Scientists have been able to capture real-time 3D footage of blood flowing through the human body, which could help doctors observe the function of multiple organs at the same time.

00:08body which could help doctors observe the function of multiple organs at the same time
00:12like the heart and the brain.
00:14The new tech called Explorer combines two common scans, positron emission tomography
00:19aka a PET scan and computed tomography better known as a CT scan.
00:24The footage follows the tracer to the heart before flowing to the lungs back through the
00:28left ventricle and then continuing through the body.
00:31Biomedical engineer Professor Jin-Ji Chi from the University of California Davis explains
00:36quote,
00:37We can see global changes with improved image quality at a time scale of 100 milliseconds
00:42which has never been seen before using any medical imaging modalities.
00:46The team says the tracer also contained less radiation than your average PET scan while
00:51also being faster at scanning the body in 3D in one go than machines currently in use
00:56at hospitals.
00:57The researchers hope Explorer will be able to better help diagnose diseases, track how
01:01cancer and infections are spread as well as improve medication.
01:05The findings were published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
