00:00Well here we go, our first bout of the night on this Sam Goodman card here in
00:06Wollongong, the south coast of New South Wales. That man on debut, that man aiming
00:11for his first win. I've got to say though Dan, he did have three amateur
00:15fights for three wins, so in boxing he's undefeated.
00:20Here we go, Alessandro, grip up. On the right of screen, John Weitrat now
00:28moving and on left. Weitrat got a lot of height and reach advantage, but at
00:35the moment Gripper looking to just get up on him and get inside.
00:38Getting on the inside, so he's going to be all guns blazing, a wild right there missing.
00:44Weitrat just... Gripper looks in fantastic condition Dan. Unbelievable for a man on
00:51debut. Weitrat says he has no clue about this fighter, there's no vision, there's
00:55no intel, so he's just seeing it all play out. Yeah well you work it out as
01:01you go, you have to. So four round bout here and a wild left there, not quite
01:08connecting for Weitrat, the South Australian. And a big right from Gripper,
01:15evaded. So 32 year old Gripper, 31 year old Weitrat.
01:23Yeah Weitrat needs to do that, use that jab, use that reach. He's got a much
01:28longer reach, he's on the back foot and that's what he needs to do. Oh nice left
01:33hook from Weitrat, good counter. Left as he was backing back there Weitrat, quite
01:40landing, left jab though. Nice good, he's got a lovely jab. Good right the body
01:45from Gripper there. Going for the body Gripper before going upstairs. Sticky
01:51little uppercut from Weitrat, did sneak through. Midway through the first round
01:55here. Gripper, Gripper the aggressive, there's no question and now getting
02:00through. A nice little combination before Weitrat responded. Yeah Gripper very
02:05strong physically, putting that pressure on, walking up, wants to get the fight up
02:09close, he's got the shorter reach. But Weitrat using that jab beautifully and
02:15nice right hands, good clean shots from Weitrat. Now it's Gripper going to work.
02:23So the New South Wales Alessandro Gripper. He wasn't impressed with Weitrat
02:30the Wayne, said he looked plain, looked nothing special. Right getting through
02:37there from Weitrat. Yeah I did see the Wayne, you know if you look at
02:43Gripper, he looks in as I said superb condition. He's lost his mouth guard
02:47here, which is not a real good sign. Back in the old days if you lost your mouth
02:52guard it was bad luck. You just had to keep going. I mean you know there's 25-30
02:58seconds there. Now Barry, that sounds like a man who lost his mouth guard once or
03:03twice. Yeah a couple of times maybe. And I bet when your opponent did, you did not miss an
03:10opportunity. 20 seconds remaining round one. We've got a really good fight here.
03:19What do you make of Gripper's technique here? Man on debut. Well he's, look he's
03:24powerful. He's as I said he's had you know three amateur bouts for three wins.
03:28He's good looking dangerous with the right hand and he's really putting the pressure on
03:32here. But good uppercut there from Weitrat. Weitrat's done a lot of good
03:37stuff. It's a really interesting round. Really close round I reckon. Gripper went to
03:42walk to the wrong corner. That's not a great sign.
03:44Gripper learning the ropes here in his first professional fight and Weitrat is very
03:50quickly on his stool. That's Gripper there who we're looking at here.
04:07When you got him on the ropes, keep going.
04:12Keep going.
04:19Keep throwing him at him.
04:21All good? Yeah.
04:23Keep throwing him at him.
04:25Right, get a lead to the jab.
04:27Get him up with the jab.
04:29Jab right in. The body. The body.
04:31Look to him. It's the body.
04:33Pretty simple instructions there keeping it straightforward.
04:38Round two. Box.
04:40So Weitrat by the way, we haven't seen him since March. He was part of a No Limit card.
04:46Left hook down there from Weitrat was a real good shot. I think it actually hurt Gripper.
04:52Wild left almost got through after he went for the body Weitrat.
04:59Only four rounds this bout.
05:01They're throwing bombs up there.
05:03That's right. They're looking for a quick finish.
05:05Throwing big shots.
05:09Weitrat boxing nicely the majority of the time.
05:11His jab is working well.
05:13Even though Gripper's landing good shots.
05:15We've got a real quality fight here considering it's one on debut and one with two professional fights.
05:21It was Gripper going for the jab there and working it again but all contained by Weitrat.
05:28Good work from Gripper there.
05:34Putting the pressure on.
05:36Two consecutive rights and then he follows it up with a lift.
