00:00:00Can you say hard hats, folks? Hard hats, much pale steel to a boots.
00:00:07Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:09Look at this boomer right here.
00:00:11You've just got so much talent here.
00:00:14Somebody said we need to apologize for Jalen.
00:00:16Can I pull the John? What are we apologizing for? What did we say? What did we do?
00:00:30Hey, Bobby Manning here. Welcome to an off-season edition of the Garden Report.
00:00:35Most of the crew is here.
00:00:37This is my personal portion of the program, okay?
00:00:40It's okay, Sherrod. You can wear it.
00:00:44Has that been by your side all summer, Sherrod?
00:00:46It has literally been right here all summer. Right next to me.
00:00:52Just like the trophy. Tatum and the trophy.
00:00:54Yeah, he's taking his thing everywhere.
00:00:57Josue Pavone, welcome back.
00:00:59It's been a minute since we've talked to you.
00:01:01I know. What's going on?
00:01:03Sherrod Blakely and I am Bobby Manning.
00:01:06We're going to mostly talk Olympics here today.
00:01:08There's a couple of news items bouncing around.
00:01:10Maybe we'll talk a little summer league toward the end, but we've been there.
00:01:13We've done that.
00:01:15And I'm getting ready for these Olympics, which look like they're going to be fun.
00:01:18Look like they're going to be competitive based off the exhibition slate we watched over the last month here.
00:01:25It got going with the opening ceremony last night.
00:01:27A couple of games in the books.
00:01:29I think Australia beat Spain.
00:01:31There was another game earlier today, too, I think.
00:01:33I haven't watched any of them yet.
00:01:35We'll get to – was it Greece and Brazil today, Sherrod?
00:01:38Yeah.
00:01:40So that's coming up.
00:01:42And the U.S. starts tomorrow at 11.15 against Serbia.
00:01:46They destroyed Serbia in the exhibitions.
00:01:50Jokic really struggled in that game.
00:01:53But he's obviously one of the best players they'll see during this stretch here.
00:01:56And let's face it, guys, U.S., if they win, it's going to be – all right, they won.
00:02:03If they lose, it's going to be an uproar no matter how it happens here.
00:02:07And they're in group play, so they can afford probably one loss here in this stretch of games to start.
00:02:12But it's going to be Serbia.
00:02:13It's going to be South Sudan, who pushed them pretty hard during the exhibitions.
00:02:16And Puerto Rico they'll see as well, who they did not play during the exhibition stretch.
00:02:21So this team stacks, Sherrod.
00:02:23Sounds like Kevin Durant might come back here, add to it.
00:02:27And you've got LeBron being LeBron.
00:02:29He was amazing in those exhibitions.
00:02:31And Bede has been a little clunky, but they've got a ton of depth at center.
00:02:35And when you have Steph Curry, Drew Holiday, Derek White at guard, Anthony Edwards, ate him off the bench.
00:02:44I'm not saying this is a dream team level roster here,
00:02:47but this is definitely one of the three or four best rosters they've had.
00:02:50And their Olympic history.
00:02:53I'm going to hold off on putting them on the Mount Rushmore of great Team USA's just yet,
00:03:00because they literally haven't won anything of significance yet.
00:03:03I think on paper, Bobby, you're right.
00:03:05I think this team is that good and should be talked about with that type of reverence going forward.
00:03:11But they haven't done anything yet.
00:03:13The fact that the highest paid player in NBA history is coming off your bench.
00:03:17And Jason Tatum says a lot about your death.
00:03:20But I'm not quite sold on this team yet.
00:03:24I think that they are like a lot of super, you know,
00:03:28superpower type teams where the better the opponent, the better they play.
00:03:33I mean, they had that nail biter against South Sudan, but they beat the snot out of Serbia, which is a better team.
00:03:39I expect the Serbian game to be a little bit closer.
00:03:43And if they play South Sudan again, which because in their pool play they like, they will do that.
