00:06Netflix's biographical drama film Shirley begins with a frame that reads,

00:10For Ian.

00:11He is the late son of Regina King, the lead performer and one of the producers of the

00:15movie.

00:16Ian was born on January 19, 1996, to King and Ian Alexander Sr.

00:20He performed as a musician and DJ under the name DeStun.

00:24He released two singles, Work It Out and A Green Eyes, in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

00:30Ian passed away on January 21, 2022, a month after the movie's filming began.

00:36Ian Alexander Jr. died by suicide at the age of 26.

00:40He was battling depression at the time.

00:42He, Ian, was struggling so much.

00:46We knew.

00:47We knew what we were going through, but he never presented that way, Ian's mother Regina

01:15and her sister Raina King, one of the producers of the film who also plays Shirley's sister

01:19Muriel.

01:20I know Ian would have felt like if I didn't finish something because of a choice that

01:23he needed to make, then I wasn't honoring him.

01:26We all landed at the finish line on Ian's wings.

01:30He guided us there, the actress added about completing the film.

01:33King continues to deal with the grief of losing Ian.

01:37Grief is a journey, you know.

01:39I understand that grief is love that has no place to go.

01:42I know that it's important to me to honor Ian in the totality of who he is, speak about

01:46him in the present, because he is always with me and the joy and happiness that he gave

01:50all of us, the actress said while appearing on E! Good Morning America.

01:54To have to experience this and not be able to have the time to just sit with Ian's choice,

01:58which I respect and understand.

02:00He didn't want to be here anymore, and that's a hard thing for other people to receive because

02:04they did not live our experience, did not live Ian's journey," she added.

02:08King remembered Ian on his birthday on January 19.
