00:00:00Iron influence on American teams the wizardry of Japan well today
00:00:04It's the virtually unknown style of the Italians to background this nation and host country, New Zealand
00:00:09My pleasure to introduce you to two commentators who you'll be hearing a lot of Keith Quinn and Graham Thorne
00:00:20So the all-black team of
00:00:231987 for this opening World Cup match an historic moment being led onto the field by their captain David Kirk
00:00:29And coming up behind them the visitors for their first ever international in New Zealand being led out by Marzio
00:00:35Innocenti the Italian team and certainly they look pretty nervous
00:00:54At the moment, it's a pretty afternoon in Auckland
00:00:57But we've had so many showers today some of them torrential that anything could happen weather-wise in the next 80 minutes
00:01:03There are the all-blacks
00:01:05waiting to be
00:01:07Introduced and there is the young man who was the captain of the New Zealand team a year ago
00:01:12But who had the captaincy taken off him and now gets it back again
00:01:15Just nine months after losing it here on this ground and he's now meeting officials looking pretty
00:01:20Happy as he's now going to introduce his team members Sean Fitzpatrick Warwick Taylor Craig Green a very heavy Auckland influence in this
00:01:27New Zealand team today man with a headband. There is Wayne Shelford from North Harbour Joe Stanley
00:01:33Grant Fox
00:01:35Being introduced to Sir David Beatty the patron of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union a quick glimpse
00:01:40There are Michael Jones the only new player in the team today
00:01:42There's Steve McDowell Murray Pearce the very tall Wellington placement there
00:01:46So David Beatty himself a very fine rugby player in his young day
00:01:49Gary wet with his twin brother and John Gallagher the Wellington fullback playing his first game John Kerwin on the end of the line for
00:01:56The New Zealand team so David Beatty accompanied by Mr. Ritchie Guy the manager of the New Zealand team
00:02:03Today's match official that's a Jim Fleming
00:02:06the touch judge
00:02:08from
00:02:09Scotland Bob Ford and the referee from Australia and Kerry Fitzgerald who be the touch judge John Kendall Carpenter who has just declared the games
00:02:16Is the other man there?
00:02:19Now Sir David meeting Marzio in a Chetti the Italian captain. That's the new fly half there
00:02:26Ambrosia then the captain yellow. There's Oscar Colada the little man the big tall man is Franko Burnie. There's the winner Marcello Petito
00:02:35Massimo Masciarelli the fullback there with the balling head is Ghezzoni
00:02:38Then into the boards and that's big Franco Burnie the biggest man in the tournament now
00:02:43we come into the front row and these tough men Tito Lupini there and the halfback Julio Lorigiola and
00:02:51The hooker Giorgio Morali the Italians looking pretty businesslike, that's the number eight for Giuseppe Artuso
00:02:58Marcello in a Chetti speaks excellent English as we know
00:03:03I'll look at the Italian lineup and you'll see that it's 15 players today have earned collectively over 300 international caps starting with the fullback
00:03:11Serafina good Sony who today is playing his 60th game
00:03:14The Italian back line is fast and sharp
00:03:16Especially the left winger Marcello Petito and the outside center Oscar Colada at halfback is Fulvio Lorigiola
00:03:22And he combines with the three club mates in the loose forwards and one of the locks Franco
00:03:26Burnie is a one hundred and twenty five kilogram giant possibly the biggest man in the World Cup
00:03:37In the New Zealand team David Kirk
00:03:39Who'll be number nine returns to the captaincy that he lost on this ground nine months ago against Australia
00:03:44There are three new test players pullback John Gallagher number 15 the flanker Michael Jones number seven and the prop forward Richard Lowe number one
00:03:51Once again, the three sets of twins
00:03:53There's a set of twins in the team Gary and Ellen Whetton
00:03:57and in fact
00:03:57there are nine organs in the team beating the previous record for one province by two and
00:04:03This is an historic memento a coin used to toss for the match between New Zealand and England in
00:04:101925 will be used for the toss for this historic rugby a case today
00:04:15The referee with the coin is Bob Fordham David Kirk will make the call in a chente will make his pick
00:04:26You want to defend this and it'll be New Zealand. Thanks. Good luck boys. Okay, that's it. They're free Bob Fordham
00:04:32That's
00:04:37That's in a shanty the 29 year old doctor from Petraka a very proud moment for this man today
00:04:42Who's been the captain of the Petraka champion team for the last three years?
00:05:02So
00:05:11There are the Italian team and Graham Thorne pretty good conditions, but being Italians of Latin temperament, they might just be a bit
00:05:18temperamental, but here are the national anthem
00:05:32Oh
00:05:54So a look inside the Italian and now the all-black team
00:06:02Oh
00:06:32Oh
00:06:34Oh
00:06:58So there it is all the hoopla of
00:07:01International sport comes to New Zealand for rugby and there's the Italian team who are taking the wind and the Sun for the first 40
00:07:09Minutes of this World Cup
00:07:10Have a look at the teams
00:07:12There's an eccentric in number two in the foreground as Guido Rossi the hooker and the all-blacks are doing their haka
00:07:31Oh
00:07:50So David Kirk the 25 year old coming back to be the New Zealand team's captain today
00:07:56Really the number three choice after the retirement of jock Hobbs
00:08:01And the injury to Andy Dalton
00:08:05So we've met the two captains
00:08:12The Italian team away to the left
00:08:18This is the only new player in the New Zealand team today a real local boy Michael Jones from out the west of Auckland
00:08:23Pulling on the all-black jersey for the very first time
00:08:26So
00:08:30There's the referee Bob Fordham game will start exactly three o'clock
00:08:34Let's really hope this can be a celebration of what William Webb Ellis started so long ago
00:08:39Let's hope the series will be worthy of the trophy that bears the name the William Webb Ellis Cup
00:08:49Referee Bob Fordham of Australia signals and Grant Fox begins the first ever Rugby World Cup match
00:08:56And the man with the ball is number 12 Warwick Taylor from the kickoff
00:09:00Ground conditions a little slippery out to Rodolfo Ambrosio the new fly half for Italy
00:09:13But he couldn't come to New Zealand and this man Rodolfo Ambrosio born in Argentina is the new man in the number 10 shirt
00:09:21So the Italians will be looking for big things from Ambrosio today
00:09:26So now the first line out in the match inside the New Zealand 22 number two for New Zealand's Auckland Sean Fitzpatrick
00:09:35The big jumpers for Italy Franco Bernie number four and Mauro Gardein number five
00:09:43There's referee Bob Fordham and let's look now along the faces you can see that's Kirk again
00:09:49The big man in the middle of the Italian line is the huge man Franco Bernie
00:09:54That's Richard Lowe there
00:10:04That's where they could have advantage
00:10:08Former international Graham Ford with me in the commentary box
00:10:12Conditions are actually
00:10:14Suited so well to New Zealand
00:10:16It's a bit slippery on top and they've got three of the fastest men in the world rugby the numbers six seven and eight
