Lee Carsley: meet England's interim boss

Carsley led the Under-21s to Euro 2023 glory and has picked some old favourites for his first senior squad.

00:00I think the expectation now around the squad and the players is really exciting, so I understand

00:05that I'm in a really privileged position, one that I'm really looking forward to, I'm

00:08excited about it.

00:09I'm really, really confident in the job that I can do. I think we're all aware that the

00:18next candidate that comes in, the objectives are quite simple, it's to win a major tournament,

00:23so that'll be the case in the future I'm sure.

00:26He's a great manager tactically, man management is great and I was buzzing when I found out

00:32that he got the job because I felt like he really deserved it and I feel like it suits

00:36him perfectly.

00:37He's a very fair coach, he's very honest, he's direct in his approach. I think it helps

00:42as a player when a coach takes interest in a player, not just on the pitch but off the

00:48pitch also.

00:56We talk about the pathway a lot, we talk about potentially getting to the last stage

01:08of the tournament. This group of players have shown that they can win and they can win in

01:13a different way at times.

01:14In the first couple of games we played some incredible football, but the later part of

01:20the tournament when we come against the real top teams, they're always going to have the

01:23ball and we had the ability to sit back, stay together and defend and ultimately that's

01:28what won us the trophy.

01:30It's great that we want to be seen as an attacking team, but from the Summers' point of view

01:35we went through the whole tournament and didn't concede a goal, which was testament to the

01:38defenders as well and the way that they defended their own box. Playing to the players' strengths

01:43would be a big part of the philosophy.

01:53I thought it was important that we put some fresh faces in and put our own little mark

02:02on the squad.

02:03Winning the World Cup and the Euros at a youth level, I've definitely gained that winning

02:09mentality, winning experience. I think you have to look at it as a new start to want

02:14to go forward and try and achieve something.

02:17This last tournament, the Euros, was very special for us because in our case it was

02:22the last time we'd play with each other unless we'd get called up to the seniors.

02:27Because he's got the right people behind him and he's working on things that can be improved.
