On Tuesday, federal prosecutors filed several criminal charges alleging that former New York state government aide Linda Sun was secretly a Chinese agent. Veuer’s Matt Hoffman has the story.

00:00The FBI says a former aide in New York state government was a secret Chinese agent.
00:05On Tuesday, federal prosecutors filed several criminal charges against Linda's son,
00:10including failure to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
00:13Son's husband, Chris Hu, was also charged with bank fraud conspiracy and other crimes.
00:18According to the New York Times, Son was in New York government for 14 years.
00:22She worked in the Andrew Cuomo administration and was current Governor Kathy Hochul's
00:26deputy chief of staff from September of 2021 to March of 2023.
00:31China allegedly arranged millions of dollars in transactions with Son's
00:34husband in exchange for services rendered by Son.
00:37The Times says these services included blocking meetings with representatives of Taiwan and
00:42stopping New York officials from speaking out on Chinese persecution of the Uyghur minority.
00:46Son and Hu have pleaded not guilty.
00:48Governor Hochul addressed the charges on WNYC's All Things Considered Tuesday.
00:53I'm furious and I'm outraged and absolutely shocked at how brazen her behavior was.
00:58It was a betrayal of trust.
01:00The second we discovered some levels of misconduct, we fired her.
01:05We alerted the authorities and hence we ended up with what happened here today.
01:10According to the Times, Chinese embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu claimed ignorance of this specific
01:15case but said, in recent years, the U.S. government and media have frequently hyped
01:19up the so-called Chinese agents' narratives, many of which have later been proven untrue.
