Prosecutors File Revised Indictment Against Trump in Election Subversion Case

In the midst of political and legal battles, Donald Trump has been hit with a new indictment. The charges once again focus on the former U.S. president's attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden.

00:00Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been putting all his energy into political battles.

00:05But now he faces another fight on the legal front.

00:09U.S. prosecutors have filed a revised indictment against him over his efforts to overturn his

00:15election defeat to Joe Biden in 2020.

00:19Prosecutors are trying to salvage the case against Trump after a Supreme Court ruling

00:24gave broad immunity to former presidents.

00:27This indictment lays out the same four charges, including conspiring to defraud the United

00:33States.

00:34But it narrows down the allegations and focuses not on Trump as then-president, but Trump

00:41as a candidate seeking re-election.

00:44Trump's running mate condemned the revised indictment from special counsel Jack Smith.

00:49I haven't read the whole thing, but it looks like Jack Smith doing more of what he does,

00:53which is filing these absurd lawsuits in an effort to influence the election.

00:58Trump has previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, linked in part to his false claims

01:03that the 2020 election was stolen from him and his urging of supporters to march on the

01:08Capitol in protest.

01:11The subsequent attack on the seat of the U.S. Congress, violent and unprecedented.

01:17But a trial is unlikely to happen before this election, just over two months away.

01:22If the American voter chooses Kamala Harris, there's a real chance that the president will

01:28have to press his defense in court and we'll have to find out through our normal legal

01:35processes whether he's guilty of the charges against him.

01:39If the president wins, that process will never take place.

01:44For Trump then at stake in this election, not just the presidency, but possibly also

01:50staying out of prison.
