00:00
So, uh, Adam Kaufman joins us now from, uh, Boston.
00:08
Of course you can see him on sports grid across the board.
00:10
He's on all kinds of shows.
00:11
God bless him.
00:12
Uh, he and I have known each other forever and I still hate him.
00:16
So, um, the Red Sox won last night.
00:20
Finally.
00:21
I mean, their season's been going down the drain, but they're four out of that wild card.
00:28
Do you still, and does people in Boston still believe that they can write the ship and get
00:34
a wild card at the very least?
00:36
Cause that's all they're playing for.
00:39
Well, listen, as you well know, Boston is a city filled with optimists.
00:44
So clearly everyone is thinking high on the Red Sox and their chances that nevermind making
00:50
the playoffs as a wild card.
00:52
It's a world series or bust.
00:53
No, I mean, look, I, I personally am not high on their chances at this point.
00:58
Now, if you would talk to me right around the trade deadline a few weeks back, I would
01:02
have sung you a different song, but obviously things have gone south of late and they've
01:06
really failed to get out of their own way.
01:09
The pitching has been a problem.
01:10
And like you said, they're sitting with this deficit with the third and final wild card
01:15
spot in the American league and clearly multiple teams in front of them as well.
01:19
Is there time?
01:20
Sure.
01:21
You know, we're talking about roughly 30 games remaining in the regular season.
01:24
They are capable of making a run.
01:26
It's just, you're asking a lot in terms of knocking one of these teams out that is simply
01:32
playing better than them in front of them.
01:34
It's not going to be easy, impossible.
01:36
No, but not going to be easy.
01:38
I just don't think unfortunately they're built for it right now and, and shame on them because
01:42
they could have done more at the deadline to address some of that.
01:45
And they obviously could have done much more coming into the season to set themselves up
01:49
better for success.
01:51
Not too differently from a team in Foxborough that's getting ready to kick off at season
01:55
a little bit.
01:57
So they play next at Detroit, then they go to city field for three games with the Mets,
02:04
but then they have the white socks at home.
02:06
That's easy pickings.
02:08
Then they have the board or three at home and then they play four at the boogie down
02:15
in the Bronx against their rival Yankees.
02:19
So like that takes you to mid September.
02:23
How do you think they'll do in those types of series with the Yankees, O's, White Sox
02:28
and Mets and even the Tigers, which are up next?
02:31
Yeah, I just don't see how you can outline that and how someone can hear that and say,
02:37
yeah, no, they're going to make up ground.
02:38
They'll be in the playoff position by the time those series, you know, mid September
02:42
rolls around.
02:43
I just think it's, it's a daunting road at this point in time.
02:47
There's way too much inconsistency in this team.
02:49
The bullpen continues to be a problem.
02:52
Again, the starters are, are, you know, just a little kind of unreliable across the board,
02:58
you know, with very rare exception.
03:00
The only thing that you can generally count on is that there's going to be offensive production.
03:03
There are going to be runs.
03:04
The problem is they're going to allow a bunch of runs as well.
03:07
And so you mentioned it, you know, there are some easier series in there, but I'm just,
03:13
I'm past the point, maybe it's the better in me, Scott, but I'm past the point of taking
03:17
teams like the Tigers or the White Sox for granted or the Orioles while they're reeling
03:22
it at points in time as well.
03:23
I just, anyone, it's, it's not quite the any given Sunday, if you will, but I mean, we've
03:29
seen the White Sox or even a team like the Athletics who I'm on today, you know, the,
03:34
these teams, I realized like this year's White Sox are more like last year's A's than being
03:38
comparable this year.
03:39
But these teams that have nothing to play for are sort of the most dangerous ones.
03:44
They're pesky, they're annoying.
03:47
They don't quit.
03:48
They don't get out of the way.
03:49
And there was just a little too much mid-season cruise control out of the Red Sox for a team
03:53
that really couldn't justify playing that way.
03:59
So before we talk about the Patriots, I wanted to tell you, I haven't seen you since my birthday
04:04
at the end of July.
04:05
And I got a pair of, I got two pairs of kicks for basketball.
04:11
One was the new KDs and I pulled out the old new KDs that I got last Christmas today
04:19
because I left my, I played ball the other night, Monday night, and I left the soaking
04:24
wet 400 pound watered down shirt that I wore in my bag on top of my jaws and the sweat
04:32
just permeated for two days and the water dripped into my shoes for two days.
04:38
Not only did they get soaking wet with sweat smell, but they actually reek.
04:43
My jaws now I'm convinced are ruined with smell and reek.
