00:20Brazil is known as the land of samba and carnival,
00:25but it's also becoming famous for hair-raising season
00:28finales on the Formula One circuit.
00:30So it was in 2008.
00:32Welcome to Formula One Debrief,
00:34looking back on the highlights
00:36of a wild Brazilian Grand Prix 2008.
00:40Hello again, everyone. I'm Bob Barsha.
00:42We thought it would be hard to top the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix
00:46where Kimi Raikkonen came from behind
00:48to snatch the world championship for drivers away
00:51from Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
00:54But 2008 was something else altogether.
00:57Hamilton coming in with a seven-point lead
00:59in the championship,
01:00needing just a fifth-place finish or better to clinch,
01:03while Felipe Massa needed a race win,
01:05went out there and got exactly that.
01:08With me to talk about the highlights
01:10of this final round of the world championship,
01:12of course, as always, David Havza and Steve Matchett.
01:15Last turn, last lap, last race.
01:17You couldn't ask for anything more, I think, David.
01:20Well, we've been saying for six or seven races now,
01:22the way that Massa and Hamilton have been going up and down
01:25one making a silly mistake,
01:27then another making a silly mistake,
01:28then somebody having a sublime run like Massa did
01:30in a couple of places like Valencia.
01:32We've been saying all year,
01:33well, it's probably going to go down to the wire.
01:35But, I mean, nobody, nobody could have thought
01:37that it would be anything like this much going down to the wire
01:41as you just said.
01:42Last corner, last lap, last race.
01:45I mean, you couldn't, if you wrote a script like that,
01:48throw it out and say,
01:49how could that possibly be? It doesn't work that way.
01:52The teams put so much effort into this race.
01:55It was, I mean, it was just astonishing
01:57to watch the whole thing unfold.
01:59Absolutely.
02:00The technological battle from round one to round 18
02:04has been fascinating.
02:05And, of course, BMW, as we've said in the broadcast,
02:08were kind of scratching their head,
02:09wondering where's our pace gone?
02:11What's happened to us?
02:12Well, we know now what happened to BMW's pace.
02:14Actually, nothing.
02:15They did a very good job and they come on well.
02:17But it was McLaren and it was Ferrari
02:19that were just taking the battle to each other
02:21in such a strong way
02:22that everybody else just got left behind in the wake.
02:25And as Ron Dennis said coming into this race,
02:28that we made the car 0.15 of a second a lap quicker
02:32from the previous race until the final race in Brazil.
02:35And it was the most expensive 0.15 second
02:37in the history of McLaren.
02:39That's how much they were trying to develop the car
02:41right up until the last second to take the fight to Ferrari.
02:44And we can be sure Ferrari did the same thing.
02:46So I suppose it's only appropriate
02:47that Hamilton and Massa,
02:48the two drivers representing
02:50the most dominant teams in the sport,
02:52would go toe-to-toe in this final race.
02:54Well, of course, Massa to me
02:55has been the revelation of the season.
02:57I mean, everybody thought
02:58going into the 2008 season
02:59it'd be Raikkonen and Hamilton
03:00if it was going to be opposing teams.
03:02And Massa got off to a pretty shaky start in Australia
03:05and wasn't any better in Malaysia.
03:07Then, of course,
03:08absolutely cleaned up with his clock in Bahrain.
03:10And from that moment on,
03:11really, it's been Massa and Hamilton and Raikkonen
03:13has been left on the sidelines,
03:15even though he does have 10 fastest laps.
03:17So it's the skills, isn't it?
03:19It's just a bit hidden.
03:20Yeah, I think Formula 1
03:21has never seen better days.
03:22Of course, there was an awful lot
03:24to talk about in this race
03:25and in our summary of the entire season.
03:27So we'll take a break and come back
03:29to start off the Brazilian weekend
03:31with qualifying.
03:32Stay with us.
03:36Oh, he improves!
03:37Wow!
03:38He improves by 85,000!
03:42All in Sector 3!
03:43Wow!
03:4417.3 in Sector 3, you're right.
03:46The crowd is going crazy.
03:49Hamilton's out!
03:50Hamilton to second!
03:57Speed's presentation of Formula 1 debrief
04:00is brought to you by
04:01the Orange Savings Account

04:03Save your money.
04:07Welcome back to Formula 1 debrief.
04:09Looking back on the final race
04:10of the 2008 season,
04:11the Brazilian Grand Prix
04:13from Sao Paulo.
04:14We talked often during
04:15Formula 1 season
04:16about the importance of qualifying.
04:18But never was it more important
04:19than in Brazil
04:20where the circuit has
04:21a very difficult
04:22first turn complex,
04:23likely to see collisions
04:25and other sorts of accidents.
04:26And certainly, Felipe Massa
04:28and Lewis Hamilton
04:29wanted no part of that.
04:30So they wanted to get
04:31right up front
04:32and one of them
04:33was able to accomplish that.
04:34So let's join qualifying
04:35from Interlagos,
04:36as we called it.
04:3730 seconds to go.
04:39Felipe Massa
04:40on Provisional Poll.
04:4430 seconds on the clock.
04:48Oh, the crowd.
04:50Massa not as quick
04:51as he was on that lap before.
04:55Right now, he doesn't need to be.
04:56He's the Provisional Poll sitter
04:58and he'll get another lap
04:59if he wants it.
