00:04Emmanuel Macron has vowed to continue talks to try to form a new government

00:09after rejecting one led by the New Popular Front.

00:12On Monday, the president said the left-wing coalition,

00:15which won the most seats in parliament after July elections

00:18but not enough to govern, would not have enough support in a no-confidence vote.

00:24Such a government would therefore be up against a majority of over 350 MPs,

00:29effectively preventing it from acting.

00:31The institutional stability of our country means that this option should not be pursued.

00:37Left-wing parties have reacted angrily, calling for protests,

00:40while socialist leader Olivier Faure said he would not attend consultations on Tuesday.

00:58Macron called on three of the four parties that make up the New Popular Front

01:08France Unbowed's founder Jean-Luc Mélenchon had earlier said

01:12there could be a left-wing government without ministers from his party,

01:16but this has still been opposed by Macron and centre-right parties.

01:21The country has now been led by a caretaker government for more than 40 days,

01:25a record in post-war France, and the pressure to end the crisis is on.

01:30The deadline to present a draft 2025 budget for the heavily indebted government

01:35is just over a month away.