04:48
And so today I busted out my new KDs, but the point of this conversation is you won't
04:53
believe this.
04:54
I got the new tatums for my birthday.
04:57
And as you know, not only do I hate Jason Tatum, I hate the Celtics more than any team
05:02
on earth in any sport.
05:05
So they're the lavender ones.
05:07
And I have to say they're bad-ass they're beautiful and I can't wait to play in them,
05:12
but I will never admit to anyone that they're tatums.
05:18
So when, when I go to play, people are, man, it's got, it's got the JT on there.
05:22
People have eyes.
05:23
They can see it.
05:24
It's got it.
05:25
Got it right there on the, on the tongue.
05:26
No, no, no.
05:27
They're going to go for all.
05:28
Those are bad-asses.
05:29
And I'm going to say, yeah, I don't know.
05:30
I don't know who's there.
05:31
I don't know who's she better.
05:33
I just sit well, you better, man, you better hope that you don't hoop better than ever
05:38
before while we're in the JTs, because you will know you will have an, a deep introspection
05:43
as to what that means for you.
05:45
You're going to get superstitious about it.
05:47
It's going to, you're going to become a Celtics fan.
05:49
You're going to be out there wearing a tatum Jersey when all of a sudden done.
05:52
Now what's going to happen is that your team's going to go under because they paid two guys
05:58
over a half a billion dollars and they can't afford to pay anyone else.
06:02
And they're going to have your boy, Richard will be the other best player on the team
06:06
for the next 10 years.
06:09
That's why someone like Bezos with deep pockets needs to come in and pay the 6 billion to
06:13
buy this team and you know, keep paying into that second apron and keep this thing going
06:17
for a little while.
06:18
They got a window here, Scotty, we don't want to lose it.
06:21
So the Patriots are going to be the worst team in the NFL this year.
06:26
I don't think so, but they'll be in the conversation.
06:29
They'll be a, you know, probably a top five pick again, depending on how all of this shakes
06:33
out.
06:34
And obviously, and I know part of what I'm here to talk about, whoever winds up being
06:38
the starting quarterback for this team to begin the year could potentially dig them
06:41
a little bit of a hole.
06:42
It may not matter actually, given the schedule and it is, you know, a little overwhelming
06:47
at the beginning of the year.
06:48
And, and this is also a team that is going to be in all likelihood underdogs in every
06:53
single game, pre-season underdogs for all 17 games.
06:58
And that's unlikely to change too much along the way.
07:01
It's just a, it's a very talent deficient team, unfortunately.
07:05
That being said, you got some bad teams there, man.
07:08
I mean, you got the Panthers, you got the Broncos, you got some, so it's not like a
07:13
runaway under four and a half wins, you know, they're going to be right there at the number
07:17
one pick next year.
07:19
I think there are some teams that are going to put up a fight for that spot.
07:23
So, did May outplay Brissette because I think Brissette sucks and I always have, and I think
07:29
the kid's better than him, flat out.
07:32
So Drake May unequivocally outplayed Jacoby Brissette in the pre-season games and in recent
07:37
weeks during training camp, Gerard Mayo, the head coach, of course, you know, we need to
07:41
keep saying that with no Bill Belichick anymore.
07:43
He's off doing his litany of media deals at this point in time.
07:46
Mayo said just a couple hours ago that he has made a decision on who the starting quarterback
07:51
is going to be, but he hasn't told the players yet and therefore he's not telling the media
07:55
yet that's going to come tomorrow.
07:57
So probably, you know, less than 24 hours from right now, we're going to know whether
08:01
it's Brissette or May under center for week one in Cincinnati.
08:06
The thing is, I just, I don't understand in what world it wouldn't be Jacoby Brissette.
08:11
And that's not me sitting here saying it should be, it's just, this is what the Patriots have
08:15
been preaching all the way along.
08:17
This is what they have been laying out as the plan.
08:19
They wanted to bring in the veteran bridge guy to groom the rookie and not put him out
08:24
there before he is ready.
08:26
And you can make the case that he's maybe a little bit more ready right now than they
08:30
expected him to be as, as we sit here in late August.
08:34
But that being said, the offensive line in front of whichever guy it is playing quarterback
08:39
is an absolute disaster.
08:41
You can't put May out there as it exists right now and risk getting the man literally killed.
08:47
Unfortunately, your crash test dummy right now is Jacoby Brissette for at least the first
08:51
month of the season.
08:52
As far as I see it anyway, I don't know why Mayo is dragging his feet in this announcement
08:57
because the only thing that would be the least bit surprising, nevermind, shocking would
09:03
be if he says, yes, Drake May is the week one starter.
