00:00India's medical professionals are on strike.

00:04The Indian Medical Association, the country's largest doctors' union, has called for action across the whole nation

00:12in protest over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor inside a state-run college and hospital in Calcutta.

00:21Only emergency services will continue.

00:24All we are asking for is the justice that is needed for the victim and their family.

00:31We are with them. It has been one week, but no serious investigation has been done into the case.

00:37So some scapegoats have been getting arrested. The original culprits are still out there.

00:44Thousands have also marched across the state of West Bengal and in other cities, including the capital New Delhi.

00:52While marches have been peaceful, a group of men reportedly attacked the hospital where the assault took place.

00:59Doctors say they don't feel safe and have been let down by the government, as does the father of the victim.

01:05Her mother kept calling her continuously, but she was dead by then.

01:10The most painful thing is that from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning, no one cared to ask the whereabouts of an on-duty doctor.

01:17This is hurtful.

01:19Rates of rape are shockingly high in India. In 2022, there were 31,000 reported cases.

01:28Following a gang rape in 2012 and public outrage, the government introduced legal reforms.

01:35But activists say it's not been sufficient.

01:38Rape has become part of the new emerging toxic masculine culture in India.

01:44Because there is impunity again and again for the rapists.

01:49And sometimes not just impunity, but actual protection by government agencies.

01:54And sometimes even rewards and awards.

01:57India's Central Bureau of Investigation is looking into this case.

02:01But doctors say they will not stop the strike until there is a solution.

02:05And for activists like Ruchira, a solution includes an increase in safety measures in the workplace,

02:12higher conviction rates for rapists and broad societal change in rejecting sexual violence.
