NT Police apologises to Indigenous communities for injustices

The NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy has apologised for injustices and harm inflicted on the Indigenous community by police over the past 150 years.

00:00I'm deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians for the past harms and injustices caused by

00:15members of the Northern Territory Police.

00:17I know that I cannot change or undo the past, but as a Police Commissioner, alongside with

00:24our Police Officers, we can commit to not repeat mistakes and injustices of the past.

00:43It's not just the racism that people may say that they face when they deal with Police

00:50Forces, the Police Officers on the street, it will also be looking at policies, legislation.

01:06Would you encourage other Police Commissioners to do this?

01:08One of the things, well it's up to them, but in general it's a good idea to acknowledge

01:14history and to acknowledge that why we are here today is because of that history.