05:02Oh, he improves.
05:03Wow.
05:04He improves by 85,000.
05:08All in Sector 3.
05:09Wow.
05:1017-3 in Sector 3.
05:12You're right.
05:13The crowd is going crazy.
05:15What will Hamilton do?
05:16Hamilton to second.
05:21Oh, boy.
05:22Now watch Raikkonen.
05:23Jamie Raikkonen coming up here.
05:25Is he going to snatch away
05:26that front row from Hamilton?
05:27And remember,
05:28Alonso was quickest this morning.
05:32Bourdain goes to ninth.
05:33Jamie Raikkonen.
05:34Raikkonen to second.
05:36He bumps Hamilton.
05:37Here comes Alonso.
05:38Alonso.
05:39Fifth.
05:40Nope.
05:41He won't be in the mix.
05:42Kovalainen.
05:44Here comes Trulli.
05:45Kovalainen still out there.
05:46Trulli to second.
05:47Trulli to two.
05:48Hamilton is on the outside
05:49of Row 2.
05:50Now Kovalainen.
05:51And his own teammate
05:52could bump him to Row 3.
05:53Alonso.
05:54Get over it.
05:55Fifth.
05:56Oh, that's it.
05:58Masa Trulli,
05:59Raikkonen,
06:00Hamilton,
06:01then Kovalainen
06:02and Alonso.
06:07So Felipe Massa
06:08took the first step
06:09doing what he needed to do
06:11to try to wrest the lead
06:12in the championship
06:13away from Lewis Hamilton.
06:14Here are the results
06:15of qualifying.
06:16Well, look at that surprise there.
06:17Jarno Trulli in the Toyota
06:18alongside him on the front row.
06:19Then Kimi Raikkonen
06:20and Lewis Hamilton
06:21making up Row 2.
06:22The second McLaren
06:23of Kovalainen
06:24and Fernando Alonso
06:25again having a wonderful run
06:26in the Renault.
06:27Then Sebastian Vettel
06:28again showing his form.
06:29Nick Heidfeldt,
06:30Sebastian Bourdain
06:31and Timo Glock in the second
06:32of the Toyota.
06:33Here's how they lined up
06:3411 through to 15.
06:35These fellas did not make it
06:36out of Q2.
06:37Nelson Piquet Jr.
06:38there for Renault.
06:39Mark Webber for Red Bull.
06:40And down the bottom
06:41is Rubens Barrichello
06:42for 15.
06:43And these guys,
06:44they didn't make it
06:45out of Q1.
06:46Kaz Nakajima
06:47for Williams and Jensen
06:48butting in the Honda.
06:49Nico Rosberg,
06:50Giancarlo Fisichella
06:51and Adrian Sutil
06:52down there in P20.
06:54Afterwards,
06:55our Peter Windsor
06:56spoke with the pole sitter.
07:00A lot of people
07:01in the pit lane
07:02thought that Lewis
07:03would go super light
07:04in Q3.
07:05It appears as if he didn't.
07:06But how much of that
07:07affect the way
07:08you approach strategy?
07:09You said earlier
07:10that you're just
07:11doing your own thing
07:12but in reality
07:13that would have been
07:14significant in terms
07:15of his fuel load.
07:16Well,
07:17um,
07:18I think we went
07:19for the best strategy
07:20for us.
07:21So,
07:22um,
07:23I don't know his fuel.
07:24I don't know if he had
07:25a good or bad lap.
07:26So,
07:27that's quite difficult
07:28to,
07:29to say.
07:30But,
07:31I would be
07:32a bit surprised
07:33if he's very heavy.
07:34Now,
07:35I suppose it's,
07:36uh,
07:37it's not unusual
07:38to focus on the
07:39championship contenders.
07:40But,
07:41Jarno Trulli,
07:42I think,
07:43was a great story
07:44in qualifying.
07:45Thursday night,
07:46lying in a hospital bed,
07:47being treated
07:48by the Toyota team
07:49doctors.
07:50Then he comes out
07:51on Saturday
07:52and puts Toyota
07:53on the front row
07:54for the first time
07:55in 55 races.
07:56Where did that come from?
07:57Well,
07:58I don't know.
07:59But,
08:00wherever it came from,
08:01it was an extraordinary
08:02time.
08:03And,
08:04obviously,
08:05the Toyota was right
08:06in there because
08:07he fell right on
08:08their face,
08:09the Williams.
08:10And, of course,
08:11Robert Kubitz,
08:12like you were saying,
08:13from BMW,
08:14wondering where
08:15their face had gone.
08:16Robert Kubitz
08:17was really wondering
08:18where his face
08:19had gone down there
08:20in 13th.
08:21And,
08:22of course,
08:23we'd all been,
08:24Peter had done
08:25that poll
08:26of all the sort
08:27of experts
08:28in the paddock
08:29the day before.
08:30If you were Hamilton,
08:31seven seconds
08:32in the lead,
08:33seven points
08:34in the lead,
08:35where would you
08:36have been?
08:37I mean,
08:38he couldn't have been
08:39in the worst spot.
08:40And Ron Dennis
08:41from McLaren,
08:42Steve,
08:43defended their strategy.
08:44He seemed very confident
08:45about the fact
08:46in fourth place,
08:47that's just fine
08:48for Lewis to start.
08:49Well,
08:50it sums up
08:51McLaren's mentality
08:52and their approach
08:53to motor racing.