00:03:48They're going to destroy them.
00:03:50They are going to beat them by at least 30.
00:03:52I'm just going to put that out there right now.
00:03:55And that's how it should be.
00:03:57But I'm not quite ready to crown them yet.
00:04:01They haven't done anything yet.
00:04:03And they should be again.
00:04:04They should be the last team standing with all said and done.
00:04:08The South Sudan game, you know, the other close call they had gave me reason to just kind of hit the pause button on just elevating them to top tier all time great status.
00:04:19Yeah, I'm with you, Sharad.
00:04:21Definitely.
00:04:22I just feel like the other teams are going to look at that and say, wait, we can we can beat this team.
00:04:26You know, I mean, I think it's shown that they're vulnerable for sure, even though they did bounce back with that humongous win against Serbia.
00:04:31I feel like a lot of the other teams can can look for those moments of vulnerability.
00:04:35You know, and sometimes they do.
00:04:37I don't want to say play down to their competition because we haven't seen a whole lot of like it hasn't been that many games to like characterize them that way.
00:04:44But I just feel like in this type of competitive nature, this kind of this type of Olympic, you know, just the fact that these teams have a chance to like you said, Bobby, at the top, like if they lose, it's like the end of the world.
00:04:56You know, if they win, it's like, oh, yeah, you're supposed to do that.
00:04:59So every team's out there wanting to be that team.
00:05:01You know, even a team like Puerto Rico, you know, like teams that have come a long way from being taken more seriously, I guess, in these type of competitive tournaments.
00:05:09You know, those are the teams that I wonder if they'll get the best out of the U.S.
00:05:14U.S.A. team, you know. But again, yeah, you know, I'm with Sharad.
00:05:17You know, we have to wait and see how they how this whole thing plays out before you crown them as one of the better teams on paper.
00:05:22They look incredible. You know, obviously, a lot of these guys are future Hall of Famers and a lot of them are over 30 experience.
00:05:30But we have to wait and see how they how it all plays out.
00:05:32And I can't wait. I think it's going to be a really competitive, competitive Olympics.
00:05:36Who would you start now? They've started everybody at this point so far.
00:05:41And it feels like they're still searching a little bit for who that starting five is going to be.
00:05:46Yeah, I mean, I guess I would first say I think the starting lineup doesn't matter as much as I guess we're making it out to be.
00:05:52At the end of the day, it's more about what combinations they're wearing with and who they're closing with.
00:05:56And I feel like that closing group is probably not going to be the same as that starting group.
00:06:00But I don't like the kind of multiple guys that are not used to being role players sharing the floor together,
00:06:07like having guys like Anthony Edwards and Devin Booker and guys that primarily have been scorers in their career sharing the floor together.
00:06:14So those are the combinations I feel like we've seen too much of where there's not those connected pieces on the floor alongside the stars.
00:06:24Noah's low on Edwards. I can just hassle with this team.
00:06:28I know, I can't stop. It's not that I'm low on him in general. I guess I'm a little lower than the average person, which is very, very high.
00:06:36But I just think on this type of roster, like what he brings is scoring. Right.
00:06:41And there's other scorers as well that are going to be as effective or if not more effective than him.
00:06:46And I just don't view him doing the other little things that other players on the court have a long history of doing.
00:06:52That's my that's my qualm. But I like through holidays a starter. I think you have to start LeBron.
00:06:57I would start Anthony Davis. I think he's been probably the best player through the exhibition games.
00:07:03I don't really feel strongly about the other two. I mean, I guess you have to start Curry.
00:07:06So there's like one open spot. I think those four and you have to start.
00:07:10I was going to say, I think we pretty much figured it out. There you go.
00:07:13There's your starting five. There you go. Missing one.
00:07:16Durant. Yeah. I mean, not if he hasn't played in a while, though.
00:07:21I would imagine that if he's going to get eased back into it, he'll come off the bench the first game.
