In a city famous for its diverse food culture, curry has long been a staple of Birmingham's culinary scene. But is it as popular as it once was? I'm here on the streets to ask the public whether curry still holds its place as a favourite, and which local takeaways they recommend.

00:00Curry has deep roots in the West Midlands, with Birmingham often hailed as the birthplace

00:05of the ball tea. This iconic dish, first served in the 1970s, quickly became a local favourite,

00:12symbolising the region's rich cultural tapestry. Over the decades, curry houses have flourished,

00:18offering flavours that reflect the diverse communities of our city. But as times change,

00:24we're exploring whether the love for these dishes has endured, or if the new food trends

00:30are taking their place.

00:32Yeah, I'm a big fan of curries. I remember going to Lady Pool in the early 70s, the first

00:40time that ball teas were out, and they were really, really popular and really cheap. But

00:44now they're everywhere, everywhere you go, even in the outside of Birmingham. Every pub

00:48that shuts turns out to be a curry place, which is good, and they're all got a good

00:52standard. Sometimes it can be too many of them.

00:55I don't really eat around still, you know. I eat at my home, so I really have no idea

01:00of that part.

01:01Unfortunately, I have allergies, so I don't eat curry. I haven't had it for years. But

01:08my boyfriend eats it, and he loves, you know, the spiciest curries, and he's always wanting

01:14a curry, but I'm always like, no, sorry, we can't have it, because I can't have it. So,

01:18yeah.

01:19I do like Indian curries. I do eat them quite often, and I don't think he's too much of

01:24a fan of it. I'm part Sri Lankan and part Caribbean, so he's getting to like the Sri

01:30Lankan curries. It's not Indian, but it's Asian Indian curries. Yeah. And what was the

01:37other question you said?

01:38Are there any takeaways you'd recommend, or do you just kind of stick to the same thing?

01:42Well, I kind of stick to the same thing. I like spicy, so I normally get chicken. I like

01:46chicken, so I normally get chicken vindaloo. I like pilau rice and chapatis, so I kind

01:52of stick to the same. But my daughter, she likes biryani. Biryanis are quite nice. Do

01:55you like biryani? That's biryani.

01:56Yeah, I like biryani.

01:57Biryanis are quite nice, yeah.