05:42He's the main aggressor in this fight.
05:44He's good. He is.
05:46Putting the pressure on Weitrat. Backing off at the moment.
05:48He needs to lift his work rate.
05:50Weitrat could be in a bit of trouble here.
05:52He's got nailed right above us in the neutral corner.
05:57Good body work.
05:59He's listening to his corner there Gripper because he really has concentrated on the body in the second round.
06:03The body shots are working for sure.
06:07An uppercut there just missing from Alessandro Gripper.
06:13We've got four very good fights coming up here.
06:15This is fight number one in the prelim section of the program.
06:19The whole card is stacked with great fights.
06:24Those boys standing in the middle of the ring trading shots here.
06:28Gripper doing the majority of the good work here.
06:30He's winning this round well.
06:32Still over a minute left in the second round here.
06:34Just wonder when fatigue is going to start to play its part.
06:36Good work from Weitrat there.
06:38Got that lift through.
06:42Now double right hand from Gripper.
06:44Triple.
06:46Back to being the aggressor.
06:48That little right hand is working really well for him.
06:50That good left hook there from Gripper.
06:53One-two upstairs here from Weitrat.
06:55And then the uppercut.
06:57And another.
06:59Oh, the right there.
07:01Come on, hands free.
07:03Punch out of there.
07:05That was close to being on the butt.
07:09Gripper throwing far more punches.
07:11Keeping the, really putting, lifting the pressure.
07:15Rich was still going to get through the next 20 seconds here.
07:19As Gripper continues to come forward.
07:23Yeah, he's relentless.
07:25Takes a bit of a breather there, Gripper.
07:27Step back, take a deep breath.
07:29You've been working really hard this round.
07:31He's winning this round pretty well.
07:35The closing moments of this second round.
07:37Look at that. Good body work there.
07:39I tell you what, there's only six minutes left here.
07:41It looks like he's got a bit of stamina about him.
07:43The man on debut.
07:45He certainly does.
07:47He fought really well that round.
07:49So John Weitrat there.
07:52A 10-2, let's listen in.
07:56Johnny, while you get your breath back,
07:58will you start making a miss now, okay?
08:00You're going to kill, you're going to drain yourself.
08:02You look good, back on the 1-1-2,
08:04not straight.
08:06Make your miss, move back and jab, touch.
08:08Good one, good one, good one.
08:10Touching the legs.
08:12Remember, remember that, you know?
08:14You used to do a good one, that's another country.
08:16And you go back, you know, to that 1-2,
08:18you don't need to use that.
08:21John Weitrat,
08:23just breathing in the big ones.
08:25Chanel Dargan always puts on a show.
08:27She is coming up very, very shortly here.
08:29She has been wonderful
08:31in the women's division.
08:33Fantastic.
08:35And Liam Talavera is a big boy
08:37who throws big punches,
08:39and he will fight Johan Linde.
08:41A fascinating heavyweight bout
08:43before we move over
08:45to main event.
08:47Certainly is a fascinating heavyweight bout.
08:50So, round three here.
08:52Crossing the midway point.
08:54Gripper putting the pressure on last.
08:56Round two put on a lot of pressure
08:58and threw a lot of good body shots.
09:00John Weitrat needs to lift his game here.
09:02He needs to work harder,
09:04throw more punches.
09:06Stats very even, Barry, but there's no question
09:08Gripper's punches have more to them.
09:10Yes.
09:12Weitrat continues
09:14to get busy, but Gripper's
09:16just walking through. There, he got an uppercut.
09:18You've got to get points
09:20for effective aggression,
09:22which is what he's putting on here.
09:24Look at that. He throws that many right hands.
09:26Gripper.
09:28This is an impressive debut.
09:30It certainly is.
09:32It's a tidy technique, isn't it?
09:34Yes.
09:36He boxes well.
09:38He's got some good stuff,
09:40but his work rate is just not enough.
09:42Really is mixing it up, Gripper.
09:44There you see him go upstairs,
09:47got a really good kit of punches.
09:49Oh, nice right hand.
09:53Gripper getting on top more this round.
09:57It's a hard pace.
09:59Weitrat's not throwing
10:01as many punches as Gripper,
10:03and that's what's costing him here.
10:05When he does throw, he's landing good shots.
10:07Those uppercuts from Gripper continue
10:09to get through.
10:11He's getting hit by three others.
10:13He's landing one and getting hit three back.
10:17There's a nice little uppercut
10:19from Weitrat this time.
