00:40Verb tense
00:44Verb tense
00:46A verb tells about an action,
00:49while a tense tells about the time.
00:52Thus, the tense of a verb tells us
00:56when, in time, an action occurred.
01:00There are three simple verb tenses.
01:05Simple present,
01:07simple past,
01:09and simple future.
01:12Let's take up each one by one.
01:21Simple present tense
01:24The simple present tense indicates an action that is happening now.
01:33The dog barks at the mailman.
01:37I clean my room.
01:40I fold the laundry.
01:43She mops the floor.
01:46I always listen to music.
01:49I work very hard.
01:54All these sentences are in the present tense,
01:58and in each, the verb is underlined.
02:02Sentences in the present tense use the base form of the verb.
02:08You don't need to change the verb at all in this tense.
02:18We also use the present tense when,
02:21for example,
02:23we talk about something that is permanent.
02:28I live in a house.
02:31The sun rises from the east.
02:36Or, when we talk about how frequently something happens.
02:42I always listen to music.
02:46I never forget my chores.
02:51However,
02:53if we're using the pronouns he, she, or it,
02:59then we add an S to the end of a present tense verb,

03:06She asks for help.
03:10He mows the lawn.