00:10:22Shelford Jones and Whitney, they've got to have control though in these conditions
00:10:29So David Kirk Shelford is number eight driving off the back this may be where the All Blacks try the Italians out in the first few moments
00:10:42First penalty of the match goes to New Zealand just about their 22 meter line
00:10:48They're having a look at some of these Italian for you number one is Guido Rossi next to him number three the man walking away
00:10:53To the left. That's a Tito Lupini Emilio Lupini. Actually, he's the
00:10:57Transvaal former Transvaal international and Grant Fox clears Lupini actually a South African born
00:11:04But of course from Italian stop and there he is number three number five is Mauro Gardein
00:11:12And so it's Morelli at the front number two to throw
00:11:19I
00:11:21Tell you it's might have problem getting ball. That's Kirk. That's Michael Jones to see the explosive speed off the mark
00:11:27Okay, I'll add a ground box the open teammates
00:11:30Great green lifted behind and his first touch of the ball. I
00:11:35Think the All Blacks have to run at the Italians and there's Craig Green who was just relishes Eden Park. He loves the ground
00:11:42Coming in from the left will be the halfback Fulvio Lurigiola
00:11:50He's also from the Petrarca club the champion club of Italy for the last four years
00:11:54There are four others from that club in that pack. You see there
00:12:00Hooker Morelli is up Lurigiola now. He likes to kick high to test the wingers
00:12:05That's a Petrarca tactic and you see they put the pressure straight on
00:12:09Craig Green
00:12:12Players were in advance of the kick though, and in fact, we come to halfway
00:12:17But look for Fulvio Lurigiola the halfback because he's very good at the high kick to the wingers into the box as we say in
00:12:24Rugby parlance or the one just behind the opposition backs. That's Lurigiola
00:12:29He's 28 year old. He's an immensely experienced player with 32 international
00:12:42Once again, we're having trouble with the scrubs and with all the International Rugby Board people here watching this World Cup
00:12:48We might finally get something done about it. Okay, go in a box. That's going to be a ball that
00:12:54Cipri no concerning coming in. He made the catch
00:12:57Boy got barreled by Jones gonna take it down. This is Masoletti
00:13:02Masoletti
00:13:11Another example of the very experienced players in the Italian team. Here's a man playing is 47th international today a former Italian captain
00:13:20There was a good kick from Grant Fox it held up in the wind but good Sony was equal to the task
00:13:26Well, that one was taken without any competition at all, there's another test for the
00:13:32Pullback, it's only another good kick Taylor underneath
00:13:37Midfield outside the Italian 22 Lord Giola, that's Oscar Colotto
00:13:44And what a stylish looking player he is very fast
00:13:50Number 13 Oscar Colotto
00:13:52Number 13 Oscar Colotto. He's a man who played with John Kerwin in the Treviso Club when Kerwin spent some time in Italy
00:14:10That's Maureen Godine sorry
00:14:13In a chinty of the back. He's done the man there. You see number seven for the Italians is
00:14:19Marzio in a chinty the captain now, he's the man that said if God wanted to make a rugby player
00:14:25he would make him just like jock hops and
00:14:28What a tribute from the man who really has expressed the utmost admiration for the former all-black captain
00:14:35Ten meter line just to the right for Laura Giola
00:14:39Oh
00:14:46Six minutes gone no score
00:14:54So
00:14:57Tuzo to Laura Giola
00:15:05Basically it was a way to tick by Laurie Giola because he kicked it into touch instead of kicking it straighter down the field
00:15:11But they've got the all-blacks a bit rattle key
00:15:21Murray Pierce getting the ball
00:15:23Didn't look straight to me and that's the way a referee Bob Fordham from Australia sees it
00:15:28You see the referees uniform there all the referees in the Rugby World Cup matches will be wearing that distinctive
00:15:33Jersey that the referee further Fordham is wearing today blue with the red hoop and the whites around the edges
00:15:42Laurie Giola Ambrosia, this is Colotto
00:15:46Oh Craig Green will take it behind his line
00:15:56Well, the Colley wobbles belong to the all-blacks at the moment
00:15:59Which additionally Keith the all-black side did not play well in the first test of a series
00:16:04And I suppose you could say this is the first test of a sort of series
00:16:08The only thing in their favor is it's being played at Eaton Park
00:16:10Which has been a tremendous ground for the all-blacks over the years except for last year, of course
00:16:17What sticks two locks going in but again deflected down to the New Zealand team, that's Taylor like kicking the ball away
00:16:25Well, Warwick Taylor playing his 17th international today
00:16:28Which makes him the most kept second five eights in New Zealand rugby history of our Taylor from Canterbury
00:16:39Giorgio Morelli throws jumping at number six in the lineouts
00:16:44Johnny Farina, Laurie Giola
00:16:49Galahad back for his first touch and again, not quite a clean catch but touchdown anyway, John Galahad
00:16:59I think it might be worth the all-black just taking a big
00:17:01Drop kick up the field and trying to take some of the pressure off because they've really got the jitters
00:17:07so
00:17:18Didn't go over the 22 and that's another kick not a scrub
00:17:27Marvelous rugby occasion my word the atmosphere is really buzzing here up to 25,000 people in Eaton Park
00:17:34Gary Whetton is number five for New Zealand
00:17:40Laurie Giola who really looks a dangerous man Ambrosio, Colodo,
00:17:43Gaitaniela, the fullback Gazzone is up, the left winger is Marcello Petita
00:17:48and Galahad gets him
00:17:50That was good defence work from the all-black because they came up in a line and left the winger to the fullback
00:18:00That's the left wing the little man Marcello Petita
00:18:05Ten meter mark New Zealand territory Fitzpatrick
00:18:13Well, he rather pitched that one down the Italian side Fox letting it go this time Taylor
00:18:20Thrown down by Gardein halfway
00:18:34And no score ten minutes gone in rugby's first ever World Cup match
00:18:45Pulvio Lorigiola
00:18:47Remember the three loose forwards and Lorigiola are all from the same club the champion club of Italy these last four years
00:18:54So there are many combinations you could expect from Lorigiola and his loose men Atuzo, Unacenti and Farina
00:19:01It's gone on the New Zealand side, Kerwin
00:19:03Tackled by Petita
00:19:05That's Alan Whitten
00:19:07Balls there, Kirk
00:19:09Whistles by a lost forward
00:19:11Now that was a shot
00:19:13That's Alan Whitten
00:19:15Balls there, Kirk
00:19:17Whistles by a lost forward
00:19:19Now that was a shot
00:19:22Whistles by a lost forward
00:19:24Now that was a shot
00:19:26That's that man again
00:19:28John Kerwin
00:19:32He's been having a brilliant year this year at Eden Park
00:19:34And he gets the ball
00:19:36You can hear the crowd roar
00:19:38Kerwin!
00:19:49Katsone making the clearance
00:19:51Oh, he hasn't found it
00:19:53Kerwin again getting up speed
00:19:57Jones
00:19:58Oh, the way ahead is clear for Jones
00:20:04Just over anxious for the All Blacks
00:20:06against him they just can't capitalize on them. Michael Jones could have actually sprinted into
00:20:11the corner then grandpa what do you think the way ahead was it looked pretty clear.