10:21Gripper just is relentless.
10:23Come on, hands free.
10:25Punch out.
10:27Still got well over a minute left in this third round.
10:3332 years of age.
10:35You just wonder, where has he been?
10:37They're both in good nick.
10:39Oh, that right hand stun.
10:41That was a beautiful right hand,
10:43but his chin's good, Gripper.
10:46Yeah, Weitrat now taking
10:48some real punishment. Still 50 seconds to go
10:50in this third round.
10:52Is Gripper looking to create a little bit of distance?
10:56He's still throwing them though, Weitrat.
10:58Yeah, and still having success,
11:00but just not doing enough.
11:02Time.
11:04Mouth guard again.
11:10The second time here for Alessandro Gripper,
11:12and this is not to his advantage.
11:15He wants this to keep going.
11:19He's learning as he's going.
11:25He's not wearing boxing shoes,
11:27he's wearing joggers because he's a street fighter
11:29and he wants to feel comfortable.
11:33It's a bit different.
11:35He continues to move forward here.
11:3920 seconds remaining in round three.
11:41Weitrat's jab seems to be his best weapon.
11:44It seems to be the one that gets through most often.
11:46Yeah, he's got a real good jab,
11:48but his work rate is just not
11:50anywhere near as high as Gripper's.
11:54And then the uppercut, just connected nicely.
11:58Weitrat could still turn it around with one shot.
12:00He's got the power,
12:02but I think it's unlikely.
12:04So, three rounds down, one to go.
12:06You have Gripper winning all three.
12:08I think the first round might have been Weitrat's.
12:10It could have gone either way,
12:13He's landed a lot of good jabs in the first,
12:15but since then, the second and the third
12:17definitely Gripper's round.
12:19You ever thought anyone, Barry, that wore joggers?
12:21They're just normal Asics.
12:23Well, I've seen it before.
12:25So, at least they're black.
12:27I mean, it does fit in, but there we go.
12:29No socks either.
12:31What is the difference, Barry,
12:33for the uninitiated between those
12:35which we've all worn and boxing shoes?
12:37Well, boxing boots are higher,
12:39so they give you a bit of ankle support.
12:42And so you've got to wear longer socks
12:44if you've got a bit of ankle support.
12:46But really not a great deal of difference.
12:48If he's got a receipt, he can claim
12:50that as a tax expense.
12:52Last round coming up here.
12:54Weitrat looks pretty aghast to me.
12:56He sure does.
12:58He looks tired.
13:00He did get through four against Truella back in March.
13:02He's got three minutes to survive here
13:04and perhaps come up with a big shot
13:06to turn this around.
13:08Yeah, he's got the power to do it,
13:11but Gripper's putting the pressure on.
13:13He has copped some big shots and worn them well
13:15throughout the first three rounds.
13:17Gripper, I don't think, knows any other way
13:19but to just keep coming forward here.
13:21No, I reckon you're dead right there, Dan.
13:23You're not going to see him sit on a lead,
13:25you would imagine.
13:27Look at that tidy uppercut again.
13:29And the straight, almost, almost.
13:31And then, again, getting through
13:33the defence of Weitrat.
13:35The overhand.
13:37Not as much sting with his punches.
13:39No, he's tired.
13:41He's feeling the pace.
13:43Gripper's work rate has just been,
13:45you know, relentless, to be honest.
13:47He's done a lot of good work.
13:49Hang on, hang on.
13:51We've got again, again, we've got
13:53Mouthguard coming at him.
13:55That's the third time.
13:57Honest to God, they should change the rules
13:59because three times losing your Mouthguard
14:01in one round, you get an extra minute.
14:03If you don't bite down on that sucker
14:05and you lose it again, it's going to be a point taken off.
14:07He better be careful because in a four round bout
14:09that point can make all the difference.
14:11As impressive as he's been.
14:15This might be the first time he's worn a Mouthguard.
14:17Possibly, but I doubt it.
14:21Don't hold in there, come on, head free.
14:23Yes, he's fought some amateurs,
14:25but clearly not comfortable with it.
14:27Hasn't stopped his
14:29boxing ability, though.
14:31No, he's been impressive,
14:33Alexander Gripper.
14:35His work rate's been impressive,
14:37but not good losing a Mouthguard three times.
14:39Come on, head free. Punch out.
14:41Head free.
14:43Can Weitra turn this around? He's going to have to do it
14:45in a real hurry.
14:47Nice of a right hand for Gripper.
