Thousands of Tasmanian homes without power after two days of severe winds

Tasmanians are bracing for more severe weather after being battered by strong winds and rain for the past two days.

00:00Tasmanians have been battered with strong winds and rain over the past two days, and

00:07we've got another front crossing later today and another one tomorrow morning, so we're

00:11not out of the woods yet.

00:13There have been multiple trees coming down over roads and on power lines.

00:18Now 14,000 Tasmanian properties woke up to no power this morning.

00:23A TAS Networks spokesperson said this was unprecedented and they've never seen this

00:28many homes without power.

00:30This is now down to around 8,000 properties at the moment, but TAS Networks is warning

00:36people that there will be long delays in restoring that power.

00:40Now the SES have responded to 54 calls for assistance in the past 24 hours, and that

00:46is mostly due to flood damage and partial roofs coming off homes.

00:50There are 11 flood advice warnings across the state, and there are three flood watch

00:55and acts, and that is in the Derwent River, North Esk River, and Meander River.

01:00Now near the Meander River in Deloraine, we saw multiple properties with flood damage yesterday,

01:06and lots of flood damage is expected for later this afternoon.

01:10That is when the river levels will rise and they're expecting moderate flooding.

01:15The Bureau of Meteorology, Mick Conway, says everywhere today is either a storm force or

01:19a gale force warnings, and he's never seen anything like that before.

01:24Unfortunately, we did have snow come down here in Tasmania.

01:28There was lots of snow on the mountains, and so if the weather does light up, we can see

01:33people go skiing, possibly later today.

01:36The SES is urging Tasmanians to make sensible decisions, avoid going out into coastal waters

01:43as we do have those storm force winds, and to never drive through flood waters.
