Chris Olsen chats with THR on the red carpet and dishes on attending his third MTV Video Music Awards. Plus, he recalls his earliest memory watching the show and shares his advice about not letting hate on the internet get to you.

00:07When someone wins, you get to come out.

00:10I just kind of jump into their arms, and that's always been my goal from day one.

00:15I heard you say that this is your third VMAs.

00:17My third!

00:18What's it like to be back?

00:20It feels strange that I've been here three times now. I don't feel like...

00:25I feel like I've snuck in three times, that's the truth.

00:28There's so much security outside that you can't really sneak in here,

00:31but I feel very honored, I feel very grateful, and excited to watch

00:35all of the incredible performances that are going to be shown tonight.

00:39It's gonna be crazy. This is 40 years of the VMAs, can you believe?

00:44So I wanted to ask, what was one of your earliest memories of either watching

00:47or maybe your first time that you were here?

00:49Lady Gaga bleeding on stage, VMA 2009, she sings paparazzi.

00:53One of the most iconic VMA performances of all time, I will never forget it.

00:56MTV just put it back on YouTube and I've watched it 12 times since that day.

01:03I was gonna ask your most iconic MTV performance that you've seen,

01:06so you would say that one.

01:08I also want to say another new category is best trending video,

01:11so I was wondering if you had a trending song or video for the summer

01:16that you've been loving.

01:17Well, it's very new, but taste Sabrina Carpenter.

01:20I mean, come on.

01:21I know that's kind of end of summer moment, but it's been a Sabrina summer.

01:25Let's be real. And I'm so happy for her.

01:27Are you going to her concert?

01:29Probably. Jesus, I'm sure I'll be at 12 of them or something like that.

01:34Finally, I wanted to ask, I know you had opened up a little bit about

01:38just being vulnerable more on social media and kind of like all the haters out there,

01:42so what advice would you give for other people that are also kind of in the same boat?

01:45How do you just not let it get to you and just kind of keep pushing?

01:49Oh, baby, I let it get to me every time.

01:51My advice to you is cry about it and post your tears.

01:54But also let yourself be vulnerable.

01:56That's really the truth of all of it is I don't think trying to ignore it

02:00or pretending like it doesn't hurt you is ever really effective.

02:03And that's why I decided to be vulnerable and show people

02:06how I was feeling about all of it.

02:08And now I'm at the VMAs, so things are going OK.

02:11Shout out to the haters because they're kind of just fans, right?

02:14Yeah, they're the reason I'm here.

02:16Where am I? Where are you?

02:17But also I am here because so many people continue to love me

02:21and show support, and that's what matters to me.