08:54It doesn't matter
08:55what anybody else thinks.
08:56It doesn't matter
08:57what Ferrari may think
08:58or Toyota may think
08:59or Renault may think
09:00or what the pundits
09:01may think.
09:02We have an optimum
09:03strategy.
09:04We have computer
09:05servers.
09:06We think
09:07we've got it sorted.
09:08But I suppose
09:09the one thing
09:10the supercomputers
09:11cannot account for
09:12is the thing
09:13you just mentioned,
09:14what anybody else
09:15might do.
09:16I mean,
09:17they had to know
09:18that putting Lewis Hamilton
09:19on the outside
09:20of the second row
09:21was not only
09:22on the dirty line,
09:23but also left him
09:24vulnerable down
09:25in the first turn.
09:26I would have thought so,
09:27but there it is.
09:28Like Steve said,
09:29Ron Dennis
09:30and the McLaren team,
09:31I mean,
09:32they've got the thing
09:33strategized out
09:34for in the first turn
09:35because that happens
09:36so often in Brazil.
09:37In a moment,
09:38we'll see what
09:39actually transpired.
09:40Stay with us
09:41for more
09:42of Formula 1 Debrief.
09:43Good launch by Masa
09:45from Poles.
09:46Jarno truly leads
09:47the cars
09:48on the dirty line
09:49and that includes
09:50Lewis Hamilton
09:51who gets away slowly.
09:52He'll have
09:53Koval Lehmann
09:54at his right rear wheel
09:55as they dive
09:56into the Senna S's.
09:59Debrief focusing
10:00on the final round
10:01of the 2008 season
10:02here on Speed,
10:03the Brazilian Grand Prix
10:05from Sao Paulo.
10:07Now,
10:08we talked at the top
10:09of the show
10:10about the championship
10:11scenario coming in.
10:12After one of the most
10:13competitive
10:14Formula 1 seasons ever,
10:15we were down
10:16to the final
10:17two contenders.
10:18Lewis Hamilton
10:19with a 7-point lead
10:20over Felipe Massa.
10:21Here's what each
10:22driver needed to do
10:23if he was to win
10:24his first
10:25World Championship.
10:26For Hamilton,
10:27well, it was a pretty
10:28smooth path.
10:29Any finish in the top 5
10:30would lock up the title
10:31no matter what
10:32Felipe Massa did,
10:33even winning the race.
10:35On the other hand,
10:36Massa knew he needed
10:37to win or finish
10:38second to have
10:39any mathematical chance
10:40of coming from behind
10:41to beat Hamilton.
10:42But in order to do so,
10:43Lewis Hamilton
10:44needed to finish
10:45on the very edge
10:46of the point scoring finishes
10:48or perhaps even better
10:49for Massa's purposes,
10:50no points at all.
10:52And so everyone had
10:53their plan in place.
10:54Massa was on pole.
10:55Hamilton starting fourth.
10:56Everybody getting set
10:57to race
10:58when the last thing
10:59anybody was probably
11:00thinking about
11:01when they came to the grid
11:02in Brazil happened.
11:03In fact,
11:04our own Peter Windsor
11:05said, boys,
11:06it looks like rain
11:07is not going to reach
11:08the racetrack.
11:09And then we had this
11:10bizarre cloudburst.
11:11It must have been
11:12a half an inch deep.
11:14It was pretty
11:15incredible.
11:16It lasted for no time
11:17at all,
11:18but it absolutely
11:19poured down
11:20on the grid.
11:21And then we were
11:22to find out after
11:23when they did their
11:24first pace lap.
11:25Once it got down
11:26to turn four,
11:27in fact,
11:28there was no rain
11:29over that side
11:30of the track at all.
11:31And as they came up
11:32the hill again,
11:33it got wet again.
11:34So it was one of those
11:35nasty cloudbursts.
11:36It just wiped out
11:37half the circuit.
11:38And of course,
11:39they gave the teams
11:40ten minutes.
11:41And what do you suppose
11:42they did in that time
11:43other than bringing out
11:44the treaded rain tires?
11:45Because there was no question
11:46that they needed those.
11:47Yeah, absolutely.
11:48Well, it's an anomaly
11:49in the sporting regulations,
11:50really,
11:51that claims that the cars
11:52must have wheels
11:53and tires fitted
11:54five minutes prior
11:55to roll off.
11:56Well, teams over
11:57the last few years
11:58have always said,
11:59well, what if?
12:00And today we had that
12:01what if.
12:02If it rains
12:03and you need to start
12:04the intermediate tires,
12:05the teams would be
12:06technically breaking
12:07the regulations
12:08to change tires.
12:09So the FIA
12:10delayed the race
12:11by ten minutes.
12:12This gives everybody
12:13the possibility
12:14of doing two things.
12:15Switching to intermediates
12:16or full wets
12:17or staying on the dry tires
12:18if they so desire.
12:19It also gives the FIA
12:20the possibility
12:21to look at the weather
12:22and see whether or not
12:23they will make
12:24a compulsory decision
12:25to make sure everybody
12:26starts on full wets
12:27and starts behind
12:28the safety car.
12:29And it turns out
12:30that one prominent driver
12:31chose to stay on dry tires,
12:33Robert Kubica.
12:34And he would pay
12:35for that later on.
