Indian village celebrates Kamala Harris's roots

00:00This group of villagers have gathered in this temple for a special ritual.

00:04It is for their star Kamala Harris.

00:10We even did puja while she was vying for vice president elections.

00:14We conduct all these things to pray for her because her family is from our village.

00:19We see Kamala Harris as the daughter of the soil.

00:24It was here that her mother Shyamala Gopalan was born.

00:27For the local politician Sudhakar, Harris is on her way to become the most powerful

00:32leader in the world and has made everyone in the village very proud.

00:38We would be proud if any woman would have been running for such an esteemed position.

00:42But as she is from our own village, it's a great pleasure for us.

00:45She's a fighter who worked hard to become a lawyer.

00:48She has overcome all the obstacles and come so far.

00:52The US is a great country in the world.

00:54To be the head of such a country is not a normal thing and it could soon be a girl

00:58from the village.

01:01Political experts say while Harris' potential win would create a positive perception, it

01:06will not lead to any political favours for India.

01:10She becomes the United States president.

01:12That would not really mean anything for India policy-wise.

01:14So it works, as I said, at the level of soft power but not in terms of policy outcomes.

01:20And I think the broad conduits of those foreign policies towards India will not change under

01:25a particular president.

01:27It will only be clear in November if Kamala Harris creates history by becoming the first

01:32woman of colour president of the United States.

01:35But her Indian roots have already stirred a lot of excitement.
