00:00The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH, has reported a significant

00:06reduction in workplace casualties and injuries over the past decade.

00:10The number of occupational fatalities dropped by half, from 4.64 per 100,000 workers in

00:162012 to 2.06 in 2022.

00:20Similarly, the rate of occupational injuries also saw a substantial decline, falling from

00:253.31 per 1,000 workers in 2012 to 2.22 in 2022.

00:32At a ceremony in Bukit Mertajam on Friday, where NIOSH and International Organization

00:36for Standardization, ISO, certificates were awarded to several companies, NIOSH Chairman

00:42Chong Ching Jen attributed the decline not only to stricter workplace policies, but also

00:47to improved collaboration among various sectors in regulating the industry and raising awareness

00:53of workplace safety and health.

00:56Three manufacturing companies, Jabil, AT&S and Ibiden, were recognized for their partnership

01:02with NIOSH in the Safety Passport Programme.

01:05Additionally, Penang Pertsandiran Berhad and University Science Malaysia, USM, received

01:10certificates for their compliance with ISO standards.

01:14Human Resources Minister Stephen Sim Chee Keong, who presented the certificates, noted

01:19that the safety passports ensure that workers possess a recognized level of safety and health

01:24awareness.

01:49Sim also congratulated Penang Port and USM on their progress in ISO certification, highlighting

02:04that this achievement not only enhances workplace safety and health, but also strengthens compliance

02:12with international standards in areas such as management, quality and anti-corruption.
