Rome, Santorini, Barcelona, Amsterdam, across Europe efforts of all different sorts continue
00:07
to roll in, in a quest to curb mass tourism.
00:11
A case of biting the hand that feeds you?
00:13
Or a necessary step to preserve local life?
00:16
Such moves are steeped in controversy.
00:18
With frequent protests among locals, as was the case this summer in Mallorca, municipalities
00:23
are trying to find solutions.
00:26
One of the latest, a proposal to charge two euros at the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
00:30
For the city's top tourism official, the access fee would help manage the crowds, and help
00:35
in store a better code of conduct among visitors.
00:40
The monument already has three entrances.
00:42
So one could imagine an entrance, a normal exit, and an emergency exit.
00:47
Of course we will experiment with this before making it operational.
00:54
The proposal comes after Venice tested out a five-euro fee to visit this spring and summer.
00:59
Greece announced it plans to levy a 20-euro tax on cruise ship visitors during the peak
01:03
summer season.
01:05
The prime minister said over-tourism isn't a problem on the whole in Greece.
01:09
But it is becoming one in popular destinations like Santorini and Mykonos.
01:14
Barcelona is also in storing a tax on cruise ship visitors that stay for less than 12 hours.
01:20
The city's mayor has vowed to end short-term apartment rentals to tourists by 2028.
01:25
The city of Bruges in Belgium also announced its plans to crack down on short-term rentals.
01:31
And it has had a cap of two cruise ships a day since 2019 in the nearby port of Zeebruge.
01:38
Such moves come as the UN's tourism agency says that tourism is surging, and exceeding
01:43
expectations by two percent, with Europe remaining the world's top destination.