12:36But let's not get
12:37ahead of ourselves.
12:38With everybody finally
12:39on their tires of choice
12:40and ready to go.
12:41And you have to assume
12:42Lewis Hamilton
12:43was thinking
12:44this could be exactly
12:45what I need.
12:46He being one of the best
12:47wet weather drivers
12:48in the sport.
12:49Here we go.
12:50Massa getting a great
12:51getaway for Ferrari.
12:52Or Jarno Trulli
12:53on the dirty line.
12:54Also got a good one
12:55for Toyota
12:56and managed to get
12:57to turn one ahead
12:58of Kimi Räikkönen.
12:59Kimi Räikkönen got around
13:00Lewis Hamilton there.
13:01And Sebastian Vettel
13:02got around Alonso too
13:03who was right behind
13:04Hamilton.
13:05But that didn't last long.
13:06It lasted down at turn two.
13:07And poor old David Coulthard
13:08in his last race
13:09going into turn two
13:10got tagged
13:11by Rosberg's Williams.
13:13Here they are coming
13:14down to turn four.
13:15You saw Kovalainen
13:16getting pushed to the edge
13:17there by Alonso
13:18who'd made a recovery
13:19and got back past Vettel.
13:20And here they go
13:21side by side
13:22through turn four.
13:23Kovalainen dropping
13:24behind Alonso.
13:26Let's go back to the start
13:27and watch Hamilton's
13:28getaway.
13:29Remember he's in fourth
13:30place before he even
13:31turns a wheel.
13:32And he cannot afford
13:33to lose positions.
13:36Hamilton very slow
13:38or very cautious
13:39as they say off the mark.
13:40And also Alonso
13:41particularly slow
13:42off the mark.
13:43I thought Alonso
13:44would have had more pace
13:45off the start there
13:46and try to get ahead
13:47of Hamilton.
13:48But he didn't.
13:49Really got balked
13:50and lost a lot of positions.
13:51Here he is back here.
13:52Yep.
13:53Sebastian Vettel
13:54came right across his bow
13:55and the two-time world
13:56champ was lucky
13:57he didn't lose
13:58the front wing altogether.
13:59And there is the incident.
14:00Nico Rosberg's Williams
14:01tipping David Coulthard
14:02into a spin
14:03that would claim
14:04Rosberg's teammate
14:05David Coulthard.
14:06Rosberg drove away.
14:07Rosberg drove away
14:08and miraculously
14:09so did Nakajima.
14:10Look here.
14:11It's a pretty severe
14:12belt.
14:13He lifts his wheels
14:14off the road.
14:15Spins him through
14:16360 degrees.
14:17And somehow he carried
14:18on.
14:19But of course it was
14:20meant that D.C.
14:21in his last race was out.
14:22Here you see it on board
14:23going through turn one
14:24there.
14:25Left-hand lock.
14:26Just starts to put on
14:27right-hand lock
14:28for turn two.
14:29Boom!
14:30Bumped in the back.
14:31And that was a shame.
14:32We lost our helmet
14:33cam in the person
14:34of David Coulthard.
14:35You have to feel
14:36for the Red Bull driver.
14:37I mean the only man
14:38to start 70 or more races
14:39for two teams.
14:40Of course he was a
14:41McLaren driver
14:42for quite a long time.
14:43David Coulthard
14:44walks back to the paddock
14:45after less than a lap.
14:47It is absolutely
14:48the worst thing in the world
14:49to be knocked out
14:50of any race
14:51on the first lap.
14:52I mean a first corner.
14:53I mean it really is
14:54just the pits.
14:55And I can't tell you
14:56the depths of feeling
14:57that go through you.
14:58It's just so grotesquely
14:59agonizing.
15:00And to do that
15:01on your very last race.
15:02I mean just
15:03He was very pragmatic
15:04about it.
15:05He handled it
15:06like a gentleman.
15:07You know Williams
15:08gave me my first start
15:09in Formula 1 of course
15:10when he came in
15:11after the awful accident
15:12that killed Ayrton Senna.
15:13Got his first drive
15:14with Williams
15:15and he said
15:16I know it's Williams
15:17that finished my career
15:18in Formula 1
15:19by taking me out
15:20in my final race
15:21when I was driving
15:22for Red Bull.
15:23A bit of dark
15:24Scottish humour there.
15:25Absolutely.
15:26Now of course
15:27that kind of an incident
15:28brought out the safety car
15:29and that would back up
15:30the field.
15:31As we pointed out earlier
15:32Williams was off
15:33just ahead of that accident
15:34involving David Coulthard
15:36and so he found himself
15:37out of his home Grand Prix
15:38in his first appearance.
15:40Felipe Massa
15:41out front
15:42over Jarno Trulli
15:43Kimi Räikkönen
15:45and Lewis Hamilton
15:46back into 4th place.
15:48On the restart
15:49Massa got a great getaway
15:50and you see
15:51all the rooster tails
15:52of moisture
15:53but as David Hobbs
15:54pointed out
15:55elsewhere in the lap
15:56the track was virtually dry.