00:20:15If this was his fourth or fifth test I think he would have done it Keith. Basketball experience
00:20:19coming into play there the way he hooked the ball back inside but there he is a magnificent young
00:20:23man Michael Jones no doubt about it the Italians now in defense now let's see how their latin
00:20:28temperament stands up here under the kind of pressure that the All Blacks have put on the
00:20:32last few months a little tussle going on there between Lorigiola and Kirk you see over the back
00:20:36trying to dominate the uh position right in this drum channel I would think
00:20:43big scrum from New Zealand but they're going to get it to the Italians this is
00:20:51already the Italian scrum starting to break up they don't want to really go down I don't think
00:20:56that's why we're having so much trouble in the front row and Gazzone there was at all thought
00:20:59to bother I thought he was going to get out of it but he didn't so here's the five meter scrum
00:21:05with the big blind 12 minutes gone New Zealand looking for some control driving on
00:21:14by the loose man Kirk shoveled away towards Kirwin Kirk again that's Lorigiola looking
00:21:23after his opposite number well the Italians said that if they could weather the early pressure by
00:21:30New Zealand they would compete in this game they started out very well but this is pressure time
00:21:35for the Italian 15. Giorgio Morali throwing wetness number five
00:21:43Fitzpatrick that's very close to the corner flag there you see in the background
00:21:46so this scrum could go down right on the goal line because it was held up of course this is
00:22:04test running we're playing so there are scrums closer than five minutes so don't forget the
00:22:08moment the ball goes over the goal line it's open slather anyone can fall in it the scrum finishes
00:22:1730 minutes gone the weight is going in
00:22:21that's innocenti and referees awarded a penalty try the referee has awarded a penalty try so a
00:22:27sensational opening score in the rugby world cup series without doubt
00:22:36he was penalized by innocenti actually that was penalized
00:22:40and so in the replay it looks like an obstruction
00:22:45by the Italians innocenti the captain and that has cost them the opening try
00:22:56let's see if we can see anything from the next angle there it is again David Kirk
00:23:02no I don't think so I think that it was actually an offside a deliberate offside to stop the ball
00:23:08coming out in that case we would perhaps put the blame on the Italian captain innocenti
00:23:19there was a deliberate offside to stop the ball coming out
00:23:23perhaps put the blame on the Italian captain innocenti
00:23:31there he there he is there so the world cup gets off to an explosive start and a penalty
00:23:37try being awarded by the referee Mr Fordham from Australia against Italy
00:23:44so the kick went over from underneath the post that's where the penalty try is awarded and David
00:23:49Kirk has let that ball go that's a bad mistake and uh I guess he'll be grinding his teeth a little
00:23:56New Zealand captain something in the song communication breakdown completely there
00:24:02yours mine nobody's and look at that right on the fence New Zealand ball though
00:24:06New Zealand leading by six to nil Sean Fitzpatrick to throw the quarter flag is right there
00:24:10maybe Italians are not competing very well at line out time number four is
00:24:22Gardein sorry number four is Franco Burnie actually have a look at this guy number four he is a huge
00:24:26man he's 125 kilograms and that's that's him in the left of the second row that's about 19 stone six
00:24:34so defensive strong for New Zealand
00:24:46so that Italian cord pack is uh being stretched to the limit there in line outs and scrums
00:24:58and New Zealand getting out of the danger area by just picking up the ball from number eight
00:25:07and forcing the Italians back and of course getting the put in
00:25:11every time now they've got a bit of room behind that scrum
00:25:15in front of the goal line so Kirk can probably kick for touch
00:25:19now
00:25:24there's the Italians putting in a scrum here
00:25:28Wayne Shelford off the back Alan Whetton in support
00:25:33and the Italians went over the top
00:25:49so 17 minutes gone in the game and certainly New Zealand and Italy have played an exciting
00:25:58and pulsating first quarter but the dominance by the All Blacks is becoming a bit evident
00:26:08certainly in those early moments the Italian backs look very sharp
00:26:12the line out dominance is showing in the line out count
00:26:16seven to one to the All Blacks to throw again is Giorgio Morelli
00:26:24now they're trying it down the back they've got one again
00:26:27that's the flanker Karina oh that was just so awkward there in the backs for Ambrosio
00:26:36it's knocked on the line out by New Zealand so I think Italy should try and run it at
00:26:42the All Blacks they shouldn't kick it at them they should try and run it wide
00:26:45with their little nippy centers okay let's see if they can work it in their backs this time the
00:26:50Italian team after 80 minutes of play Lorigiola Ambrosio he's trying the angle kick for the corner
00:26:58Gallagher well he didn't judge his angles right
00:27:07this is John Gallagher All Black a new test player from the Oriental Rongotai
00:27:10Club in Wellington they haven't had a test player since Clive Currie played
00:27:15in the number 15 jersey back in 1978
00:27:26having his first game for the All Blacks in New Zealand Grant Fox
00:27:31it's a good catch by Gardine Ambrosio kicking again
00:27:40Craig Green
00:27:53so the Canterbury winger Craig Green
00:27:57has only been in the winning All Black team eight times out of his 14
00:28:00internationals have been trying to improve their percentage in the World Cup
00:28:03and if John Gallagher continues on from what he was like in Whangarei a couple of weeks ago
00:28:28this could be a really good match as long as the rain stays off and the ball doesn't get slippery
00:28:33after the New Zealand backs again Stanley getting up towards halfway Ambrosio got pushed off Jones
00:28:40Alan Whitten
00:28:47good work by Gary Whitten the ball is there for New Zealand
00:28:52Kirk
00:28:55and a penalty to New Zealand they were over keen to get at David Kirk and a midfield penalty
00:29:04to New Zealand only about 20 meters out
00:29:11you can see that the dramatic play by the loose forwards for New Zealand
00:29:19that they just run at the Italians this is what they've got to do
00:29:23Joe Stanley and Michael Jones and Alan Whitten just running at the Italians
00:29:29and then the ball just went away from Steve McDowell and that was the end of the movement
00:29:47so
00:29:56Fox is only about 20 minutes out he's gone right back to his full extent of his run
00:30:0521 minutes gone
00:30:17so nine points to nil now the All Blacks lead and I guess Graham Thorne the Italians will be
00:30:26looking to their discipline they've cost them nine points there with the penalty try and then
00:30:30the penalty yes Keith they've got to watch this but I still think they've got to play the game
00:30:37to the All Blacks they can't take them on up front they're not going to win the scrums
00:30:42they're not winning the lineouts so they've all the ball they get they've got to use 100 percent
00:30:47of it but the All Black team in the last five minutes has changed from that first 10 minutes
00:30:57okay Ambrosio kicks out and kicks out a deep one oh that's the right idea to push the All Blacks
00:31:04back behind their 22 meter line this is Rodolfo Ambrosio hits his first match for Italy today
00:31:10as I said before replacing the legend of Italian rugby Stefano Bettarello a 24 year old
00:31:20and this is about the fourth dropout from the 22 from the New Zealand team
00:31:29see the jump the two number fives went to wet
00:31:32box
00:31:35now this is Serafina Goodsoni the veteran fullback who's been in the team for 11 years
00:31:41good tackle by John Kerwin Kerwin actually cleared it to Kerr oh could be an overlap here
00:31:47if it bounces right Shelford Gallagher Craig Green beats Ambrosio Ambrosio doesn't look
00:31:55too keen on the tackle number 10 look at the way the black shirts are flying in
00:32:02so just a couple of questions being asked about some of the defense of these
00:32:12little nimble Italian backs as the All Blacks run hard at them
00:32:20New Zealand looking into the strong sun in the first 40 minutes
00:32:24come on
00:32:31Shelford is number eight number six jumping over the top now the Italians have this one
00:32:37that will be a penalty against Sean Fitzpatrick
00:32:53so there's Ambrosio a way to touch
00:33:02uh
00:33:19and so Mauro Gardine
00:33:23his 20th international tap ball but Kirk lovely ball really Taylor Kerwin
00:33:30you see that repeated battering by the All Blacks might call the question that Italian defense
00:33:36the Italians are looking like this one but they can't clear it
00:33:40then again the All Blacks lost the ball then the ball went out of John Kerwin's