00:07:25I don't know. But this is the difficult thing here with this team.
00:07:28Sure, because you do have some guys who whose games are a little more oriented toward isolation play or being the guy.
00:07:35Edwards, certainly. And B, I think, has struggled with that a little bit so far.
00:07:39And then you have a bunch of complementary guys who might not be the ones with major cache or status.
00:07:44And honestly, all three Celtics, I think you can point to in that sense, even with Tatum just winning the championship
00:07:50and making his mark in the league over the last couple of years.
00:07:53It feels like he's kind of been pushed to the side here in many ways in favor of LeBron Curry Durant.
00:08:00To me, I see LeBron holding the flag. You see who started for this team so far.
00:08:05I guess a beat has earned a little bit of status over Davis, who would probably have more cache with this team.
00:08:12But it's the older guys. It's the ones who have been around this USA program for a little bit.
00:08:17We can go back to the whole Jalen thing and talk about that a little bit.
00:08:20But this is about the guys who have been in the NBA, who have been the faces of basketball.
00:08:27It's the LeBron show. It's the Curry show.
00:08:30And B, I think you could probably move out of that lineup if you really need to here.
00:08:34But there's going to be a tough one for Steve Kershaw because there's just so many personalities here.
00:08:39There's so many superstars. And this is the challenge or I guess the good problem to have with a team like this is
00:08:46you have the best talent in this field by far, but you have to manage it.
00:08:50And so far, even though they haven't lost, they've struggled a little bit to manage how much talent is here on this roster
00:08:56and how many different types of players they have.
00:09:02Oh, you're on mute. Sure.
00:09:03You're on mute.
00:09:04There we go.
00:09:05Steve Kerr should be the ideal coach to handle a situation like this.
00:09:09When you look at the types of talent that he has not only coached, but that he's won at the highest level with.
00:09:14And so I think he's going to figure out how to manage it effectively.
00:09:18But if you're when you look at Tatum and some of the younger guys on his team, it's kind of like, you know,
00:09:24when that varsity team comes together and you've got like the two year starter and then you've got the first year starter,
00:09:29they may all be on the same team and they may all have a similar status.
00:09:33But there is a very clear and undeniable difference between the one who's been there, done that,
00:09:38and has done it as the kind of the face or front of the group versus a guy who's probably going to be in that role at some point,
00:09:46but maybe not quite there yet. And if you're Jason Tatum and if we're really being honest and candid about this,
00:09:52he's cool just going on for on a ride. He's got a championship.
00:09:56He's going to make more money than anyone in NBA history.
00:09:59If you're telling me that I need to take a backseat to Kevin Durant, OK, I'm cool with that,
00:10:05because I got the one thing that I have. Everyone said I couldn't get is the championship.
00:10:11And so I think he's OK. Drew Holiday has shown that he's he's a blue guy that every team needs.
00:10:17And the team you see is no different. And Derek White is in many ways kind of like Drew Holiday 2.0,
00:10:24a similar player in terms of the intangibles that he brings to the game.
00:10:28And so I think whoever they go with, the Celtics contingent is cool for whatever role they're going to be asked to play because they don't have anything to prove.
00:10:38I think Anthony Edwards clearly has something to prove in this.
00:10:41I think some of those younger guys, this is their opportunity to show themselves as being more than just a pretty good NBA player.
00:10:47They want to be an Olympian. It gives them a certain status that they don't have
00:10:51and that they have not been able to establish in the NBA.
00:10:54And Noah, I love you, but I got to push back on the Edwards.
00:11:00Oh, no. You were the most polarizing guy. Yeah, it's not just you.
00:11:06No, he's not polarizing. Everybody loves him except for me.
00:11:09What do you feel about him and how I feel about Devin Booker?
00:11:12And the reason why I don't I can't get down with Devin Booker is because he doesn't play defense.
00:11:18He's not even trying to. At least with Anthony Edwards, he tries to play defense.
