Hi kids, today we will learn how to round the decimal numbers to their nearest whole numbers.
00:08
So let's start.
00:11
Here we have a decimal number.
00:14
It is 5.6.
00:17
What does it mean?
00:20
It means 5 and .6.
00:24
That is, it has a whole number and a decimal number portion.
00:29
And it is somewhere between 5 and 6.
00:35
And if we have to round it to the nearest whole number, there are two options.
00:42
Either round it down to 5 and remove the decimal portion,
00:48
or round it up to the next whole number, which is 6.
00:54
And the rule is, if the decimal portion is .5 or more than .5,
01:02
that is, if the decimal number is more than a half, we round it up.
01:09
And it means the number is more close to the next whole number.
01:15
And if the decimal portion is less than .5, we round it down,
01:22
as it means the decimal portion is less than a half or more close to the previous whole number.
01:31
And in this case, .6 is more than .5.
01:36
So we will round it up to the next whole number, that is, 6.
01:44
Now let's see more examples.
01:47
Now the next number we have to round off to nearest whole number is 3.4.
01:55
What does it mean?
01:57
It means 3 and .4.
02:01
That is, it has a whole number and a decimal number portion.
02:07
And it is somewhere between 3 and 4.
02:11
And if we have to round it to the nearest whole number, there are two options.
02:17
Either round it down to 3 and remove the decimal portion,
02:22
or round it up to the next whole number, which is 4.
02:27
And the rule is, if the decimal portion is .5 or more than .5,
02:34
that is, if the decimal number is more than a half, we round it up.
02:42
It means the number is more close to the next whole number.
02:47
And if it's less than 5, we round it down,
02:51
as it means the number is more close to previous whole number.
02:57
And in this case, .4 is less than .5.
03:03
So, we will round it down to previous whole number, that is, 3.
03:10
Now let's take another example.
03:14
Here we have number 25.50.
03:19
That means this number is between 25 and 26.
03:25
And it can be either rounded down to 25 or rounded up to 26.
03:32
And all depends on decimal number portion, which is 0.50 here.
03:40
And we learned, rule is, if decimal portion is .5 or more, the number is rounded up.
03:49
And if the decimal number is less than .5, we round it down.
03:55
And here the decimal portion is .50.
04:01
.50 equals .5, as .5 and .50 is one and the same,
04:10
as zeros in the rightmost places of decimal numbers does not matter.
04:17
So this number will be rounded up to 26.
04:21
Now let's learn another example.
04:24
Now we have a number, 65.03.
04:29
We know this number is somewhere between 65 and 66.
04:36
And it can be either rounded down to 65 or rounded up to 66.
04:43
For that we have to see the decimal portion, which is .03.
04:50
And if it's less than .5, it will be rounded down.
04:55
And if more than .5 or .5, round it up.
05:02
.03 is less than .50.
05:08
So the number will be rounded down to 65.
05:12
Now let's take another example.
05:15
Now we have number 70.004.
05:21
We know this number is somewhere between 70 and 71.
05:26
It can be either rounded down to 70 or rounded up to 71.
05:33
For that we have to see the decimal portion, which is .004.
05:41
And if it's less than .5, it will be rounded down, else round it up.
05:48
Kids, .5, .50, and .500 are one and the same thing.
05:58
Now we can clearly see that .004 is less than .500.
06:06
So the number will be rounded down to 70.
06:12
So kids, now we know how to round the decimal numbers to the nearest whole numbers.
06:19
Let's round off some decimal numbers quickly now.
06:24
4.78, it lies between 4 and 5.
06:30
.78 is bigger than .50, so it will be rounded up to 5.
06:39
9.31, it lies between 9 and 10.
06:45
.31 is less than .50, so it will be rounded down to 9.
06:54
1.96, it lies between 1 and 2.
07:00
.96 is bigger than .50, so it will be rounded up to 2.
07:09
So kids, today we learned how to round off decimal numbers to the nearest whole numbers.
07:16
Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
07:20
Bye-bye!