00:33:44arms into the Italian side of the uh wall okay midfield position Graham you still say they've
00:33:49got to run it a bit of tricks from the backs yes they're doing a split in the backs now the Italians
00:34:00foreign
00:34:05they've got a big line to the left you can see that the fly half Ambrosio standing a bit to the
00:34:10left there
00:34:30there's Gazzani coming from the fullback
00:34:37Kerwin
00:34:41good tackle by Gaitaniello and slippery ball there Kerwin again another good tackle this time by
00:34:48Gaitaniello again
00:34:49again
00:35:04and when that kick was charged down by the Italians as yet
00:35:11Italy have only won two lineouts
00:35:14but they are up 6-5 in the scrum which is an indication that New Zealand are actually doing
00:35:20all the work full viola regiola 10 meter mark that's the high when he likes to put the pressure
00:35:26on Kerwin see Gaitaniello didn't have quite the power to put Kerwin over but nevertheless that's
00:35:33the strength of Lauriciola's play and the Italians appealing against the referee's decision there
00:35:44the fox off the left boot hasn't found the touch and they're not retiring 10 meters
00:35:49the Italians are they're looking a wee bit ragged in the last few moments
00:35:55and Mr Fordham the referee has not awarded a mark yet both wingers have marked the ball but
00:36:01both their marks have been disallowed a lot of controversy over marks they were outlawed
00:36:07outside the 22s a lot of people said they shouldn't be in the game at all so perhaps
00:36:13Mr Fordham thinks so too Innocenti at the back has lost his headband so
00:36:21that's him number seven that's the seventh penalty against against Italy and this is
00:36:29Innocenti asking the referee about this repeated penalizing of the team
00:36:35speaks the good English does uh Mazzio Innocenti
00:36:44that's seven penalties to one in the game so far
00:36:47so
00:37:00whole feast of rugby ahead of New Zealand and the world and then the next 29 days
00:37:06that's one the Italians have got
00:37:10can their pack work it for Lauriciola
00:37:17Gazzone hasn't found the line Kerwin to Gallagher to Green
00:37:27Green swap wings that's Richard Lowe the new test cap gets his first run with the ball a nice set
00:37:33up too okay Kerwin's over on the other wing the two wingers swapped over Kerwin lost it ahead again
00:37:39so the two wingers swapped over grab and there it is lost forward rolling tumbling out of John
00:37:48Kerwin's hands and lost forward if the All Blacks are determined now it seems to throw the ball
00:37:54around and take it to the Italians they realize already that the tackling isn't that good from
00:37:59the Blues Jedid Palace and their scrum is going to take a pound
00:38:09Shelford, Tyhead, Ellen Witton, Fox in pass and the first try
00:38:16scored by an individual in the World Cup goes to Michael Jones and don't they just love it on Eden Park
00:38:30and what an ovation it came from a tight head Shelford to Witton to Fox and look for number
00:38:37seven Michael Jones they left him unguarded and he was across a try on his debut match
00:38:45it's a support play that got the try for Michael Jones he's had it all this year and last year
00:38:50supporting the ball carrier Fox digs in here see he looks inside and who's there but number
00:38:55seven Michael Jones and the try line was there and he was over it
00:39:02again the loose men Shelford to Ellen Witton to Fox who turns it in field and you can see in the
00:39:08background Jones in the roving role of the flying flanker and that was the first individual try for
00:39:13New Zealand in the Cup Series
00:39:20so
00:39:42Grant Fox with the conversion attempt
00:39:4431 minutes gone and Michael Jones from Auckland a try on his debut I spoke with him the other day
00:39:58and the enormous pride in his face and in his voice and in his persona certainly signaled to
00:40:05to everyone that this would be a big day for him and he's kept it
00:40:08by scoring that a very fine try to get his career away to a great start
00:40:15so now actually have got it all in like the man in the wheelbarrow with the wheelbarrow
00:40:19here's Alan Witton having a chance
00:40:24okay Shelford
00:40:29it's going to be crash bash by Alan Witton and Shelford I think and this man too
00:40:34you see there's Alan Witton again
00:40:37great run by Alan Witton
00:40:40hey Vic Gary's getting in there his twin brother
00:40:43ball backs looking awesome spinning to Stanley to Galahad to Green who took the ball straight
00:40:55knocked forward again right on the goal line now we saw that from Greg Green
00:41:00and Bob Luray a fortnight ago coming in at an angle to the passer
00:41:06coming in at an angle to the passer and changing the direction of the ball
00:41:11and my word it's very effective
00:41:18that was tremendous play by the All Blacks supporting the ball carrier and that's the
00:41:22sort of play we've seen on Eden Park from the Auckland team and they today were doing it for
00:41:27the All Blacks you can see it now the way the ball look at the wide open spaces they're looking for
00:41:31JJ Stewart a great believer in this getting out away from the high rent districts I suppose you
00:41:37can say and there's the coming in on the angle from Craig Green and the support play look at
00:41:41that 13s there 15s there right up with Green there was a knock on and we come back for the scrum
00:41:55yes the thing was look at the angle that Craig Green comes from Galahad he just changes the
00:41:59direction of the line of attack here it comes you see it's against the cut and that is a
00:42:04beautiful shot showing Craig Green flying through a very tiny gap but just lost forward by the New
00:42:11Zealand team so he's a danger man that's a speciality that he's picked up and you can
00:42:16see that Gazzone the fullback looking across where Green is the match resumes about seven
00:42:22minutes to go to halftime back to Gazzone
00:42:33this is Serafina Gazzone the highest capped Italian rugby player of all time
00:42:37his 60th international today and these are genuine internationals against other countries
00:42:41on the 22 meter line Kirk Fox Taylor Kerwin from the wing
00:42:51lots of Italians there and there were seven and eight of them
00:42:57there it is Kirk Fox Green and Mascialetti
00:43:04and Mascialetti takes the ball out of the touchline Craig Green's got to get it for the quick throw
00:43:11good play from Brian Fox there kicking it because they were running out of players there and when John
00:43:17Kerwin was taken out of play John Galahad went onto his wing so the All Blacks are at least
00:43:21are thinking about what they're doing out there there's the goal line to the left
00:43:35lots of communication oh and the Chetney's lost it right near the line
00:43:40Shelford has it
00:43:45very controlled run Kirk Fox Taylor
00:43:53under the goalposts again the All Blacks rucking it you see the big man Shelford driving well that
00:44:00ball was there maybe a New Zealand referee or maybe uh we'll give Mr Fordham the benefit of
00:44:07the doubt he might not have been able to see that from where he's standing but
00:44:10another referee might have let that one go a wee bit longer yeah the Italian definitely didn't
00:44:13like it but there it was and uh if you can see the ball it's uh it might be trapped but you've
00:44:18got to get your feet over it so this is the position the perfect position the All Blacks
00:44:25side can do anything they like they've got a big blind well they haven't got a blind really
00:44:29they've got an open side both ways drop kick two possibility
00:44:35and the pushover and the try is it i think did he lose it forward yes he did he lost it forward
00:44:44Shelford uh was the man there i think he had it under control it could be a bit slippery of course
00:44:49it's been raining on and off all day so now we have another one of those scrubs right underneath
00:44:54the goal post and you can see it's only about three meters out but it's Italy's ball but they
00:45:01don't really want to hook it because it's going to come back over the line and once it's over the
00:45:04line there's no offsides Lirigiola and down went uh Blackton Yellow and uh Lirigiola and Kirk just
00:45:18pushing that's a quite a healthy little rivalry they're having there two number nines David Kirk
00:45:26i think David Kirk a little bit more firepower behind him uh Keith and the All Black forwards
00:45:38okay clean heel Stanley
00:45:40Jones again or the number eight forward Artuso let him go Kirk is on his own
00:45:49the pressure was relentless and Kirk scored the try
00:46:05here is the build-up for you when are we a bit wrong here with Stanley and Kerwin
00:46:13not quite getting it together Jones running taken down but look really for number nine because when
00:46:18the ball is well positioned by Jones for the forwards to come in there's really no one on
00:46:23the blind side and David Kirk it was a three-on-one you see the poor man there
00:46:28uh the Italian defender Artuso had no chance at all
