00:00This is the 10-acre durian farm in Rauh, Pahang, owned by Edwin Chiang and his family.

00:16It is one of the 40-plus orchards in the area.

00:19Chiang and his fellow farmers have witnessed significant growth in the durian industry

00:23over the years, with the export value of Malaysian durians reaching 1.23 billion ringgit in

00:292022.

00:30Chiang, who is also the Secretary-General of the Malaysia International Durian Industry

00:36Development Association, said he especially looks forward to expanding his market in China

00:42with the export of fresh durians.

00:45Malaysia was previously allowed to ship only durian products and frozen whole durians to

00:49China.

00:50However, on July 19th, Beijing and Putrajaya agreed to allow for fresh durians to be exported

00:56from Malaysia to China.

00:58For this industry, no matter what kind of business it is, as long as we have a choice,

01:04we have a way to make a profit.

01:08Previously, there was only one type of frozen durian, but now we have a new type of fresh

01:12durian.

01:13From a customer's point of view, it is a good choice.

01:17But that does not mean Malaysians would have to worry about a potential short supply of

01:21durians.

01:22Chiang assures Malaysians that there would be a sufficient supply in the local market.

01:28We are currently trying to reach the A-level fruit, or the fruit that needs to be exported.

01:34Because there are many other varieties in Malaysia, we only have one type of durian in China.

01:40So basically, if we can't find durian in China, then we have other choices, such as

01:44zhu jiao, qing pi, er shi si, x-o.

01:49Meanwhile, Sabah Durian and Tropical Fruit Planters Association said the new deal will

01:54enhance Malaysia's competitiveness in the global durian market.

01:59Its chairman, Dwayne Evans, who has a 45-acre durian and avocado farm in Sabah, believed

02:05that Malaysia's success depends entirely on its first few shipments to China.

02:10The fresh durians will be transported via air freight, which can be costly.

02:14We shall see if the Chinese consumers find the price and the quality of the fruit acceptable.