00:11:24And Anthony Edwards, he tosses a lot of trash. I'm OK with that.
00:11:28Most of the time, he can back it up. When he does it, you flame him for it.
00:11:32And he takes those hits like a true competitor would.
00:11:36Devin Booker, he doesn't take those hits because he doesn't get he's literally nowhere to be found defensively.
00:11:41So it's not even you can't even like criticize him heavily for that because he doesn't even play.
00:11:46He doesn't even give you enough effort to criticize him about it.
00:11:49It's incomplete. It's an incomplete charade. Yeah.
00:11:53I don't know how much you're going to see him. What's that?
00:11:57I don't know how much we're going to. I mean, some of these guys are going to have to sit down, too, which is.
00:12:00Oh, I hope he's one that's quite a bit. Yeah, I don't want to see Devin Booker out.
00:12:06He's the one guy of all the people that, you know, you can point to and say, man, could Jalen be in that guy's spot?
00:12:13He's the one guy that I would have I would have had in there instead of Jalen I would have in there instead of Devin Booker.
00:12:19I was just going to bring up Jalen. I know, obviously.
00:12:24They need Edwards just because he's been the guy who's been able to just put his head downhill and score when they need to.
00:12:30LeBron's done that late in the games.
00:12:32But that's that Jalen role that we saw with the Celtics just ways when they really need a basket,
00:12:38when they need someone to break an offensive slump or whatever they're going through in the half court.
00:12:42He's been able to do that a couple of buzzer beaters at the end of quarters, just aggressive plays.
00:12:47And it might lead to some isolation.
00:12:50Heavy offense might lead to some stagnancy at times, but more than anyone else in this roster,
00:12:55he's just been able to put the ball in the basket at times here.
00:12:58And I wouldn't put him in the starting lineup, but off the bench with Bam and Davis,
00:13:03that combo that's been so dominant and a point guard out there, could that be Derek White?
00:13:09I saw it against, I think it was South Sudan late in that game.
00:13:13They need Edwards here for better or for worse, I think.
00:13:17For better, Bobby, for better.
00:13:20Well, when you put him in with those lineups, though, that's a great balance, especially with someone like Bam out of Bayou.
00:13:24You know, guys like Anthony Davis, like they're a matchup nightmare for a lot of these teams.
00:13:29So I think that's where you're able to see him shine, especially scoring in transition.
00:13:33But yeah, I mean, at the end of games, I wonder if that's something that...
00:13:36Is he out there for the end of games?
00:13:38Is that someone Steve Kerr going to turn to?
00:13:41Maybe he's looking for some consistency on offense and you put him in for a few plays and see what happens.
00:13:46Yeah, I could see that.
00:13:47But, you know, I just think it's going to come down to the defense at the end of those games.
00:13:53And if he's hot, though, it'll be hard for Kerr not to keep him in there.
00:13:59So you wonder how long he stretches that at the very end of games.
00:14:04We'll find out.
00:14:06And if you're in a late game situation where you need your best defensive unit out there, he's a consideration.
00:14:13There's no doubt about that.
00:14:15Drew Holley in that situation is a lock to be out there because you don't have a better perimeter defender than him.
00:14:20I would even go with Derek White, too, if we really need to get stops and get out and set our offense.
00:14:27Down by six. Yeah, something like that.
00:14:29Yeah, put D. White in there.
00:14:31I mean, if we need if we need to get a stop and they got a perimeter guy that's hot,
00:14:34why would we not have the best shot blocking guard in the NBA out there on the floor?
00:14:38And he was amazing.
00:14:40So he amazed me in the scrimmages, for sure.
00:14:43Which could that lead to a role for him?
00:14:45I thought he was going to be a guy who just come down and sit for this roster, be happy to take the backseat to the other stars here.
00:14:52But they needed him in that South Sudan game.
00:14:55And he was great.
00:14:58You have to be more than just eat croissants, Derek White.