00:46:35uh
00:46:58right
00:47:05so
00:47:22there's Jones on the burst now what's the way when the ruck starts that David Kirk gets the ball back
00:47:28now this is a situation where Kutita had to tackle the man with the ball on defense he's got to
00:47:34tackle the man not his winger he went for John Kerwin left the gap try the kickoff down to the
00:47:41New Zealand captain who's just scored a try and a big cheer for him and already the New Zealand
00:47:45team in this game have equaled the number of tries they scored in six internationals last year
00:47:55Kirk wiped out but it's a free kick to Italy the Italians uh have had very few penalties
00:48:03and free kicks that's only their second in the game now they might try for a drop goal here
00:48:08they're brought up for a number 13 Oscar Kolodo but they're getting set for some sort of move
00:48:17Artuso here it goes back to Oscar Kolodo number 13
00:48:2013 and Italy are on the board with a top goal by Oscar Kolodo
00:48:34well that will be encouraging for the Italian team from the free kick the simple pass the
00:48:39forwards room there's a sort of a block in the decoy and nicely struck by Kolodo referee
00:48:44took a long time to see this one and got in good position but signaled it over
00:48:50they set up a very elaborate decoy system to the Italians
00:48:54with Artuso and Laurie Jolla going across and it was a good passing and good
00:49:06coming to the end of the first 40 minutes of this rugby world cup pool match
00:49:11Gazzone is under pressure and a penalty there to Italy so they've had two in the last few
00:49:18minutes so an elbow went in there on one of the defenders Rodolfo Ambrosio
00:49:27as I said before he's an Argentinian born his family still live there
00:49:32and in fact the Italians are after the Argentinians because some
00:49:35comments about the Italian rugby computer portal were reported back to
00:49:39Ambrosio by his parents in Buenos Aires and the Italians are very angry at what
00:49:44Porter said he said that they would comfortably beat Italy by 50 points so
00:49:52so the word has come back from Buenos Aires
00:49:54it's only looking very fast
00:50:09Taylor again Jones
00:50:12the boy has instinct to find the gaps
00:50:17Gary went 10 minutes out
00:50:19but only a short pass on the line has denied the All Blacks a try there
00:50:33they made it hard for themselves because there was no one on the other side
00:50:37they went to the left but I think that's half time actually with New Zealand ahead by 17
00:50:44no I think it is actually 17 points to three
00:50:49yes it looks like the referee Fordham has taken that chance to whistle halftime and
00:50:59there is the score at the break New Zealand 17 Italy 3 from Eden Park signaling to the
00:51:05New Zealand captain and to the Italians and this rugby world cup international pool match
00:51:12the second 40 minutes begins Rodolfo Ambrosio kicked off and at halftime the New Zealand team
00:51:19led by 17 points to three a half in which the All Blacks showed glimpses of some awesome power
00:51:26and here in the opening moment of the second half a penalty chance for the Italians and this could
00:51:31close the gap in a chance he looks like he wants to have a shot at goal it's about 40 meters out
00:51:36and this would be a good beginning for the Italian team in the second half
00:51:39oh it's a stronger wind than you think blowing actually from the uh the west uh probably uh
00:51:47south west and it comes through behind the number two stand at Eden Park right across towards about
00:51:54halfway from your right as we look up the field so it'll push the ball to the right hand post
00:52:04three tries to New Zealand in the first half a penalty try one to Jones
00:52:08one to Kirk Kolodo here number 13 had a drop goal
00:52:16and he's added the first points in the second half Oscar Kolodo and it's 17 points to six
00:52:26that was a good kick because he aimed it at the left hand post and the wind did the rest
00:52:30just push it a bit to the right and through it went a very good kick he cooks the ball very
00:52:34cleanly doesn't he keep he certainly does a very stylish play very fast too on the run
00:52:38but we haven't seen much back play from the Italians
00:52:44Grant Fox restarts a minute into the second half
00:52:49touched down by the court yes it's only went forward he lost control of it but he was going
00:52:57to force it down and knocked it forward so a five-meter scuff a very bad mistake by
00:53:03Gonzoni and he's not happy with himself possibly take away the advantage the Italians have built
00:53:11for themselves Fox Stanley straight after Kerwin lots of men ahead of him
00:53:27well there's the example of how not to play in the national rugby the mistakes have to be kept
00:53:32out Gonzoni fumbled the ball and the All Blacks had the scrum it went out along the chain and
00:53:37Warwick Taylor scored it came from the scrum there was all sorts of juggles from Fox then
00:53:43Taylor was left out but he was sprinting behind the backs out of the picture and Kerwin passes
00:53:48together here you see Taylor sprinted right around the back of them and that's classic
00:53:51second five eights play from Warwick Taylor good move by the All Blacks the double skip there's
00:53:57the first one there's a second one what's the way Taylor was out of the blocks and backing up now
00:54:01the quick hands from Gallagher made the try there quick bang away he goes gives it to Taylor and he
00:54:06out strips him on the outside looking at the down low replay we'll see it again watch the quick
00:54:13hands from John Gallagher there he is the red head in the center he's coming outside Kerwin
00:54:18he's running with the ball in one hand like the legendary pine tree used to do quick hands
00:54:23commits Gonzoni Taylor does the rest
00:54:27four tries today for New Zealand
00:54:31so that's the six point try that the challenge gave away that time by that couple behind the
00:54:46line but in fact it might cost them more in terms of morale and Grant Fox converts the try
00:54:54scored by Warwick Taylor setting the new record for second five eighth appearances for New Zealand
00:54:58today remember they juggled about at second five eighth last year and Arthur Stone was in the team
00:55:04this man missed the tour to France at the end of the year but he's back with a vengeance today
00:55:13the poor old Italians will have their tails down a bit there Richard Lowe waiting for the kickoff
00:55:20disastrous mistake by Gonzoni
00:55:28so
00:55:39Kerwin just like they do for Auckland
00:55:50David Kirk he found the blind side completely unguarded and exploited it beautifully
00:55:57make a nice run for his winger Kerwin
00:56:12if he'd gone in and tackled Kirk he would have given Kerwin a clean path down the sideline
00:56:26oh it's only known as a very temperamental player lots of gestures and lots of chat from
00:56:35him and shouting from the back he used to be a winger but as he's got on in age and slowed down
00:56:39a wee bit he's gone back to fullback but a man of 60 years in 60 internationals should not make
00:56:45mistakes like that
00:56:49oh
00:57:14they're very impressed Keith with the ability of the Italians to get the ball back to smuggle it
00:57:18back even though it was on the all-black side on a number of occasions but anyway it's the
00:57:23all-backs ball this time for the put in those scrums
00:57:26still a shambles that's Guido Rossi on the side against Richard Lowe
00:57:34Kirk look at Kerwin lurking up to the right
00:57:37oh
00:57:41loose men drive on into a new position and that man there number two Giorgio Morelli is upside
00:57:55number six is Gianni Farina
00:58:01well the all-blacks have ticked this one away to Fox they're running across the golf course
00:58:05there's the first surprise really of all-black tactics at 23 to 6 they didn't go for the set
00:58:11three points which Fox got put over they've gone instead for six
00:58:23well ground forward if you think about it it's refreshing well they actually messed it up a bit
00:58:27actually the backs and it was only the forwards that salvaged it for them i think they must have
00:58:31got a fright out of the centers because they didn't really have a move on they just had a quick
00:58:35tap kick but they still get the put in now about three meters out so
00:58:40the forwards perhaps might take control again
00:58:45Shelford Kirk and Craig Green has got all the time in the world to go through
00:59:02it's the classic left though move which Murray Mix did and Bernie Fraser and company made famous
00:59:09a few years ago your number eight moves left the halfback takes the pass and then the left
00:59:14winger waltzes in and look at that from Craig Green well i go back a bit further to the classic
00:59:19lifter with Brian Lahore Keith Quinn and it is one two three and Clive Bean plays with him he
00:59:25says he's going to put the ball down he doesn't and runs in to shorten the angle for Grant Fox
00:59:31well before today Craig Green hadn't scored a try on the test since way back in
