Context:

Throw out concepts like
'I have become very virtuous' or 'I am a great sinner'.
What is the entity that senses this?
Body-consciousness will not lose its grasp on you with
the thought that your well-being is the result of some spiritual activity.
All you need is to keep observing yourself.
Do not befriend anything that is visible to you.
If you have to act at all, do only this:
Please your consciousness.
"It is very merciful. It will show you all that is directly."
¬ Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj

¬ What is pleasure for consciousness?
¬ What is the body's pleasure?
¬ How are both the pleasures different from each other?
¬ Does the body's joy equal the consciousness's pleasure?
¬ How is it possible for us to enjoy consciousness?

00:00Subranil has quoted Nisargadatta Maharaj and he is saying something remarkable here.
00:13Throughout concepts like I am virtuous or I am a sinner.
00:20What is the entity that senses this?
00:22Body consciousness will not lose its grip on you with the thought that your well-being
00:27is the result of some spiritual activity.
00:30All you need is to keep observing yourself.
00:35Now comes the more remarkable part.
00:39Do not befriend anything that is visible to you.
00:42If you have to act at all, do only this.
00:44Please your consciousness, please your consciousness, please your consciousness.
00:51It is very merciful, it will show you all that is directly.
00:57So Subranil is asking, how is it possible to please the consciousness without getting
01:01pleased in turn?
01:03Moreover, the sense of correlation between spiritual activity like listening to talks
01:08or reading books and the sense of well-being and peace arises automatically.
01:14Why is it told to get rid of that?
01:17Kindly guide.
01:21The pleasures of consciousness, Subranil, are not the pleasures of body.
01:38The body has its pleasures and consciousness has a totally different dimension of pleasure.
01:47That which pleases the body is not that which pleases consciousness.
01:53But the two become one because our consciousness is body consciousness.
02:04Consciousness not entangled with the body seeks a destination of a totally different
02:16nature and as far as the body is concerned, it is seeking pleasures of its own kind.
02:31In some ways, the saint is also a pleasure-seeking individual.
02:42So is a greedy or lustful man.
02:47It's just that the pleasures that the two are seeking are widely separate.
02:57Please the consciousness, not the body and those who are in the business of pleasing
03:03body to them, I say, I exhort and invite, try experiencing the pleasures of consciousness.
03:15You will forget all about the pleasures of body.
03:19If pleasure is what you must have, then in Nisargadatta Maharaj's parlance, have the
03:25pleasures of consciousness.
03:30The pleasures of the body inflate the body, reinforce the body and the pleasures of consciousness
03:39dissolve the consciousness.
03:42Such a great difference.
03:45The more pleasures you give to the body, the more body identified you become.
03:53The more pleasures you give to consciousness, the more all identifications dissolve.
04:04Usually I do not use the term pleasure in context of consciousness, but here because
04:13Maharaj is using that lexicon, so I am following him.
04:28The pleasures of body are called Sukh.
04:37The pleasures of consciousness are called Ananda and the two are very different.
04:58In fact, when you are consciousness itself without its traps and identifications and
05:09when you are trying to please consciousness alone, then that can result in displeasure
05:22to the body and that is alright.
05:28Because the quality of the pleasure of consciousness is far higher than the quality of pleasure
05:34of body.
05:37So the latter can be compromised for the former.
05:52Why does the consciousness need to be pleased?
05:57Because it is lonely.
06:00It usually gets attached to the body.
06:05Now you are saying no, you will not have the body.
06:09So it has become even more lonely.
06:15You need to give it something better than the body.
06:20That is what is called pleasing consciousness.
06:24Give consciousness something better than the body to be with.
06:30This will greatly please consciousness and probably annoy the body.
06:35But that is okay.
06:38It's a good trade-off.
06:39When you are sitting here listening to me, obviously I am not giving you a body massage.
07:09But you are getting pleased, right?
07:16What is getting pleased?
07:18Not the body but the consciousness and the body is getting displeased.
07:23Look at him, 42nd times, so that's what I am saying.
07:34In giving pleasure to consciousness, even if the trade-off is that you will have to
