00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely this
00:06afternoon to speak to Kate Young of the Kate Young String Quartet. Now you're heading to
00:10Worthings Pavilion Theatre on September the 24th with a new album. Now, what's the name
00:17of the album and what's the concept behind it? What are you doing on this album?
00:22The album is called Umbiliferai and it's a concept album inspired by the world of plants
00:30and their medicinal uses. Umbiliferai is the name of the genus of plants which have aerial
00:38parts and they spread their seeds through the wind, so that was a sort of initial concept
00:43that I saw with this music.
00:45And when does the album come out?
00:48It comes out on the 27th of September. Worthing is the first day on our album tour and we
01:02will have our album launch on the 28th in Edinburgh and the band is an international
01:09string quintet, folk and world inspired players, but it's also a bit of a mix of chamber and
01:18indie styles as well. So we've got performers from Slovenia, France and Austria and Scotland
01:27coming together. And we're really excited that, yeah, it's going to be our first day on the
01:32tour, so it'll be an exciting launch.
01:36Fantastic. And the interest in plants and herbalism goes right back to the founding of the
01:40quintet, doesn't it?
01:43Say that again?
01:44The interest in plants and herbalism goes right back to the start of this journey, doesn't it?
01:50Yes, yes. The music was created as a result of a commission in Celtic Connections in
01:59Glasgow, which is a winter festival, back in 2016.
02:04So I composed the music for this set up, well actually for a larger band, for an eight
02:12piece. And we sometimes play, as we will do, as a string quintet.
02:19So, yeah, it was, I pretty much composed it for them.
02:23Fantastic. Well, Kate, lovely to speak to you and I hope you have a very happy trip to
02:28Worthing and album launch three days later.
02:31Thank you, we're really looking forward.