00:59:34November 85 and Buenos Aires he's improved his total by two today
00:59:42and this is starting to look like it could wind up a very big score indeed in the opening rugby
00:59:46world cup match 27 points to six and here comes Fox's conversion attempt
01:00:04well it's just a few today has uh Grant Fox
01:00:17not to be his at the end that one
01:00:24these of course are new balls that they're uh playing with uh ones that uh we haven't
01:00:29played with before mitre balls and they just could be taking a bit of time to to get used to
01:00:35as the ball goes out on the full and Ambrosio wouldn't be too happy with that one
01:00:40so perhaps the Italians just losing the wheels a bit Keith
01:00:49there's the special sponsored balls that are being used now mitre balls and i suspect we're
01:00:54going to see some more rain it's just cooling down a little bit here at Eden Park you might
01:00:58see another shower blow in from the left hand side
01:01:03Gallagher
01:01:06Guttoni
01:01:2110 minutes gone second half 27 points to six
01:01:29well perhaps a little lack of leadership there he was uh Ambrosio is looking around
01:01:40wondering what to do and there were several different uh bits of advice but he's found the
01:01:45touch
01:02:03Ambrosio Collodo a bit slow from Ambrosio Guttoni
01:02:07oh just a bit sluggish in the Italian backs that time
01:02:11quite a few of them then Graham Thorne had their heads up looking for the big flying men in black
01:02:15coming at them yes i think i'd rather be playing in the black jerseys today than the blue ones
01:02:21Keith that i still think about these balls these balls that have come out
01:02:25onto the field with this rain they do get a bit slippery
01:02:31the left though move again Kirk
01:02:40okay
01:02:57so Laura Giola away to Ambrosio
01:03:00oh he's never going to get anywhere drinking and dodging ten yards from his own goal line
01:03:05Laura Giola again this is Guttoni does the same thing he gets caught
01:03:12now they're running it still
01:03:19but they're going to do things like that against an all-black side they've got to be a bit better
01:03:24at it because they had three goals before they finally did manage to get the ball into touch
01:03:30the number of sides have tried to run the ball for their own goal line
01:03:34a member of France a few years ago tried and Murray Taylor got a try i remember
01:03:41Ambrosio is the injured player he's having his first game of the Italian jersey today and what
01:03:47a baptism of fire it's been for him and there was uh he's paying the price there for jinking
01:03:53around on the spot and uh he really got hammered by several all-backs well it's been a great rugby
01:04:00occasion the rugby world cup is here and now it's happening and 25 000 Aucklanders perhaps a few
01:04:07more than that have come to Eden Park to enjoy their rugby and it's going to be on your screens
01:04:11and at the grounds throughout nine New Zealand venues and two in Australia throughout the next
01:04:1529 days supporters coming in from overseas supporting their teams it's a great feeling
01:04:20of an international sports event at last in New Zealand's national game
01:04:24the restart clean jump again from Ellen Whetton drive from the black pack
01:04:35Richard Lowe you see they're in complete control there there's almost no expression
01:04:39in their faces they don't have to exert individual pressure the mass force is there Taylor Stanley
01:04:47that's Artuso pushing off goal line just ahead Fox Kerwin Taylor
01:04:59Kerwin just forced out of the corner
01:05:07the back's doing good work backing up here and they pass the ball they get
01:05:11around the man that they've passed to in support of him
01:05:25McDow tapping down to Fitzpatrick Kirk away to Fox Stanley Taylor
01:05:33Galahad Green's gonna get three
01:05:53well it was a back move which began from tap down ball and there are a few misses here Taylor
01:06:00who's been the danger man today has left out and maybe the Italians just looked at it but two good
01:06:04long passes and the third one saw Craig Green in easy street as he goes in for his third
01:06:12the wide open spaces against the high density areas left behind
01:06:17the there's the third pass and now out to green and all Craig Green has to do is go over the line
01:06:30so
01:06:39so
01:06:52Fox has
01:06:57to
01:07:07so 33 points to six New Zealand leading
01:07:16so the first big mistake of rugby world cup 87 is the commentator that says green's got three
01:07:20when it's only two but lots of tries down the left wing side for New Zealand today a penalty
01:07:26try as well one to Michael Jones David Kirk and the tries piling up now that's six of them to New
01:07:32Zealand in the match
01:07:41you are that'll be two if he doesn't
01:07:46look at this Alan Witton having a very good game indeed bumble it halfway
01:07:53now I think the game is going to loosen up now completely for the All Blacks they've
01:07:56they've got what could be called a big cushion 33 points to six they're starting to enjoy
01:08:01themselves they've lost the tata they're confident now guests are living in camp for over a week
01:08:10together all sorts of nervous tension builds up but once they've shaken it off scored a few
01:08:15tries and now they're really starting to express themselves none more so than Alan Witton
01:08:23and that was offside play
01:08:29that's the number eight forward Giuseppe Attuso
01:08:33and they used Fox's left foot to go down for position
01:08:55New Zealand's next match in Rugby World Cup is at Lancaster Park in Christchurch against Fiji
01:09:00that's next to Wednesday Queens birthday Monday Wellington they're against Argentina
01:09:07Fox Taylor Kerwin Green
01:09:15see how quick Jones was there or well picked up by Shelford
01:09:31oh touch judges flag is out from oh here's trouble touch judges flag is out there it's
01:09:37Jim Fleming from Scotland two Australians and the Scott controlling this match and you can
01:09:43see that Bob Fordham had no idea of what happened there he has to take the line up by his word
01:09:49now there's a neutral situation here for the controlling of the game Kirk being spoken to
01:09:55and a penalty against New Zealand for that imprintment of there and I didn't have any
01:10:04idea what that was for Greg no but the all-black team started going back the
01:10:07moment Fordham started talking to his line-up by the Dutch judge
01:10:26if you try I want to try
01:10:33that's Patrick throws five is Gary Witt
01:10:40well he was so upside he just about started to before the game to get hold of David Kirk I'm so
01:10:45sorry
01:10:50um
01:11:1310 minutes to play in the match 33 points to six one of the nice things I like about the Italian
01:11:19team is the numbers on their shorts so you can see them coming that's uh Marcello Cutita
01:11:27I thought it was number two Keith one one two this is another young man who played a lot of
01:11:33rugby in South Africa he's Italian born his family went down there to work in Durban in
01:11:37a construction business that Mr Cutita senior had and this is young Marcello just his third
01:11:44game for Italy marking John Kerwin meantime Fox with that very precise kicking style of his
01:12:05it's a 30 point lead for New Zealand now in this rugby world cup match live from Eden Park in Auckland
01:12:14the crowd didn't really like Grant Fox having a kick at goal but you've got to remember that
01:12:21your mates have got to win well it's the first game of the rugby world cup and they've got to
01:12:26even put a bit of fear into their other opponents by putting up a good score here
01:12:31there's another reason too Graham you've got to keep piling points on because if there is a
01:12:34draw at the end of play in the quarter and semi-finals they play extra time now that'll
01:12:39be interesting in itself but if there is a tie at the end of extra time the points for and against
01:12:44will be divided into each other so every point will count in these matches so there'll be no
01:12:50slackening off because it could count in a tight situation in the quarters and semi-finals when
01:12:56it's knockout. Grant Fox again with that left foot a lot of people say that Grant Fox isn't
01:13:04that good on his left foot today he's kicked some really beauties. Murray Pearce just getting a bit
01:13:10slowly today he looks like he could even be limping passes through the picture again but
01:13:16perhaps have a look at Pearce yeah there he is not looking too happy taking a little break now the
01:13:24New Zealand team in fact they're looking at Fitzpatrick as well
01:13:3536 points to six so they've more than doubled the score from the first half
01:13:42and I really think Graham that the tides opened when Sorofini Ghizoni dropped that ball and
01:13:47fumbled behind the goal line and the All Blacks got the six-pointer straight away. Yeah it's not
01:13:50that that was going to make much difference overall in the game but you're dead right about
