TPP Accuses Authorities of Unlawful Searches in Ko Wen-je Investigation

The Taiwan People's Party is questioning the motive and method of investigations into members of their party, including founder Ko Wen-je. Ko remains in custody after being accused of profiteering and misusing campaign funds.

00:00Political turmoil continues for Taiwan's third-largest party, the Taiwan People's Party,

00:05and its founder, Ke Wen-je, now in the hands of the authorities.

00:10At a press conference at the party headquarters on Saturday morning,

00:13accusations that authorities overstepped during their search.

00:30Within the space of a few days, TPP party leader Ke Wen-je took a leave of absence as the chair of the party.

00:49His home and party headquarters were searched, and he was swarmed by media outside his residence,

00:54and then he was taken into custody.

00:57Ke initially refused questioning on Friday night, but prosecutors later detained him.

01:01Ke is one of several high-ranking party members under investigation.

01:05He stands accused of profiteering from real estate deals during his tenure as Taipei mayor,

01:10and of misusing campaign funds during his run for president, charges he denies.

01:16Taiwan's courts are meeting today to discuss Ke's case,

01:20with developments expected over the course of the weekend,

01:23developments that could decide the future of Ke's party,
