00:29intimidatory batting. The power and the way that he imposed himself on the bowlers was

00:44pretty special actually and yes, extremely intimidating. Very much like Adam Gilchrist,

00:51he led the way, he was innovative, I said he was adaptable, he was resilient, he was

00:56a tough, tough, tough character and nothing fazed him and just to have him out at the top of the

01:04order leading the way, reflecting on it right now, I don't think you could have had a better

01:10opening bat to lead you into two World Cup campaigns as Matthew Hayden.

01:26Matthew Hayden is a very strong player, physically imposing man. He walked down the pitch at the new

01:38ball and smacked it back over the bowler's head, both in Test match cricket and one-day cricket.

01:42If you over-pitched to him, he drove as powerfully and as straight as anybody going around and of

01:49course the great thing was he could drop short and pull the hook.

01:51Straight down the ground, what a way to get up to mark for Matthew Hayden.

01:55Now then, now then, that is big because this is a long straight boundary and Hayden's hit it flat.

02:09When you think of that dominant Australian period, you do almost by definition think of

02:18Warner McGrath and you certainly think of Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist. In 1999, you think of

02:23Steve Waugh. In 2003, you think of Andrew Symonds. I don't think people quite give the credit to

02:30Matthew Hayden that he deserves. Alongside Adam Gilchrist, he formed a fearsome opening partnership.

02:36I'm trying to think, I mean Greenwich and Haynes, I suppose, but I doubt even they caused quite the

02:42chaos that Hayden and Gilchrist caused at times.

02:45Matthew Hayden does it, just short of 50, 47 not out to him. Gilchrist, 59 not out.

02:50Another handsome win for the reigning world champions.

02:54When you look at that team, you had the likes of Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Damian Martin in that team.

03:01You had Matthew Hayden, you had Michael Hussey and sometimes you get that feeling that Matthew Hayden

03:08probably is a little overlooked and not held at the highest level that he should be because

03:14when you look back at it, the way that he opened up for Australia in that particular period,

03:21the opposition teams were feared.

03:23If you're going to be attempting Yorkers to this man, get to the right, otherwise it will disappear.

03:29He was intimidating. I remember him facing Shail Bakhtar.

03:33Shail Bakhtar, steaming in bowling like the wind. He had no qualms in moving down the wicket

03:38to take him on and he was one of the first players to do that again.

03:42I remember him saying, I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it,

03:45I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it.

03:49Moving down the wicket to take him on.

03:51He was one of the first players to do that against Pace.

03:54That just stamped the authority of the Australian innings on the opposition team.

03:59Then you look back at his record.

04:01He's got probably the best record of any Australian batsman on Asian soil.

04:05His adaptability in every condition probably puts him a lot higher than where he's stated at the moment.

04:15He's a lot better batsman than what you remember.

04:19That's clever.

04:21Just using the pace.

04:23It was just the way that he scored the runs as well in that really aggressive, commanding sort of style.

04:29You almost feared for your life as a bowler at times as he came striding up the pitch

04:34and belting it back at you and glaring at you as well.

04:37He really showed that in the 2007 World Cup with the 300s and over 600 runs.

04:42Only the second batsman ever to score over 600 in a World Cup.

04:49I think this is an extraordinarily good innings for Matthew Hayden

04:53and further confirmation of his form.

04:56All-World Cup.

04:58This is an amazing example of how a player can apply himself mentally

05:03to one or two problems he's had in preceding years

05:06and come back even better than he was.

05:09You suspect that the opposition are under pressure as he takes guard.

05:14They're remembering what he has done to you in the past and what he might do to you in the future

05:19and that's a great point from which to start an innings.

05:44Give it all you've got.

05:49Now he goes big again.

05:58The highest score in the World Cup by an Australian.

06:02Wonderful to watch.

06:06So you look at Ricky Ponting, he's just on the same level.

06:08There is no doubt about that.

06:10I hold Matthew Hayden in high regard.

06:14Looking at the final of that 2007 World Cup in Barbados

06:17sometimes you just have to hand it to the opposition

06:20and particularly an individual member of the opposition

06:23if they play an outlandish innings or take an incredible number of wickets.

06:28And Adam Gilchrist that day was unstoppable.

07:16They were possibly the greatest opening pair at the one-day game scene.

07:45Having to go back out and face the Australian spinners in the dark.

07:51And that finally is that.

07:53Australia have won the World Cup of 2007.

07:57Now what matters is a marvellous cricket team

07:59that have outplayed everybody who has come before them.

08:02They have unbeaten 29 World Cup matches.

08:12For the third successive time,

08:14Australia are World Cup champions.

08:18It's hard to see anybody else winning three World Cup titles.

08:21It's hard to see anybody else winning three World Cups in a row.

08:23To see a team pulling so far away

08:25that they can win for eight years,

08:27Australia did.