07:38displease the body a little, it is alright.
07:49Azaaz comes to me when I am about to fall asleep, sometimes after I have fallen asleep
07:56and starts massaging.
07:59He starts massaging me, I start sermonizing.
08:02Both of us are pleasing each other.
08:04But who is getting a better deal?
08:10Azaaz.
08:11He is giving me pleasure of the body.
08:12I am giving him pleasure of consciousness and that is the reason he keeps sneaking into
08:16my room.
08:18After all of you have fallen asleep, he will come over, pick up some oil or something and
08:25start doing his thing.
08:29Usually I have fallen asleep by that time and I wake up.
08:31What is it?
08:33And find him at my feet, so I start saying something.
08:40That's a great mistake, you know, to not to know which of these is higher.
09:09It's a cardinal mistake man makes to place the pleasures of body higher than the pleasures
09:18of consciousness.
09:30Just don't make that mistake and everything will be okay.
09:36Acharya ji, does negation of what is not will always bring us to what is?
09:47It will not leave you to go to any point.
09:53You are saying, sir, if I negate what is not, will it bring me to what is?
10:01If that which is not includes you as well, if that which is not is negated, will you still be left?
10:10But that is the common expectation.
10:13After everything has been negated and cut down, I will survive and I will then reach the truth.
10:24Once you are determined to cut down everything that is not, you will have to first of all
10:30slit your own throat, firstly you are not, who will then remain to reach the truth?
10:38Therefore the truth is not a destination.
10:40Forget the truth, look at your own validity, do you exist?
10:47And if you do exist, is it doing any good to yourself?
11:12Ask the ego to do you a great favor.
11:20What?
11:25Leave.
11:34She leaves, you leave.
11:39Nothing remains, peace.
11:44Nothing remains in context of what was existent earlier.
11:51Would there be something after you have gone?
11:58Maybe, maybe not, what is certain is that this question would not be there after you have gone.
12:09The very need to be certain that even after your disappearance, things will carry on,
12:15is a mark of the ego still hanging around.
12:25It is only the ego that wants a certainty about the future.
12:28After I am gone, would there be bliss?
12:33After everything has been negated down, would there be truth?
12:38You are talking about the future.
12:42Who is concerned about the future?
12:44Exactly that entity which you are thinking of hacking down.
12:48If it has been hacked down, who will think about the future?
12:56So don't think about the future, just see whether all this that is around you and within you
13:02needs to exist, whether it is doing you any good by its existence.
13:06It's a simple thing, right?
13:10Just look at what you have and what you are and ask yourself,
13:14is it doing me any good?
13:16Full stop.
13:18Pleasures of body, we have, we know it by five way.
13:33And pleasure of consciousness lies at the feet of master, in presence of master.
13:39And there are any more more more studying scriptures.
13:44Wherever you get it, wherever you get it, what is pleasure of consciousness?
13:50Doubts receding, peace prevailing, complexities getting dissolved.
13:58All that which keeps bugging you, nagging at you, frustrating you from within, subsiding.
14:08That is pleasure of consciousness.
14:11So the pleasure of consciousness lies in not being.
14:17Pleasure of consciousness is a pleasure of disappearance.
14:21Pleasure of consciousness is similar to the pleasures of sleep.
14:29And why do you want to try out five or seven alternate ways of seeking pleasures of consciousness?
14:45You said, I know two ways of getting pleasures of consciousness.
14:50Reading scriptures and listening to the Guru.
14:52Can you tell me five other ways why these two ways you want to abandon?
14:56If you know two ways, is that not sufficient?
15:00Why do you want five other ways?
15:02But man is like this, you know.
15:06Can I have a few more options?
15:08I love him. I love him. I also love him.
15:12Let there be bounteous choice.
15:26If man gets one option, he should be thankful for that.
15:36And that should suffice for entire life.
15:38Why do you want 15?
15:40There are 150 actually.
15:50But you do not need 150.
15:55And if you chase 150, you will not have probably even a single one.
16:02Begin with what you have.
16:09Be grateful for what you already have.
16:11Stick to it.
16:13Maybe that will open the door for many others.
16:17But don't be an expectation of many others.
16:19Stick to what you have.