15:58When they go through
15:59turns 1 and 2 here
16:00it's very wet
16:01especially through 3 there
16:02you can see it running
16:03across the road
16:04and then as they come out
16:05of turn 3 there
16:06and go down towards
16:07turn 4
16:08miraculously it dried up
16:09but of course
16:10after you go through
16:11turn 4
16:12it's a sharp left
16:13and you start going up
16:14the hill again
16:15and now you're sort of
16:16behind the grandstand
16:17and of course
16:18it's very wet up
16:19on all those twisty bits
16:20as well so
16:21it was a tricky situation
16:22for these guys
16:23and of course
16:24again being in Brazil
16:25temperatures up in
16:26the high 80s
16:27you knew it wasn't
16:28going to last long
16:29on the track
16:30about 10 laps in
16:31the track was
16:32completely dry
16:33and that meant
16:34that all of those cars
16:35on the intermediates
16:36were going to start
16:37hitting the pit lane
16:38here comes Sebastian Vettel
16:39and Fernando Alonso
16:40we should also point out
16:41that Robert Kubica
16:42who stayed on the dries
16:43came in to switch
16:44to wets
16:45so he's already
16:46made one pit stop
16:47at this point
16:48he is running stone
16:49last in the field
16:50Yeah it was Robert Kubica
16:51that was catching us out
16:52and also catching
16:53engineers out in the pit lane
16:54because
16:55we didn't realize
16:56that Robert Kubica
16:57decided to start
16:58the Grand Prix
16:59with dry weather tires
17:00he was the first guy
17:01to come into the pit
17:02to change tires
17:03we thought he'd
17:04changed onto dry weather tires
17:05in fact
17:06he'd taken intermediate
17:07tires on
17:08and that was
17:09skewing all the lap times
17:10and throwing the engineers
17:11off deciding
17:12what to do
17:13with tire change
17:14a lap later
17:15here came Felipe Massa
17:16to switch to dries
17:17but of course
17:18the pit lane
17:19is still wet
17:20and slippery
17:21so you've got to
17:22be pretty careful
17:23stopping in the pit box
17:24one
17:25and of course
17:26once they go across
17:27the white line
17:28a tight left hand turn
17:29there
17:30lap 12
17:31yet another lap later
17:32here comes
17:33Truly
17:34Raikkonen
17:35and Lewis Hamilton
17:36now what more
17:37anomaly was thrown up
17:38by these early pit stops
17:39for tire changes
17:40is the fact that
17:41all the fuel strategy
17:42was out of the window
17:43we had no idea
17:44how much fuel
17:45was on board
17:46all of these cars
17:47going into the Grand Prix
17:48of course
17:49and we were trying
17:50to figure out
17:51around lap 15 to 17
17:52would see the
17:53first of the two
17:54stoppers come in
17:55but of course
17:56when you come in
17:57you don't want to refuel
17:58the cars anyway
17:59so now it was
18:00it was a lottery
18:01for the second fuel stop
18:02and this is when
18:03things started to look
18:04grim
18:05for Lewis Hamilton
18:06while Felipe Massa
18:07going out the bottom
18:08of your screen
18:09holds on to the race lead
18:10Lewis Hamilton
18:11had faded to 7th
18:12by this point
18:13yeah
18:14and was going to get
18:15stuck behind
18:16one of the Toyotas there
18:17and also
18:18he got stuck behind
18:19Fischer Keller too
18:20in one of the
18:21Force India cars
18:22so things were
18:23looking a bit gloomy
18:24for Hamilton
18:25at this point
18:26he was automatically
18:27the provisional
18:28world champion
18:29but that was a title
18:30that was going to be
18:31tossed back and forth
18:32all day long
18:33in Brazil
18:34so the race is underway
18:35everybody coming
18:36back to the drives
18:37we'll be back
18:38with Formula 1 debrief
18:39in just a moment
18:42whoa
18:43I don't know
18:44if he got no damage
18:45the way he got speared
18:46by Kulthar
18:47on board with Hamilton
18:48going by Trulli
18:50Alonso sets last lap
18:53blocked it
18:55Bordet
18:56gets by Trulli
19:01welcome back
19:02to the circuit in Sao Paulo
19:03once known as Interlagos
19:04now named for the
19:051975 winner
19:06of the Brazilian Grand Prix
19:08Jose Carlos Pache
19:10welcome back to
19:11Formula 1 debrief
19:12we're about a dozen laps
19:13into the race
19:14after a rain shower
19:15soaked the track
19:16in places
19:17still pretty slick
19:18but virtually all
19:19of the cars
19:20on dry weather tires
19:21and that led to
19:22some amazing
19:23demonstrations
19:24of spin catching
19:25and other car
19:26control exercises
19:27from the entire field
19:28let's go on board
19:29with Lewis Hamilton
19:30at this point
19:31running in 7th place
19:32but getting by
19:33Jarno Trulli
19:34for 6th
19:35and as you see
19:36Trulli
19:38Trulli having
19:39no fun at all
19:40in his Toyota
19:41Trulli getting
19:42sideways there
19:43big time
19:44there you see
19:45Hamilton going by
19:46there's Glock right behind
19:47Trulli
19:48then this incredible
19:49slide
19:50and how he holds
19:51onto it
19:52goodness
19:53look at it
19:54just absolutely
19:55completely 90 degrees
