People still trying to enjoy a day on Myrtle Beach as Debby approaches

AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported live from a blustery Myrtle Beach on the afternoon of Aug. 7 as some people tried to make the most of a day on the beach despite the deteriorating weather.

00:00Our team coverage begins this afternoon with AccuWeather meteorologist and storm chaser Tony Laubach.

00:04Tony, yesterday we had a landfalling water spout that was fascinating to track.

00:09What are we dealing with right now? It's a lot more intense than it was yesterday behind you.

00:18Well, it certainly looks that way, Jeff, but I've got to say it's actually been a beachy day for a lot of folks.

00:24We've been kind of coasting up and down here from Myrtle Beach down toward the Georgetown area

00:29and just kind of getting a feel, a lay of the land here, what people are expecting here

00:33as we are expecting Debbie to work its way in later tonight.

00:37So we've been kind of just out on the beach, but it has been breezy, blustery, if you will, across the beaches here.

00:44We'll show you some of that video because it's not been the most pleasant.

00:46Only the diehards are really getting out to enjoy the beachy, windy weather.

00:52And that wind does certainly bring in the waves a little bit, certainly blows some of the sand around.

00:56But it does offer some windy kind of sports. We saw some people out there on boards,

01:01skimming, doing some wave whiting. Wave whiting? I'm not even going to try anymore.

01:07And then some parasailing as well. Talked to a lot of the residents, a lot of the visitors out here as well,

01:12and they said despite Debbie's arrival, they're not going to let it stop their vacations.

01:17We made the decision not to leave and just stick it out.

01:21I keep praying that I will not be as strong as air dissipating, enjoying the weather as best I can.

01:27My husband is currently in the water with my 8-year-old daughter throwing his casting net.

01:32They've been coming down here for over 13 years each year, and this is the first year we've ever had a storm like this.

01:38So it's a unique vacation.

01:44Now to kind of talk about my luck there, and I apologize for the sound, because when I handed her the mic,

01:48I had one of those little fuzzy things that you put on it to keep the windbreaker out,

01:51and the wind actually took that away. I have no idea where that's at.

01:54So folks, based on the wind direction, if you are in far northern South Carolina or south-central North Carolina,

02:00please keep an eye out for that. You can send that back to me in Colorado.

02:03But meanwhile, still folks here on the beach. We've got the winds blowing.

02:06Still coming in. Every now and again, we get kind of a squall that rolls through.

02:10About 20 minutes ago, we had some wind-driven rain that rolled through, chased a few folks off the beach.

02:15Really, behind me, you're seeing just a handful of folks.

02:18We're seeing some folks playing frisbee, standing here in the warm waters,

02:22which, again, is one of those fuels for the tropical storms.

02:25But certainly something we're going to see deteriorating conditions, especially as we get into the evening,

02:29especially from here in points south where we're expecting landfall.

02:32And again, as you mentioned here, those effects spread far, as we've had even the tornadic threat

02:37all the way up into North Carolina with some of those heavier bands.

02:40So certainly it's going to be nice while it is.

02:43And hopefully Debbie gets in, does her thing, and gets out with minimal impacts here, Jeff.

02:48All right. We appreciate the report there, Tony. Good stuff.

02:51But hopefully the odds of finding that windsock are going to be very, very—the windscreen—very slim.
