Onto the first of two key mountain stages which will help to determine the outcome of
00:05
this 79th Vuelta.
00:07
Ben O'Connor's been wearing the red jersey since he won Stage 6, but Primoz Roglic would
00:12
love to take it off his shoulders today on the Alto de Montcalvia.
00:16
Defence or attack?
00:19
Defence, I guess.
00:22
Today is really, really important to be honest.
00:27
I think tomorrow is the day that I'm actually looking forward to.
00:30
So, today is the day where I really have to be my best.
00:34
You know, it's only five seconds to Roglic.
00:36
You then have Henrik and Carapaz there.
00:39
So, the battle for the podium is going to be pretty tight.
00:43
This climb suits him well.
00:45
Also, the stage suits him.
00:47
The final.
00:48
Yeah, he won four years ago.
00:51
And probably we will try to repeat today, but it depends how the race goes.
00:57
Confident?
00:58
Yeah.
00:59
Primoz is strong.
01:00
We have a good team.
01:01
So, yeah, very confident.
01:04
The battle promises to be intense and not just for the riders who are eyeing up overall victory.
01:11
We're going step by step.
01:13
We'll take the last few days as they come.
01:15
Today is likely to be an uphill sprint, I would say, and that's the kind of finish I like.
01:20
You have to be up there.
01:22
I think there will also be lots of riders trying to spoil the party by attacking to gain places overall.
01:29
Some climbers have already given up their GC ambitions, but that doesn't mean they can't finish this Vuelta on a high note.
01:37
I would for sure prefer a stage win over a top ten.
01:40
I mean, yeah, I've won the race.
01:43
I've also finished in the top ten before.
01:46
So, yeah, trying to win a stage would give me more satisfaction.
01:50
But, yeah, it's also nothing to shake your head at, being in the top ten of a Grand Tour.
01:59
Stage 19 is all about the final climb up the Alto de Mon Calvillo, where Roglic won ahead of Carapaz in 2020.
02:06
It's 8.6k at an average gradient of 8.9%, which is certainly steep enough for gaps of five seconds or more.
02:13
So, will O'Connor still be in red by the end of the day?
02:21
Five minutes and six seconds, five seconds for the riders who are in the breakaway.
02:28
After several attempts, a group of five men went up the road and opened up that five-minute gap.
02:33
There were two from Anto Marche Wanti, Vito Brat and Simone Petilli,
02:37
along with Fran Mihaljevic of Bahrain Victorious, Edouard Plancart from Alpecin Deceuninck
02:43
and Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates, a team who've been on the attack pretty much every day since the end of the first week.
02:50
One of del Toro's teammates, Jay Vine, needed some treatment after crashing early in the stage.
02:55
The Australian also hit the deck on stage 13, but he's gritting his teeth after two consecutive DNFs at La Vuelta.
03:04
The peloton was being led by Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe,
03:07
who were making no secret of the fact that they wanted to set this up for Roglic,
03:11
the Slovenian targeting another win on Mon Calvillo.
03:14
The average speed remained high, over 44km an hour,
03:18
as they approached the first climb of the day, the Puerto de Bordilla,
03:21
a fairly straightforward affair of 5.2km at 4.8%.
03:25
At this point, the gap to the break was around three minutes.
03:29
Clearly, this wasn't going to be their day.
03:34
There we are. We commence the Puerto de Bordilla, this third categorised climb.
03:39
It's a nice, steady climb.
03:43
Mihaljevic leading the way over the summit, with the peloton still at just under three minutes.
03:49
Red Bull and Movistar then decided to up the tempo on the descent,
03:53
causing splits and a bit of panic in the peloton.
03:56
Matias Skjelmoza was the biggest name caught on the wrong side of it,
03:59
but his Lidl Trek team went to work and brought things back together.
04:03
The gap was now down to under two minutes.
04:13
Five then became four at the front, with Brat dropping back.
04:16
The bunch had the breakaway in their sights, though,
04:19
as they entered the final 15km with the final climb soon looming into view.
04:24
The base of the climb is here. We're heading for the Altadere, Man Calvillo.
04:29
The breakaway were quickly swallowed up as Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe continued to set a furious pace,
04:35
and the rest of the GC group couldn't live with it.
04:39
There is the split. The split is gone, and it's leaving Richard Carapaz to have to close the gap.
04:45
The Red Bull rocket of Martinez and Vlasov launching Roglic into orbit,
04:50
the Slovenian going solo at the front with 5km remaining.
04:53
Further back, it was turning into a scrap for the podium.
04:57
And there goes the attack again from Enric Mas.
04:59
Enric Mas goes. The rider who stood overall,
05:03
he's trying to break Ben O'Connor, and he's trying to get rid of Richard Carapaz too.
05:09
Mas pulling around 20 seconds clear of Carapaz, O'Connor and Godoux,
05:13
but it didn't look like he had the legs to catch Roglic.
05:16
The Slovenian soaring away as the man in red began to suffer.
05:23
The elastic is snapped, and Ben O'Connor could be saying goodbye.
05:29
Well, he would certainly be saying goodbye to that red jersey
05:32
as a dominant Roglic reached the summit.
05:38
And right now, Primoz Roglic is going to win the stage.
05:42
And right now, Primoz Roglic is going to win the stage.
05:45
Stage 19 up to the Alto de Mon Calvillo,
05:48
and he's going to ride his way into the red jersey, into La Roja.
06:04
Red Bull spent the whole day teeing it up, and Roglic finished the job in style,
06:07
making it back-to-back wins on Mon Calvillo.
06:10
His third win of this Vuelta and the 15th in total,
06:13
the 34-year-old taking a huge stride towards landing his fourth overall crown.
06:19
I'm happy. I'm happy with the way I'm functioning,
06:24
and definitely happy with the guys.
06:27
Like I said, had some really nice memories from this climb,
06:31
and yeah, didn't disappoint me again. Beautiful.
06:36
Roglic was 46 seconds ahead of Godo and Schjelmoser in the end,
06:40
with Mass, Landa and Rodriguez all within a minute, O'Connor at 1 minute 49.
06:46
With just two stages to go, Roglic recovers the red jersey
06:49
that he lost to O'Connor back on stage 6.
06:52
He now leads by 1.54, with Mass at 2.20.
06:58
No action in the points classification today.
07:01
As long as Caden Groves makes it safely to Madrid,
07:04
he'll go home in green.
07:07
UAE are in pole position to win the mountains classification
07:10
with Saler or Wijn, but there are lots of points available tomorrow,
07:13
so keep an eye on Castrillo.
07:17
Schjelmoser has taken white for the first time at this Vuelta.
07:20
He now leads Rodriguez by just 8 seconds.
07:23
Tomorrow there are seven climbs, including a summit finish on Picon Blanco.
07:27
Don't miss it. Join us again on Saturday.
07:30
And thanks for watching.