19:56to the direction
19:57of travel
19:58and his teammate
19:59Timo Glock
20:00and Sebastian Bordet
20:01get by
20:02but we should point out
20:03at this point
20:04Felipe Massa
20:05continues to lead
20:06the race for Ferrari
20:07and Hamilton
20:08in 6th place
20:09now that still means
20:10as they stood
20:11Massa was in position
20:12to clinch the
20:13world championship
20:14so that kind of
20:15worked against
20:16Lewis Hamilton's
20:17plan of staying
20:18out of trouble
20:19and now
20:20Fisichella's
20:21Force India Ferrari
20:22ahead of him
20:23yeah cause the
20:24Force India guys
20:25when they came in
20:26to try and change
20:27from the wet
20:28yeah I mean
20:29the opposite lot
20:30these guys
20:31it's so quick
20:32they're just so precise
20:33at putting it on
20:34and just pulling it
20:35off at the right time
20:36too
20:37but Fisichella
20:38was on the super soft
20:39as you can see
20:40from Hamilton's car
20:41he hasn't got the
20:42white stripe
20:43so he's on the
20:44hard of the two
20:45compounds
20:46and it was
20:47certainly helping
20:48Fisichella
20:50and that would be
20:51probably his most
20:52harrowing moment
20:53of the race
20:54absolutely
20:55you can see
20:56both wheels
20:57coming off
20:58there's his girlfriend
20:59getting very excited
21:00Paul Scherzinger
21:01jumping up and down
21:02since when is a
21:03cocktail dress
21:04part of pit lane
21:05uniform
21:06I never quite
21:07figured that out
21:08well that put
21:09Lewis Hamilton
21:10up into 5th place
21:11seizing the
21:12championship advantage
21:13away from
21:14Felipe Massa
21:15but we still had
21:16a long way to go
21:18there is Massa
21:19with Sebastian Vettel
21:20behind him
21:21trading fast lap
21:22lap after lap
21:23Vettel was another
21:24one of the great
21:25stories in this race
21:26I think
21:27Sebastian Vettel
21:28has been a great
21:29story this year
21:30he ended up 8th in
21:31the championship
21:32with 35 points
21:33and going to Germany
21:34he had 5
21:35half way through
21:36the season
21:37he had 5 points
21:38knocked out of
21:39the first 4 races
21:40on the first lap
21:41but towards the
21:42end of the season
21:43he has just come
21:44on strong
21:45he was trading
21:46in Italy
21:47but nevertheless
21:48you are talking
21:49about the
21:50works Ferrari
21:51and the
21:52Toro Rosso
21:53even though it
21:54has a Ferrari
21:55engine
21:56as you mentioned
21:57during the race
21:58broadcast
21:59this was the
22:00last thing
22:01that Felipe Massa
22:02wanted to see
22:03was a guy like
22:04Vettel all over
22:05in 4th position
22:06but it turned out
22:07Vettel was late
22:08on fuel
22:09and on lap 27
22:10he came in
22:11to make his
22:12stop
22:13when Vettel
22:14returned to the
22:15race
22:16Vettel and
22:17Hamilton
22:18would be seeing
22:19a lot of each
22:20other later
22:21on in the race
22:22meanwhile
22:23Massa up front
22:24with Fernando
22:25Alonso
22:26as you see
22:27now running
22:28in 2nd place
22:29and Alonso
22:30having said
22:31before the race
22:32that he would
22:33do anything
22:34he could
22:35to help
22:36Massa win
22:37the championship
22:38he figured
22:39that the 2 time
22:40world champion
22:41from Spain
22:42would not
22:43challenge
22:44Vettel
22:45so you see
22:46just coming
22:47into the picture
22:48in the company
22:49of Timo Glock's
22:50Toyota
22:51so with that
22:52the race entered
22:53a fairly stable
22:54stage with the
22:552 protagonists
22:56running 1st and
22:574th for much
22:58of the way
22:59but it turned
23:00out Mother Nature
23:01was not finished
23:02with the Brazilian
23:03Grand Prix yet
23:04and Sebastian
23:05Vettel
23:06the winner at
23:07Monza in the
23:08rain earlier this
23:09year
23:10had something to
23:11show
23:12Lewis Hamilton
23:13coming in
23:14from Brazil
23:25Welcome back to
23:26Formula 1 Debrief
23:27highlighting the
23:28final event of the
23:292008 season here on
23:30Speed
23:31the Brazilian
23:32Grand Prix
23:33Welcome back
23:34approaching the
23:35halfway point of the
23:36race now
23:37and as Steve
23:38Matchett
23:39mentioned earlier
23:40with all the
23:41early stopping
23:42he was actually
23:43with every stop
23:44especially so
23:45when Timo Glock
23:46running 5th at the
23:47time came in for
23:48what turned out to
23:49be a problematic
23:50stop
23:51Yeah we're on lap
23:5236 so Timo Glock
23:53coming in from P5
23:54and you can see
23:55problems getting the
23:56fuel hose connected
23:57onto the coupling
23:58on the car
23:59poor old Timo
24:00Glock started
24:01P10 on the grid
24:02had worked his way
24:03up to P5
24:04and then Toyota
24:05threw it all away
24:06because of that
24:07figure right there
24:0814.5 seconds
24:09all the work by the
24:10team to get onto
24:11then by the
24:12driver and the
24:13team to get up to
24:145th and they
24:15threw it all away
24:16at this point by
24:17just not being able
24:18to get the fuel hose
24:19connected
24:20and of course that