01:13:55that there is Ghizoni just dropped that ball it was sort of a such a casual touchdown for a 22
01:14:01and the ball just popped out of his hands. Matri starts again Luigiola
01:14:09I'd love to see those Italian backs have a run Graham they haven't really apart from very early
01:14:14on in the match the pack here just haven't really got the ball and that was the the fear that
01:14:19Marzio Innocenti had. They had all the chances in the first quarter of an hour and they didn't
01:14:27take them they just kept on kicking the ball up in the air as if they'd made the tactics of the
01:14:31distance. Fitzpatrick gets the strike Kirk to Fox to Taylor combination up and it's Gallaher
01:14:42Coutinho got him a good tackle Stanley there again
01:14:45well if the All Blacks continue to play like this and other teams continue to throw the ball
01:14:57around in the backs we're going to have some tremendous rugby in the next month. Here they
01:15:04go again Fox swing it wide Taylor who's had an excellent game Craig Green Alan Witten
01:15:12and the try is there for Richard Lowe
01:15:21sorry Goodell
01:15:32here it comes again out into the backs Taylor this time Green piling back now look for the
01:15:39props charging through number three as low number one is McDowell
01:15:46and Big Steve McDowell launches himself for the line
01:15:54here it comes again there's the crash ball from Craig Green there the forwards go over
01:16:00Alan Witten doing some great work turns the ball so well and sets it up
01:16:04for his prop forward Big Steve McDowell you can't stop him close to the line
01:16:10so
01:16:1442 points for six the kick has gone over
01:16:18and if this is official international that's the biggest score that New Zealand has posted
01:16:23in an international
01:16:30they've got a 42 against England in 1985 and they there's a match that was played between
01:16:36New Zealand and the United States in 1913 in which New Zealand scored just over 50 points
01:16:43so that's under threat now
01:16:50knocked on by Alan Witten we're starting to have to look
01:16:54towards the record book now Keith haven't we 42 points to six and all one-way traffic ready for
01:17:02the All Blacks
01:17:09Ambrosio those are the kind of kicks that aren't going to help the Italians
01:17:13well Maschiletti made a good catch
01:17:19Massimo Maschiletti
01:17:29Michael Jones off the back marking Maschiletti
01:17:39you see even the tap balls are bouncing kindly for the New Zealand team although
01:17:43that was a wild one that's in a champion halfway
01:17:50to Ambrosio
01:17:59so the quick throwing didn't work there as Sean Fitzpatrick came through
01:18:13and stopped the ball going five meters so Italy get their best scoring chance in the second half
01:18:20now have they got anything in the backs to show us
01:18:24oh
01:18:36that's Gary Whitton number five
01:18:54oh
01:19:12he was on their side in that advantage situation he might have come back for the scrum
01:19:16not that's going to make that much difference but the All Blacks in full flight again
01:19:21that's the 22 meter line there 15 minutes to play
01:19:35Fox picked it up beautifully Stanley that's the 22 there
01:19:41uh
01:20:04here it comes again Alan Whetton has just taken a feast of ball in the lineouts and when it was
01:20:09through the line out it was picked up beautifully by Fox Taylor again pushing into the defenders
01:20:14and drawing them but out on the left John Kirwan was waiting all the time a lovely handoff by
01:20:18Shelford and a good little jig by Fox and a nice little setup pass by Kirk made it easy for John
01:20:24Kirwan was actually made by Michael Jones getting to that ball very quickly and getting it back and
01:20:31Shelford picked it up Foxy had a little run on his own and then David Kirk thought about uh
01:20:36selling a dummy but then he gave it out to John Kirwan
01:20:49well Kirwan's another who hadn't had a try in a test match
01:20:52since way back in 1985 in Buenos Aires
01:21:06here it is uh you can see the way then that Michael Jones went down after that ball
01:21:23when the tackle was made and then the rest was Shelford, Kirk and then Kirwan made it look so easy
01:21:31well you can have all the organization in the world and all the planning
01:21:34but you cannot allow for one of rugby's great traditions the dog on the field
01:21:41we all go back to that famous game at Lancaster Park is it the touch judge
01:21:45Keith? They've got all security here everybody's got to wear tags at the World Cup to identify
01:21:49themselves and uh they're all like little like dog collars you wear them around your neck but
01:21:55that guy there he didn't have any ID
01:21:57so Ambrosio kicks off the Italians are beaten right out of the action now
01:22:05New Zealand have scored 48 points and they might be looking for 50. John Kirwan
01:22:10and what a way to bring up 50 points in an early test for the first time
01:22:24so
01:22:50here it came from the kickoff
01:22:54down to David Kirk into Fox and Kirwan begins a run mark the spot where he got the ball
01:23:00it was well back inside his 22 so it's an 18 meter run right up the field remember the All Blacks
01:23:07have never scored 50 points in a full-blown international but for this run and this try
01:23:12they have now. Well in the South Island and a lot of places around New Zealand they say he's not
01:23:19that good but I'm not going to say a thing because you just watch him he says it all for himself
01:23:24this is just marvelous running
01:23:30and at the end he just plays with them and scores the time
01:23:35Fox has converted it's 54 points to six and really just that look there with the back lip
01:23:42you could have sworn maybe it was a little halo over the man
01:23:45from Auckland and what two wonderful tries there were by John Kirwan
01:23:50come on
01:24:09the try has been scored and that was a technicality on the rule book which the
01:24:13All Blacks played brilliantly. David Kirk's asking the referee and he figured when the ball
01:24:17is kicked out of the full you have the choice of taking the kick again receiving the kick or
01:24:23taking the line out at halfway the All Blacks ran to halfway and took the quick line out and away
01:24:28they race for a try there's the end of it with Kirwan in passing to Kirk and they cooked it up
01:24:35over on that side and that is a shock try for the All Blacks they've scored three tries in a row
01:24:42and I don't think the Italians have touched it apart from the kickoff
01:24:48there's only one ball Keith you've got to watch it all the time
01:24:53just to explain that again when the ball is kicked off and goes out on the full
01:24:57you have three options you can receive the ball you can call for a scrum back at halfway
01:25:02or you can have a line out on the halfway mark the All Blacks ran for it took a quick line out
01:25:08and they scored a try I've never seen that happen before they must use the same ball of course
01:25:15which they did
01:25:18Fox keeps kicking the goals
01:25:2460 points are raised on the scoreboard by the All Blacks
01:25:28so now the Italian side are completely demoralized those two tries back to back
01:25:49two as quickly as that what are they going to do now the All Blacks are in the driving seat
01:25:55they've got all the horses in front of them 60 points to six Ambrosia kicks off
01:26:09look at this like a great black blanket Kirk Shelford oh lovely pass but just
01:26:18forward and the crowd would love to have seen this man Shelford set up a try for Jones
01:26:25me
01:26:42look at the power of that New Zealand team that can just come around
01:26:45now they're driving away there's halfway
01:26:48oh
01:26:55scanning the record books again New Zealand wants to beat Uruguay by 64
01:27:00so they might pass that one on the way to that wasn't an official international of course again
01:27:04against a national team five minutes to play
01:27:08oh
01:27:15Galahad
01:27:29so
01:27:37again running from a long long way out out along the back line Fox to Taylor you see Fox coming in
01:27:43assistance Galahad in and pushing through the gaps which are a mile wide late in the game
01:27:48Green had the ball on the left wing and his in pass eventually finds Joe Stanley staying in
01:27:55support from Galahad and away goes Joe Stanley and scores
01:28:03that's him I think Joe Stanley from the Ponsonby club in Auckland but
01:28:08you can see the try was made by the backing up of the all-black backs
01:28:18and you watch this that the way the ball is spun from Taylor he ran up to the man
01:28:24and gave the ball out of the skip move to Galahad now just watch John Galahad
01:28:27the way he keeps in support of Craig Green and the quick hands again
01:28:32giving it to Joe Stanley that was John Galahad's try but Joe Stanley scored it
01:28:46so
01:28:48Joe Stanley's first try in a test match the all-blacks have scored 11 tries today
01:28:57Fox has kept 20 points
01:29:05so that one has not gone over 64 points to six
01:29:20well those that came to Eden Park will be delighted I'm sure