00:15:01I thought that was what you were doing.
00:15:03You're right, Bobby.
00:15:05You need more.
00:15:06Even as one of his biggest relievers, he surprised me out there.
00:15:09I want to take a quick break to shout out Game Time.
00:15:12I can see Derek White being a huge croissant lover.
00:15:14I can see that.
00:15:16Oh, absolutely.
00:15:18This is pretty cool, the role he gets to have with this team.
00:15:21I want to get to that.
00:15:22I want to get to Tatum as well as Holliday's role with this team.
00:15:25But first, shout out to Game Time.
00:15:27Our official ticket partner here at CLNS Media for the summer.
00:15:31In the summer, it might not be NBA games or hockey games.

00:17:18So, Noah mentioned it.
00:17:19Holiday's probably going to be a starter with this team.
00:17:23He's been that connective, important, a glue guy for this group.
00:17:27I'm interested in seeing what Tatum's role is.
00:17:30And White's just going to do what they need him to do, obviously, here.
00:17:33But Tatum, I feel like we're asking the same questions about him we asked the whole playoff run.
00:17:39He's been effective.
00:17:41He hasn't shot well at all.
00:17:43And he hasn't taken many threes during this stretch.
00:17:46And I don't know exactly, night-to-night, what his role is with this team.
00:17:51He could be a starter.
00:17:53He could come off the bench.
00:17:55He'll probably come off the bench if Durant's a starter.
00:17:58And off that bench, as we mentioned, is it Edwards?
00:18:01Is it White, Halliburton, handling the ball?
00:18:04You've got those two bigs, so he's kind of at that wing spot.
00:18:08So far, Noah, I've mostly just watched Jason standing in the corner.
00:18:13And I think he's more than happy to do that.
00:18:16I think he's been stressing sacrifice with this team, just like he was with the Celtics.
00:18:21But I'm waiting for the game where he really makes his imprint on things.
00:18:25And maybe that's just beyond what his mindset is at this point.
00:18:29And he just wants to pass and play defense and do all these different things.
00:18:32And he's been effective doing that.
00:18:34But here we are again. Where's Tatum's shot? What's his role?
00:18:39Can he take over and dominate?
00:18:41It's like we're asking the same questions we did with the Celtics.
00:18:44And similar to the Celtics, this USA team, if they can all figure out their roles,
00:18:48probably looks like they're going to dominate.
00:18:52Yeah, I think with Tatum, the question for me is if he's going to be able to impact the game enough
00:19:03to warrant being one of the five guys that's down the stretch on the court,
00:19:06because this is such a stacked roster that you don't actually need him to be one of those guys.
00:19:11There's a good chance that he might not be one of the players that has to be in that spot,
00:19:15particularly with LeBron's playing the way that he played during the exhibition games,
00:19:18which personally, I was a little surprised to see just how effective he was.
00:19:22And if he's able to keep that up, I think he kind of has that spot and role solidified.
00:19:27But what I did like out of Jason Tatum in the exhibition games is that
00:19:30when he was attacking the basket, he was doing so really effectively in a way where
00:19:34I think he was not able to do that during the regular season and during the playoff run with the Celtics
00:19:39because he has one guy covering him.
00:19:41And so he has flashes of like, if he could just keep doing this and driving to the rim
00:19:46and putting pressure on and throwing good passes out of drives.
00:19:50And I thought that he had those moments, but like a Tatum three-pointer with a hand in your face
00:19:55on Team USA should really never happen.
00:19:57Like that's a bad shot on the Celtics.
00:19:59And that's an even worse shot on Team USA with the amount of options and talent that you have.
00:20:03So my thinking is just like, you just don't need him to do that.
00:20:07That's not his strength.
00:20:08Even though he's had times in his career where he's been a really good shooter,
00:20:12at the end of the day, like he's not a sharpshooter.
00:20:14Like that's not his thing.
00:20:15And you have so much going on in his roster that I don't think you need to see those kinds of shots.