24:21would have more
24:22ramifications down
24:23the road that we
24:24were yet to know
24:25about but there
24:26were certainly
24:27major ramifications
24:28as a result of that
24:29long stop
24:30he fell well back
24:31down the running
24:32order we all
24:33figured well that's
24:34it for Timo
24:35Glock's final race
24:36of the season but
24:37boy how wrong we
24:38were
24:39now let's pick up
24:40the pace
24:41for his second
24:42stop scheduled
24:43stop and Ferrari
24:44have done this
24:45a thousand times
24:46over they just
24:47needed a nice
24:48steady pit stop
24:49so the lead now
24:50goes to Alonso
24:51who is running
24:52second behind
24:53Massa
24:54but Massa
24:55take on enough
24:56fuel to go the
24:57rest of the
24:58race distance
24:59and there you
25:00see Hamilton's
25:01relative position
25:02as Massa
25:03re-enters
25:04Steve mentioned
25:05Alonso now in
25:06the lead
25:07three laps later
25:08in comes the
25:09Alonso
25:10running in the
25:11lead there
25:12because of Massa
25:13taking his pit stop
25:14the cycle of pit
25:15stops begins
25:16Alonso comes in
25:17the next lap
25:18just under ten
25:19seconds total time
25:20spent as Martin
25:21Whitmarsh from
25:22McLaren
25:23monitoring what
25:24Renault are doing
25:25and in comes
25:26Lewis Hamilton
25:27for his second
25:28scheduled pit stop
25:29of the Grand Prix
25:30now I said during
25:31the broadcast
25:32look how calm
25:33and collected
25:34everybody is
25:35around the
25:36McLaren pit
25:37an absolutely
25:38fantastic work
25:39by McLaren
25:40and they
25:41release the car
25:42faultlessly
25:43back into the
25:44pit lane
25:45and into the
25:46hands of Lewis
25:47Hamilton
25:48now ten laps
25:49later
25:50Sebastian Vettel
25:51whom we saw
25:52a pit earlier
25:53a bit out of
25:54sequence
25:55comes in
25:56he was in
25:57second at this
25:58point
25:59quite a year
26:00for Toro Rosso
26:01at this point
26:02Vettel figured
26:03to come out
26:04right about on
26:05the same piece
26:06of racetrack
26:08and there goes
26:09Hamilton
26:11ahead of the
26:12lapped BMW Sauber
26:13of Robert Kubica
26:14as Vettel
26:15re-enters
26:16and at this point
26:17as you pointed out
26:18David during the broadcast
26:19Kubica was actually
26:20running fairly strongly
26:21at this point
26:22having made that
26:23dreadful pit
26:24qualifying session
26:25he was running
26:26very very competitive
26:27laps at that point
26:28of the race
26:29so he again
26:30having trouble with
26:31his qualifying
26:32just like Heidfeld
26:33did at the beginning
26:34of the year
26:35and the last two
26:36have been very
26:37quick in the race
26:38after making that
26:39awful mistake of course
26:40on the tyres
26:41which didn't help either
26:42so even though
26:43Kubica was running well
26:44he was not a factor
26:45being a lap down
26:46so Vettel
26:47was racing Lewis
26:48Hamilton for position
26:49at this point
26:50you saw that gap
26:51from
26:52Hamilton's car
26:53to Vettel's
26:54and that would
26:55start coming down
26:56quickly
26:57it would
26:58and of course
26:59we'd already seen
27:00Vettel had been up
27:01to second twice
27:02he'd stopped
27:03after his first stop
27:04he was second
27:05very very competitive
27:06pace coming out
27:07of the Toro Rosso
27:08and Vettel
27:09especially in those
27:10tricky conditions
27:11right
27:12so Hamilton is fourth
27:13Vettel is fifth
27:14Hamilton still in
27:15championship position
27:16but then everybody
27:17started glancing
27:18toward the sky
27:19and looking at the
27:20weather radar
27:21we'll be back in a moment
27:22with more here on
27:23Formula One Debrief
27:27Kubica is a lap down
27:28but he's right in the middle
27:29of that fight
27:30for fifth place
27:31but Kubica is helping
27:32Hamilton
27:33he's got to be
27:34going by
27:35Kubica
27:36and now Hamilton
27:37is past
27:38wow
27:39this is for the
27:40championship
27:41McLaren you've
27:42got to get up
27:43to Toro Rosso
27:45welcome back to
27:46Formula One Debrief
27:47getting into the
27:48climactic final laps
27:49of what was a very
27:50dramatic
27:51Brazilian
27:52Formula One Grand Prix
27:53welcome back
27:54at this point in the race
27:55we assumed pit stops
27:56were over
27:57everybody fueled
27:58to the finish
27:59and the order was
28:00Massa
28:01Alonso
28:02Raikkonen
28:04Lewis Hamilton
28:05in position
28:06to grab his
28:07first world title
28:08but that's when
28:09we first
28:10got word
28:11that rain
28:12was coming
28:14and as it always
28:15seems to
28:16rain changed
28:17everything
28:19seven laps to go
28:22shortly after that
28:23the rain came
28:24it was too much
28:25to risk staying out
28:26on dries
28:27at least the front
28:28runners
28:29and so we saw
28:30everybody start to
28:31dive for the pits
28:32except for Alonso
28:33Raikkonen
28:34yeah so the track
28:35just too greasy
28:36to risk staying out
28:37on those dry
28:38weather tyres
28:39so all the front