01:29:26the sort of hushes that are over the ground keeps us if some of the people can't believe
01:29:31or something like that I think it's uh there's a bit of a buzz of uh discussion now how good is
01:29:37this all-black performance today they've been absolutely awesome how good is this opposition
01:29:41okay it's not the greatest but uh the New Zealand team have certainly looked awesome in the way
01:29:46they've plowed through the centre in the second half eight tries in the second half and they're
01:29:50playing the game at such speed that the Italians can only be bewildered at it out along the backs
01:29:55again Fox Taylor left out Stanley Galahad up green
01:30:03Shelford great support for Shelford Green again last forward Kitsune
01:30:16by our reckoning about three minutes to play but the referee of course shall be the sole judge
01:30:25yes there's going to be a penalty there I think unless something happens here
01:30:35oh dear it's only having another bad one that time it's a penalty to Italy for offside play
01:30:43by New Zealand team oh you can't see by the sun you can see that that's fair enough
01:30:47you look at those long shadows the ball coming up now they're at the backs up to Marcello Cutita
01:30:55oh dear well it's all going wrong for the Italians now
01:31:03this all-black team has completely blown the doors off the Italians this afternoon
01:31:07at 64 points to six and there could be more yet with the flow the steady flow of possession
01:31:17for the New Zealand team look at that uncontested so many takes by Alan Witt
01:31:36Fox Taylor
01:31:46and Franco Burney touches down and Michael Jones was so close to getting that second try key
01:31:5664 to 6
01:32:00so all black ball all black ball will they try the left though again
01:32:03he's going left the Ruchiola was uh more ready that time
01:32:17oh
01:32:37very close to the end of the game you can see the
01:32:39feet of the kids on the sideline about to pounce with their autograph books
01:32:47Green is away to the left
01:32:54so will there be one last try by the New Zealand team that's scored at 11
01:32:58starting with the pebbly try
01:33:02Fox Green
01:33:06and the try is scored and it's appropriate that Alan Witt should get it because he's in a good game
01:33:1268 to 6 and underneath up comes Alan Witt and he has scored try number 12 for New Zealand
01:33:26you know I thought Craig Green was going to do the decent thing and score that third try for me
01:33:29after all the Graham Thorne but he didn't quite get there but really it was very appropriate
01:33:35that Alan Witt should be on hand right at the last minute to score try number 12
01:33:40the loose boards have been magnificent in the second half what's a long pass again
01:33:45out to stay inside there to Craig Green he's so strong going through and inside
01:33:50Alan Witt who's been sniffing the ball all day and over he goes so the game is over
01:33:57the game is over Alan Witt had the last say the conversion went over for a final score of 70
01:34:05points to six for New Zealand
01:34:09and Alan Witt one of the big contributors there for the New Zealand team
01:34:14so to the rest of the forward back yes it was a tremendous effort in the second half by the
01:34:21All Blacks they started very slowly I think it was quite a shaky start wasn't it Keith
01:34:26but then as they gained in confidence they started to gel their game started to gel
01:34:32and then of course the floodgates opened when Gazzone that tragic knock on over the goal line
01:34:39the try was scored from then from there the sixth point try which really got their tails down but
01:34:45for then all the All Blacks started to play like we know they can and on Eaton Park which of course
01:34:51is their favorite ground they just didn't give Italy a look at it well it began with a penalty
01:34:58there's Wayne Shelford who did so well I began with a penalty try after 13 minutes
01:35:02here come the All Blacks off with their souvenir jerseys pretty brave beginning the two flankers
01:35:08forwards Gardein shaking hands with his opposite there's Oscar Collodo Wayne Shelford in comes the
01:35:13hooker Giorgio Morelli disappointed the Italians Craig Green I wish he would have got three tries
01:35:18that would have been nice for a commentator who can't add up all the time Innocenti is
01:35:22the captain there and off come the New Zealand team they scored the biggest win today they've
01:35:27ever scored in an international previously they had 42 to 15 against England in 1985 and then they
01:35:36had the United States won in 1913 which was 51 to 3 but today they had 70 points to 6 against Italy
01:35:43and Innocenti the captain from Petrarca will be I'm sure a devastated and disappointed man
01:35:49that's a huge score for the Italians to consider as they face their next match
01:35:54yeah 70 points of six is what Fred Allen would call a good old-fashioned hiding
01:35:58and really Italy didn't have a look in from about the first quarter of an hour but I was very
01:36:02impressed with the way they got the ball in the first quarter of an hour I only wish they'd spun
01:36:06the ball a bit more kick instead of kicking it up in the air as if they said okay these are the
01:36:12tactics no matter what happens we'll play them if only they'd spun the ball in I'm very disappointed
01:36:18totally dejected but standing waiting to shake the hands of those players who are yet to come
01:36:26off this was the biggest day in Italian rugby history to play in the world cup to play the
01:36:32opener in the world cup and I guess they'll be devastated at how it went but really they were
01:36:38pretty brave in their opening endeavors and had things been just a little different they might
01:36:42have put more on the early stages of the match but they would never have matched the all-blacks
01:36:46I think you'll agree that this all-black team was as good as their score a genuine score of
01:36:5270 to 6 and my word what a wonderful try by John Kerman will have to hold as a memory from this
01:36:59opening rugby world cup match he sprinted 18 meters to get the try and there are the two
01:37:05captains Kirk and Innocenti and I think they're going to do a great job and I think they're going
01:37:11Kirk and Innocenti and I think Mazzio Innocenti
01:37:14might not be able to give us too much in the interview situation that's coming up
01:37:22okay with me now the two successful captains or one successful captain David Kirk first
01:37:27to our Italian friend Mazzio Innocenti disappointed I suppose Mazzio yes it's very hard today they
01:37:34have always the ball in the second half it's impossible for us nothing you really started
01:37:40off very well the first 10 minutes for you were extremely good part of the game yes but
01:37:45the all-blacks are too powerful for us now I hope in the future something to better maybe
01:37:50Argentina a bit more to your liking now I think of it to the match of today of course okay well
01:37:56congratulations thanks for being part of this opening match in the world cup and I'll speak
01:38:00to successful captain David Kirk David well done tremendous effort and a little bit of a slow start
01:38:06there but once the floodgates open yeah a slow start I agree Philip yeah we played okay we played
01:38:11pretty well we were a little bit less efficient than we'd like to be but we scored some great
01:38:15tries I'm pleased about that we were picking out the individual performances of Michael Jones and
01:38:19Alan Whetton early on in the game but then when everyone started getting into the act it was a
01:38:23bit difficult to pick a feature player well I agree it's a team game and I thought the whole
01:38:27team played well we're practicing and aiming to play a team type of game and that's what we did
01:38:32today I think there has been comments made that the all-blacks are always a bit slow in the first
01:38:37test of a series but there wouldn't be any problems there I would imagine no we did all right today as
01:38:41you say we started a bit slowly and perhaps a little bit nervous I think our first test match
01:38:45of the season but we finished pretty well David Kirk thank you very much we'll look forward to
01:38:49talking to you later so there it is there was a lot in the match today to savor a slow start by
01:38:58the New Zealand team but then they finally got the point production working and look at that
01:39:0412 tries eight conversions two penalties to a penalty and a drop goal 70 points to six the
01:39:11tries were scored by the wingers to each and Fox kicked so brilliantly in the end landing from the
01:39:17sideline that New Zealand will now be a strong contender in that form to really shake the opposition
01:39:22around in their group and in the matches which will follow undoubtedly for the New Zealand team
01:39:27an emphatic beginning by the New Zealanders in rugby's first ever world cup match at Eden Park
01:39:33on an afternoon which will hold as a special one in New Zealand's rugby history
01:39:38they beat Italy in the opening game by 70 to 6
