work for specialist family law firms based in Oxford.
03:44
And I thought, why not bring it to the Philippines?
03:48
Why not gain perspectives from different jurisdictions?
03:53
What I was thinking was maybe very similar to the Philippines
03:57
is Ireland, the UK, which is entirely separate.
04:02
So, it's a very interesting field
04:05
because this will enhance what we know now in the Philippine laws.
04:10
How can we improve protecting children, protecting women,
04:15
and fairly getting that access to justice.
04:19
So, that was really my aim, why I chose.
04:22
But I chose cross-jurisdictional family law,
04:26
but I'm still exploring a lot of fields.
04:29
I wonder what was your inspiration or who was your inspiration?
04:33
Why did you pursue law?
04:37
For me, I think it's a combination of people who inspire me and people who push me.
04:44
You know, ever since I was a child,
04:48
I've seen prominent Senators in news programs
04:54
like Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago who inspired me.
04:58
But then there are also people who push me.
05:00
So, my family, my mom, my dad,
05:04
they said, you're very privileged to have this opportunity.
05:09
So, take it, make the most of it.
05:11
And that's what I think I did.
05:13
Hopefully, that's what I did.
05:15
And aside from that,
05:17
there's a support system that you can do it for one or two years.
05:23
So, that's my family here in the UK,
05:26
my uncles and aunts in Qatar, in the Philippines,
05:30
and my support system in Oxford.
05:33
So, my Oxford friends who are watching, hello.
05:36
I think it's a whole barangay.
05:42
It's a whole group of people that's continued to help me reach this point.
05:47
What are your pieces of advice to those who want to follow your footsteps?
05:54
These were really wise words from Ambassador Teddy Locsin.
05:59
When we met, he told me,
06:01
most of the opportunities that I've got were very much happy accidents or coincidences.
06:09
The only difference between a regular person and him is
06:14
he was prepared to face those challenges or face those opportunities.
06:19
And that's something I took with me.
06:21
So, just be prepared.
06:24
Be flexible in what you want to do.
06:26
And always say yes to the opportunities.
06:29
And prepare yourself for those opportunities.
06:32
Because we really don't know.
06:34
Just what I said a few seconds ago,
06:37
I came into this university wanting to pursue commercial,
06:41
not knowing there's a whole different field out there waiting for me.
06:45
And we don't know in a few years' time,
06:47
will I be a family lawyer or will I be a corporate international?
06:51
I genuinely don't know.
06:53
I just take things day by day.
06:55
And hopefully, it works out for the best.
06:58
Well, good luck to your future endeavors.
07:01
And again, congratulations.
07:03
Romeo Ezekiel Ophemia.
07:06
Thank you for joining us here on Rise and Shine Philippines.
07:10
Thank you very much.
