Karen Carney, a football legend, this is not your game really is it, so why are you here
00:05
you please?
00:06
Because I'm an advocate for women's sports, we're a year to go till the Red Roses are
00:12
going to be here in the opening game of the Women's Rugby World Cup, so I'm here to champion
00:17
support the women that are going to be playing in that, and all up and down the country throughout
00:21
the tournament you're going to be able to see them because the games are going to be
00:24
held like I said in various stadiums up and down around England.
00:28
And will you be here in Sunderland on the big day?
00:30
I hope so, I'm desperately trying to be there so if not I'll be definitely watching it as
00:35
well.
00:36
Right, hope to see you there, thank you very much Karen.
00:40
Michael Mordy, leader of Sunderland City Council, quite excited about this coming event, what's
00:46
in it for Sunderland?
00:48
It's an absolutely amazing opportunity for Sunderland to host the opening game of the
00:52
2025 Women's Rugby World Cup, it puts Sunderland on an international stage, it shows the city
00:58
that's transforming, it gives us an opportunity to show off everything that is great about
01:02
Sunderland and I'm delighted to welcome the Red Roses to kick off their campaign for the
01:08
2025 Women's Rugby World Cup here in Sunderland and hopefully we'll set them off on a journey
01:12
to winning the cup at the end of the tournament.
01:14
So you're hoping for a good advert for our city?
01:17
Absolutely, Sunderland's got a reputation as an events city, we've got a long history
01:21
of the World Triathlon Series, the Tour of Britain, we've held England men's games here,
01:27
this really showcases Sunderland as an events city, I couldn't be prouder to have the opening
01:32
game, not just any game, the opening game, when all the eyes of the world will be on
01:36
Sunderland, on England, and I'm delighted it's here in Sunderland.
01:43
Sarah Massey, managing director of the Women's World Cup 2025, welcome to Sunderland, what's
01:49
going on here then?
01:51
Well, we are here in Sunderland because we are celebrating one year to go to the Women's
01:55
Rugby World Cup in 2025, and this is where we are kicking off the tournament as a whole,
02:01
so here in Sunderland the Red Roses will play their first match here in 12 months' time.
02:06
This is going to be packed to the rafters, it's going to have an amazing electric atmosphere
02:11
and we're going to see some incredible competition on this field of play in just 12 months' time.
02:16
A hot ticket?
02:19
It's going to be a really hot ticket, tickets go on sale on the 24th of September for this
02:22
match.
02:23
We've got accessible ticket pricing, we're really attracting the family audience, so
02:28
lots of opportunities to buy tickets, to bring the family, be part of this incredible spectacle
02:34
and be part of this amazing once in a lifetime chance to see a Women's Rugby World Cup here
02:39
in the North East at the Stadium of Light.
02:41
It's a truly global event for Sunderland, thank you very much for your time.
