00:00What was your main takeaway and the reaction from Thursday
00:08night in Boulder? Well, they found a way to pull it out.
00:11Something that they did in the early part of the season but
00:13the glaring weaknesses of this team seem to still be the
00:17offense and defense aligns as it relates to the rushing
00:20attack and as it relates in regards to run support and that
00:23linebacker play I think needs to get much better from last
00:26week to this week when they face off against Dylan Rayola
00:30and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They're already seven-point
00:33dogs in this matchup. We talked about Shadour Sanders
00:35stepping up 400-yard performance, Travis Hunter but
00:38when they had to run the football Kevin in the fourth
00:40quarter to sustain and close that game out, they failed to
00:44do that and that's the strength right now in Nebraska. We know
00:47that Matt Rule has built this team in the interior. He now
00:50has the quarterback and trigger man to lead it. It's a
00:53different team than when Jeff Sims went into Boulder and got
00:56boat race last year. So, they're going to need a much
00:59better effort and again, they could score at will but that
01:02defense to me needs to kick it up a notch. Totally fair. It
01:07did in the game though. They were pitching a second half
01:09shutout and until the two-minute or four-minute drive,
01:12I gave four-minute drill if you will for North Dakota State.
01:15Yup. They found the end zone. Ken Miller had a great game on
01:17the ground. Ended up getting, you know, well through his
01:20passing total as well which was a miss by me in the game but
01:23and for Colorado, I I don't want to change narratives and
01:27I'm not saying that you guys are but I think maybe some out
01:29there are either changing narratives or not aware. North
01:32Dakota State is not Furman. This is not. Sure. Southern
01:36Utah. This is not Murray State. It's a real football team here
01:41that if they moved up a level would be expected to within a
01:45few years, contend for bowls. So, for Colorado, they get a
01:50win. They almost covered. They ended up not being able to do
01:54so and their stars were stars and I think that's the selling
01:58point of the Buffaloes is they're very best and I don't
02:02mean starting twenty-two but I mean they're top three to four
02:06guys they believe can match up with anybody in the country. I
02:10I don't think you can stress enough how interesting it is
02:15that arguably the best player at the most important position
02:19in the sport is on Colorado for 13.1 yards per attempt,
02:24four touchdowns, and an insane not his fault pick. Shador
02:28Sanders, a game changer, Joe. He is. I just want to say like
02:31in college basketball and I'll bring this up. One player can
02:34take over and make that or carry that. For sure. Yeah. In
02:37football, it is a team effort and I think that's the weakness
02:40when we just look at Colorado. Okay. Is it not just in terms
02:44of that match up against North Dakota State but actually
02:46challenging potentially for a big twelfth championship and
02:49more importantly, a college football playoff appearance.
02:52The interior needs to get better. So, they're they they
02:55have Ferraris on the outside and what's your door? But now
02:58they need to protect them and and when push comes to shove
03:01that interior still in my opinion, week one is weak. If
03:05it progresses, maybe I'll change my tune. Listen, I think
03:07the reactions are going to be swift regardless of how you
03:10feel about Colorado and that can kind of inform your take on
03:14this Buffs team. For me, I think if you're realistic about
03:18the ceiling of success for CU, it's getting to a bowl game for
03:22just the second time since 2008 at least at six wins. They did
03:27make it in 2020 in the COVID shortened season but their
03:31first true bowl appearance since 2016 and the win total
03:35remains the same. Five and a half. The over has the juice. It
03:39was the number four D on and the Buffs entering the year. It
03:43remains that price after the season opening victory over
03:46North Dakota State but if you're trying to be overly
03:49optimistic about the Buffs, I'm not sure you saw anything on
03:52Thursday. You did not already know. You have two potential
03:56top five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft and the star power shined
04:01for Colorado on Thursday. Shador Sanders, four hundred and
04:05forty-five yards. Travis Hunter, three receiving
04:10touchdowns, played a hundred and twenty-nine snaps and had
04:13a hundred and thirty-two receiving yards. He might be
04:16the best wide receiver in college football if that's all
04:18he did but of course, he plays on the defensive side as well.
04:22It's why his Heisman Trophy price was slashed in half and
04:26then some. Sixty to one before the year got started. Now,
04:30currently at a twenty-five to one number but Kev, I think
04:34there's so much notoriety around Colorado because of
04:37Deion Sanders and all of the national attention he has
04:40brought to CU. Some good, some bad. I would say overly
04:45positive conversation around what was a dormant football
04:48program in Boulder for a couple of years. You seem to be a
04:52little bit more optimistic about Colorado perhaps than
04:54Lacey and I. You bet their preseason win total last year
04:57over three and a half which they did. They won four of their
05:00first six games. What do you think is a realistic ceiling of
05:05success for CU this season?
05:10Well, I, I, okay, fine. I think it's realistic. They win the
05:14big twelve. I don't think it's likely. Again, challenge me on
05:20this. So, so let me, okay, go ahead and I'll I'll follow up.
05:22Sanders. Yeah. Could very easily be the best quarterback
05:25in the big twelve. Possibly but but I think the big twelve is
05:29loaded with about ten to twelve. I'm not saying that's
05:31a challenge. But he's there and I wouldn't just say the big
05:33twelve. I'd say all of Colorado. Right. When that's
05:37the case, you have the potential. Look, I'm going to
05:42make another dangerous comparison. LSU's defense was
05:45atrocious last year, okay? But Jaden Daniels and that offense
05:50put up so many points. They didn't get routed in those
05:54games. Rarely, right? I mean, the Ole Miss game, it was it
05:57was still the very, very last whistle, right? The, I know the
06:00FSU game looked ugly but that was a weird one all in all the
06:03the way it played out. Like, listen, you're talking about
06:06the ceiling. See, that's kind of my, this is what where I'm
06:08different on people. Ceiling, if you have the best quarterback
06:11in college football, a lockdown corner, and one of the fifteen
06:16best wide receiver rooms in the sport, your ceiling is
06:20significantly high. The problem is they live in a very big
06:23house. Yeah. Big ceiling, low base. Right. That's the problem
06:26with Colorado. It is but again, it still comes down to the
06:29protection, right? Doris Sanders is not as mobile as like
06:32Jaden Daniels, right? So, even if the protection where broke
06:36down, Jaden Daniels could take the game over with his legs.
06:39Right. I don't necessarily think we can see that out of
06:42Shador. Is he mobile? Absolutely. But I don't think
06:44we're seeing 150 yards on the ground. Yeah. If that offensive
06:47line allows fifty-six sacks like they did last year. Let me
06:50also do it for 445, right? Like, again, listen, I'm not even
06:53trying to, I think he's better to throw the football in
06:54Jaden Daniels. Let me ask you this. Yeah. I think you're high
06:56on the, on the, on the team. If they beat Nebraska last, next
07:00week. Yeah. When they beat last year, thirty-six fourteen.
07:02That's stunning. Stunning. I see, I don't know how that's
07:06stunning. Stunning for me based on Nebraska because wow, it
07:09would be another tough year I think then in Lincoln and
07:12Colorado would be better than I expect. I think that Colorado's
07:16biggest advantage over a program like North Dakota State.
07:19Albeit an FCS power but they're dominant in the trenches and
07:23that wins and has consistently an FCS college football where
07:27Colorado took advantage and rightfully so was through the
07:30aerial attack. Nebraska's a lot better defensively and has the
07:34athletes to compete with Colorado on the outside and I
07:37think Nebraska's ground game is going to expose Colorado more
07:40than North Dakota State was capable of.
