00:00If Emmanuel Macron doesn't want to see the National Assembly deadlocked when it reconvenes,

00:06it's time for a government.

00:08But his way forward is unclear.

00:12He's hoping either that the deadlock will break or that he can at least give the impression

00:16that he isn't the cause of the deadlock, allowing him to appoint a technocrat-led government

00:21or one of national interest in the hope that it holds up.

00:25The left-wing New Popular Front is now the largest political force of the chamber, but

00:30fell short of an absolute majority.

00:33They insist their candidate, Lucie Castille, should be prime minister.

00:36While for the right, an NFP government comprising members of the France Unbowed Party is a red

00:42line.

00:44On the right, although their party was practically eviscerated in July's poll, the Republicans

00:49are nevertheless offering their services.

00:52Not a former coalition, but a so-called legislative pact, hoping to rally just enough lawmakers

00:57from the right and far-right behind a fixed set of policies.

01:01Spending cuts of 25 billion euros, reducing migrants' access to social benefits and the

01:06more nebulous restoring of authority.

01:09After his various meetings, Emmanuel Macron will have to make a choice.

01:13It's been more than six weeks since the elections and no president has ever taken this long

01:17to appoint a prime minister.

01:19But the clock's ticking, with the budget due to reach parliament in early October.