28:40runners coming in
28:41to change over
28:42to the
28:43intermediate tyres
28:44you save up some
28:45more downforce
28:46going on to the car
28:47and here comes
28:48Lewis Hamilton
28:51at this point
28:52Massa staying out
28:53and the rain
28:54beginning to fall
28:55heavier and heavier
28:56and after that
28:57cloudburst we had
28:58that delayed the
28:59start of the race
29:00you would think
29:01it's only going to
29:02get heavier again
29:03but at this stage
29:04it did look as if
29:05they were a bit
29:06premature because
29:07it didn't look that
29:08wet quite frankly
29:09but obviously
29:10they've got the radar
29:11so they know exactly
29:12what is coming
29:14one lap later
29:15the Ferrari brain
29:16trust decided
29:17they could not leave
29:18their championship
29:19contender out there
29:20any longer
29:23no the track
29:24just too greasy
29:25we've just seen
29:26Hamilton take on
29:27the intermediate tyres
29:28so Ferrari react
29:29with Massa's car
29:30back to the front wing
29:31to try and get a little bit
29:32more aero efficiency
29:33on the car
29:34intermediate tyres
29:36and sent out
29:37into the pit lane
29:38now the key point here
29:39is remember
29:40the two Toyotas
29:41were out of the points
29:42basically
29:43whatever they're going
29:44to do from here on in
29:45they're not going to
29:46score any points
29:47so these two guys
29:48they roll the dice
29:49Toyota roll the dice
29:50don't bring their cars
29:51in for intermediate tyres
29:52they advance up the field
29:53by virtue of everybody
29:54else coming in
29:55to put groove tyres
29:56onto the car
29:57excuse me
29:58intermediate tyres
29:59wet tyres
30:00so now
30:01the two Toyotas
30:02are in a good
30:03field position
30:04but they're on the
30:05wrong tyres
30:06for the conditions
30:07they're slipping and sliding
30:08all over the place
30:09well they're on the
30:10wrong tyres
30:11for the conditions
30:12when they change
30:13but just at that
30:14particular moment
30:15they were looking
30:16pretty good
30:17because they
30:18because it
30:19well anyway
30:20we'll see what happens
30:21but I mean
30:22just right at the time
30:23they were looking
30:24suddenly they looked
30:25like they were brilliant
30:26it was a gamble
30:27worth taking
30:28they were in the
30:29wrong place
30:30right on the edge
30:31of the precipice
30:32so to speak
30:33in terms of his
30:34world championship
30:35and if you saw
30:36the race broadcast
30:37you know that the
30:38last two laps
30:39were pretty compelling
30:40stuff
30:41so rather than us
30:42telling you about it now
30:43let's go back
30:44and show you how
30:45we called it then
30:46Betel's right on it
30:47Betel's right on it
30:48but sliding
30:49sliding
30:50and Robert Kubica
30:51is that Kubica there
30:52yes it is
30:53I think
30:54in the BMW
30:55Betel's lost air
30:57Betel's lost air
30:58now can BMW
30:59keep the pressure on
31:00Kubica is a lap down
31:01but he's right in the middle
31:02of that fight
31:03for 5th place
31:04but Kubica is helping
31:05Hamilton
31:06it's got to be
31:07now there's Kubica
31:08going by
31:09Kubica
31:10and now Hamilton
31:11is passed by
31:12oh wow
31:13this is for the championship
31:14McLaren
31:15you've got to get
31:16after Toro Rosso
31:17you cannot let that
31:18chassis get away
31:19and look at the
31:20Ferrari garage
31:21wow
31:22now McLaren
31:23has got to get
31:24the rain dance together
31:25it must rain
31:26we've got to get
31:27that car in
31:28McLaren will be thinking
31:29you must rain now
31:30to get that Toyota
31:31out of the picture
31:32we thought this
31:33championship
31:34was going to get
31:35out of the wire
31:36but not this close
31:37to the wire
31:38remember
31:39one lap to go
31:40remember
31:41if they are tied
31:42Massa has the
31:43advantage on the
31:44tie break
31:45because he'll have
31:466 wins
31:47to Hamilton's 5
31:48unbelievable
31:49Massa takes
31:50his terror
31:51visor off
31:52Hamilton has still
31:53got to get after
31:54the Toro Rosso
31:55chassis
31:56and he's losing out
31:57big time
31:58he's losing ground
31:59in the closing
32:00couple of laps
32:01and that Toyota
32:02in 4th
32:03Timo Glock
32:04on the dry weather
32:05tyres
32:06still pounding round
32:07wow
32:08so Vettel's
32:09wet weather
32:10skills
32:11coming to the
32:12fore here
32:13listen to the
32:14crowd
32:15they know
32:16what's going on
32:17and the rain
32:18is growing
32:19heavier
32:20Lewis is
32:22if you want
32:23this championship
32:24you've got to
32:25push now
32:26it's now or
32:27never
32:28don't worry
32:29he is pushing
32:30look at it
32:31the rain
32:32and then it
32:33dries up down
32:34here
32:35traffic in front
32:36they come into
32:37turn 4
32:38oh if they're
32:39still ringing
32:40the church bells
32:41in Maranello
32:42for Ferrari
32:43victories
32:44they've got
32:45their hands
32:46on the rope
32:47right now
32:48but the grip
32:49of the Toro Rosso
32:50they've got
