00:00
Live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California, it's the 76th Emmy Awards.
00:27
Please welcome your hosts, Dan and Eugene Levy.
00:42
Welcome everybody to the 76th Emmy Awards, also known as broadcast TV's biggest night
00:52
for honoring movie stars on streaming services.
00:56
We're very, very excited to be here tonight.
00:59
I think most of you know we are not stand-up comedians.
01:02
No, in fact, I wouldn't even really call us hosts.
01:05
We're more like, what, like actors acting like hosts, which is a huge gamble for us.
01:11
But if it goes well tonight, my name is pronounced Levy, not Levy.
01:16
And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.
01:23
This is actually the first opportunity that we have had to work together since our show
01:27
Schitt's Creek ended.
01:28
Unless you count the time you tried to convince Ryan Murphy to cast us as the Menendez brothers,
01:40
which...
01:41
Well, they weren't twins.
01:42
It was a bad idea.
01:43
It was a really bad idea.
01:44
All right, nevertheless, nevertheless, good to be back by your side.
01:48
You know, this is a very special night for me.
01:52
You know, I've played a lot of dads in my day.
01:54
Yes, I was a dad in American Pie, I was a dad in Finding Dory, and our show, Schitt's
01:59
Creek.
02:00
Sure.
02:01
But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad.
02:12
In Schitt's Creek.
02:14
Because it got me my first acting Emmy.
02:22
Why are we applauding bad parenting?
02:24
Anyway, we are off to a really heartwarming start.
02:28
Little bit of history here.
02:30
Emmy history, the very first Emmys host in 1949 was Walter O'Keefe.
02:37
That's true.
02:38
And tonight we are making Emmy history as the very first father-son pair to mention
02:42
Walter O'Keefe since 1949.
02:45
Now, we're all here celebrating tonight because your shows struck a chord with audiences.
02:52
Your stories, your characters, we see ourselves in them.
02:56
We've all had a teacher that's changed our lives like Quinta Brunson in Abbott Elementary.
03:04
Yeah, and we've all had a codependent, borderline, homoerotic relationship with our boss, like
03:13
Hannah Einbinder in Hacks.
03:16
No.
03:18
What?
03:20
That's not quite it.
03:22
It's not?
03:23
We're talking about universal truths.
03:25
Okay.
03:26
Like how we've all struggled to make friends in a new city, like Carrie Coon in The Gilded
03:30
Age.
03:31
Yeah.
03:33
Sure.
03:36
And how we've all done salacious tell-alls with the BBC to get back at a lying, cheating
03:40
ex like Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown.
03:42
Okay.
03:43
You know what?
03:44
I just, I don't think you're getting it.
03:49
I think I am getting it.
03:50
No, no, no, no.
03:51
Striking a chord was the point, but anyway, let's move on.
03:54
Happily, we haven't even given out a single award tonight and yet Shogun has already made
03:59
Emmy history.
04:00
At the Creative Arts Emmys held last weekend, the Shogun team took home 14 Emmys, making
04:14
it the most decorated show in a single season.
04:19
Yeah.
04:22
And deservedly so.
04:23
I mean, the attention to detail on that show, the creators of Shogun actually had their
04:27
scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten, and then translated back into English subtitles
04:34
that you missed because you were also on your phone watching Sabrina Carpenter eat a hot
04:38
wing.
04:40
The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy in history.
04:52
Now, I love the show.
04:55
I love the show, and I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether
05:00
The Bear is really a comedy, but in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making
05:06
any jokes.
05:07
It's a big year for queer representation on TV.
05:18
Nava Mao with her first nomination.
05:24
Colin Taylor with her ninth.
05:31
And then there's Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer, both recognized tonight for playing
05:34
lovers and fellow travelers.
05:38
Yeah.
05:41
Proving that you can be nominated for playing gay even if you're not straight.
05:53
And you know, Son, I'm particularly proud of my streamer, Apple TV+, which continues
06:03
to proudly and visibly align itself with the LGBTQ community.
06:14
That's not what the plus stands for.
06:16
That's not what the plus...
06:21
What does it stand for?
06:22
I don't know.
06:23
You're the one with the show on there.
06:26
Apple TV+.
06:27
Yeah.
06:28
Paramount+.
06:29
Disney+.
06:30
ESPN+.
06:31
All also not directly affiliated with the community.
06:39
Well that I knew.
06:40
Yeah.
06:41
Yeah.
06:42
I just...
06:43
Reservation Dogs has four nominations tonight.
06:51
After three excellent seasons of widespread critical acclaim, they finally received a
06:57
nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
07:00
Yeah.
07:01
So you might say the Academy voters found a show that's been creatively thriving for
07:08
years and said, hey, look what we discovered.
07:12
Baby Reindeer's nominated for 11 Emmys this year.
07:16
Sure is.
07:18
The show was both frightening and oddly relatable for everyone out there whose parents still
07:24
haven't mastered the art of texting.
07:27
Like this text I got from my dad about tonight's show.
07:32
Let's host Emmys.
07:33
Colin Farrell will be there.
07:35
You still have crush?
07:37
I didn't think these were going public.
07:40
Or this one.
07:42
Walter O'Keefe joke.
07:43
Too mean?
07:45
Sent from my iPhone.
07:47
You don't even own an iPhone.
07:49
What does it matter?
07:50
What does it matter?
07:51
And this last one.
07:53
Best ramen near me.
07:54
Okay.
07:55
I think that was just a mistake.
07:56
I think you were just Googling something.
07:57
I was hungry.
07:58
All right.
07:59
And I'm still hungry.
08:00
There are 59,000 more where those came from.
08:01
All right.
08:02
Okay.
08:03
Got it.
08:04
Before we get to our first award tonight, we just wanted to chat about acceptance.
08:08
Please.
08:09
In what can only be described as a cruel joke, two Canadians have been put in charge of playing
08:14
you off tonight.
08:15
Canadians don't like interrupting anybody.
08:19
It goes against our nature.
08:20
Confrontation in general is anxiety-inducing, especially for my 77-year-old father, okay?
08:26
I don't like it.
08:27
The man is frailer than he looks.
08:28
He gets palpitations from time to time.
08:30
I'm hearing about tendinitis.
08:31
Okay.
08:32
That's good.
08:33
That's good.
08:34
No, no.
08:35
The point, the point, the point is.
08:36
Yeah.
08:37
If you're going to say anything meaningful or emotional or, God forbid, political, just,
08:41
you know, keep it short because the pressure alone on me.
08:43
Yeah.
08:44
I don't want to be alarmist here, but having to cut you off could kill this man.
08:47
Okay.
