Country Liberal Party to form a majority government in Northern Territory

The Northern Territory's incoming Chief Minister will be sworn in, in the coming days, after the resounding victory for the Country Liberal Party in the weekend's election.

00:00Well, the dust is beginning to settle from the Northern Territory's election over the

00:05weekend which saw the country Liberal Party soar to a landslide victory.

00:09They've got at least 16 seats, potentially more, while Labor has been reduced to just

00:14four or five.

00:15Now, the country Liberal Party leader, Lillia Finocchiaro, has wasted no time in getting

00:19to work, meeting with the Police Commissioner Michael Murphy and a senior public servant

00:24to set out her vision for the next four years, which will be sure to be filled with a tough

00:29on crime agenda.

00:30That's the main issue that saw the country Liberal Party really soar to success this

00:34election.

00:35Over the next couple of weeks, she'll be preparing legislation to go for the first

00:38sitting of Parliament, including something called Declan's Law, which is bail reforms

00:42and plans to reverse the age of criminal responsibility back down to 10 years old.

00:47But after that, the Northern Territory does have a lot of really strong, challenging issues

00:52for any government to tackle, including record levels of debt, a stagnating economy and also

00:58challenges with remote education, health and housing.

01:03So it remains to be seen how the CLP will tackle those throughout their four years in

01:08government now.

01:09There are still some seats where we're waiting to see results, for example, Fanny Bay, which

01:14could go to the Greens, potentially, which would give them their first ever seat in the

01:18Northern Territory Parliament.

01:20We have in some places seen something comparable to a teal wave, particularly Justine Davis

01:26is an independent who has won in the Northern Darwin seat of Johnston from Labor, and she's

01:34supported by ACT Senator David Pocock, and will be joining Yingya Gwila in North East

01:39Arnhem Land and Robin Lamley in Central Australia as independents in the Northern Territory

01:44Parliament.

01:45So we're still waiting to see exactly what the results are after the election, but it

01:52so far looks to be a CLP landslide victory, and we know that Labor's been decimated down

01:57to just four or five seats.