14:49Alessandro Gripper
14:51for his professional debut.
14:53I think we might see him on another No Limit card
14:55soon. This is impressive.
14:57He loves that work
14:59up close.
15:01Whereas Weitra
15:03prefers to fight more at a distance.
15:05Got a lovely jab, but he
15:07can't handle this pressure. Weitra's starting
15:09to try big shots here, but they just don't have
15:11the sting. They just don't have
15:13the effervescence.
15:15Gripper is just tireless.
15:17Yes. Relentless.
15:19Look at that. He continues
15:21to throw them. Again, he had Weitra
15:23on the ropes briefly.
15:25He can win one too. There's another lift
15:27getting through from Weitra. Then a big right.
15:29But Gripper just continues
15:31to press. He's got a good chin, Gripper.
15:33Oh, he was hurt with that left hook.
15:35And Gripper stung.
15:37Yes, he was hurt.
15:3935 seconds to go. Can Weitra
15:41somehow turn this around?
15:43Gripper continues to push forward.
15:45He's trying to get a big finish himself.
15:47Comes back with a good left hook himself.
15:49Weitra landed a
15:51beautiful left hook there
15:53about 30 seconds ago. The dead set
15:55shook Alessandro Gripper up.
15:57A little bit of head contact there.
15:5920 seconds remaining. The fourth and final round.
16:01He needs a bomb now, Weitra.
16:07I've got to take a point. He got warned.
16:09I've got to take a point.
16:11That's four times.
16:13Get it in.
16:15If Weitra can win this round,
16:17this becomes really interesting.
16:19One point. Mouthpiece.
16:21Weitra.
16:23For 14 seconds of fury.
16:25The fight comes down to this.
16:27The first fight of the night.
16:29This is an indication of what's coming.
16:31We're in for a rip snorter of an evening.
16:33We certainly are.
16:35Nothing really connecting
16:37here in the closing moments.
16:39And that is that. What a terrific
16:41opening gambit. Excellent.
16:43Alessandro Gripper gave it absolutely
16:45everything on debut and got to the
16:47finish line. And John Weitra
16:49couldn't quite come up with that
16:51big finish.
16:53As impressive as he was in the fourth round.
16:55Yeah, look.
16:57Weitra had his moments right throughout the fight.
16:59But Gripper, for my money,
17:01should be a clear winner, but he's lost
17:03the point. The first round was relatively
17:05close. I still think
17:07Alessandro Gripper will get the
17:09decision, but it's going to be closer than it
17:11probably should have been.
17:13So looking here, Weitra.
17:15There's that left hook.
17:17Look at that. He was really wobbled.
17:19He wore it well because he was straight back
17:21into it. What a good chin he's got.
17:23Flush on the chin.
17:29There it is again.
17:31He was hurt. He sure was.
17:33He took it well.
17:35And if Weitra could have just followed
17:37up and connected, that might have been a real
17:39problem for Gripper.
17:41The biggest issue with Weitra, for my money,
17:43was his work rate and his fitness.
17:45From this, he can learn from this. He needs to be
17:47fitter. He needs his work rate
17:49to be lifted. Alessandro Gripper
17:51in his
17:53Asics joggers and all
17:55might be moments away here from a
17:57win on debut.
17:59But it might be a little tense.
18:01If that first round is called even
18:03and then you take the point off him for the last
18:05round, it could be really
18:07interesting. Weitra could have
18:09just about pinched the first round. He had a real
18:11good first round. He landed a lot of good jabs.
18:13Kept good right
18:15hands. Could have gone either way
18:17the first round, I reckon.
18:21So,
18:23just waiting for the scores to be tallied up.
18:25There's Chanel Dargan. She's coming up shortly.
18:27The champ. I do
18:29believe we can now go
18:31into the ring with
18:33Lieutenant Dan.
18:35Fighters to the
18:37center ring, please.
18:45Ladies and gentlemen,
18:47could we please have a round of applause for these
18:49two warriors. Great first fight
18:51of the night.
18:53After four rounds of action, we go to the
18:55judges scoring cards for a decision. All
18:57three judges scored this competition
18:5938-37. For your
19:01winner by unanimous decision,
19:03fighting out of the blue corner,
19:05Alessandro
19:07Gripper.
19:09Yeah, well it was close.
19:11One point in it and obviously the point taken
19:13off. But the work rate of Alessandro
19:15Gripper got him over the line.
19:17We need to see more of him. Yep.
19:19Because that was all
19:21bluster.