00:20:18So I'm less concerned about like, can he shoot out of his funk the way that maybe he will say
00:20:23in a few months, like he'll probably need to figure that out during the regular season.
00:20:26And more with like, is he going to be able to continue doing the things that he's uniquely good at
00:20:31and not force the issue?
00:20:32Because you don't need anybody like trying to find a rhythm.
00:20:35And maybe Seth Curry.
00:20:36Maybe Seth Curry has earned the right to go one for seven from three,
00:20:39but that's pretty much it.
00:20:40You don't really need that on this roster.
00:20:43I think Tatum is, well, first of all, Bobby, to your point, him staying in the corner,
00:20:49it's very, he's being Jalen Brown slash Marcus Smarted at that point.
00:20:55That's kind of what, that's kind of what those guys were doing.
00:20:59So Tatum is now on the receiving end of that, that treatment, it seems like now.
00:21:03But I think the biggest issue for Tatum at this point is motivation.
00:21:08I mean, what is really driving you to be great now?
00:21:13When you know that at the end of the day, you don't need to be great in order to achieve your goal.
00:21:19He might need a little break after his run.
00:21:22And I think part of it, I think Tatum low key is thinking, you know what?
00:21:26We want to win another chip.
00:21:28And I kind of committed to this Olympic thing and I want to be here and I'm going to be engaged,
00:21:33but they don't really need me to go hard.
00:21:35I mean, they don't really need me to be great.
00:21:37They need me to be solid in whatever role they ask me to play.
00:21:40And as we've all pointed out, the roles of all these guys is evolving.
00:21:44No one really has a clear defined role.
00:21:47And to Noah's point about LeBron, I think LeBron did what old men tend to do when you play with a lot of younger men.
00:21:53Son, this is how you're supposed to play the game.
00:21:56I've showed you how to play the game.
00:21:58Now you go ahead and do it.
00:22:00We're not going to see the LeBron that we saw in exhibition games now that this stuff is real,
00:22:05because LeBron is like the level that you need to play with, the effort that you need to give.
00:22:09I've shown you what that looks like in this environment.
00:22:13It's your turn, Drew Holiday.
00:22:15It's your turn, Anthony Edwards.
00:22:17It's your turn, Devin Booker.
00:22:18Okay, maybe not Devin Booker.
00:22:19It's your turn, all you other guys, to go out and do that.
00:22:22So much Devin Booker shade.
00:22:23I've given you the blueprint.
00:22:25I've given you the cheat code.
00:22:26And Tatum, again, back to Tatum, he's good.
00:22:30I mean, Tatum is the one guy who literally has nothing to prove to any of these other guys,
00:22:36because all of them are playing for one thing, and that's an NBA championship.
00:22:41And last time I checked, there's only three guys on that team that can say that we are the champions today.
00:22:47And Tatum, Drew Holiday, Derek White.
00:22:50The rest, you've had your moments, but you're not that dude or that player now.
00:22:55Your team certainly isn't that team now.
00:22:57So I think Tatum, the biggest challenge he's going to have is just being motivated to be great,
00:23:01because they don't need that from him.
00:23:03And to be honest with you, I like the role that Tatum is in now,
00:23:06where he's just giving you a little bit of something to remind you he's a great player,
00:23:10but certainly is not overexerting himself and making it seem like I'm trying.
00:23:15This isn't like Tatum from a couple of years ago, where he's trying to prove, you know, I'm really good.
00:23:18I'm really, really good.
00:23:20We know that.
00:23:21We know that.
00:23:22And we know that you can win at the highest level.
00:23:24Now it's just to stay healthy, get your gold medal, and come back and try to run it back again.
00:23:30Right.
00:23:31So Sherbock, I would say to that.
00:23:33Oh, go ahead, Josue.
00:23:34Oh, no, I was just going to say real quick.
00:23:35It's like he's the ultimate decoy until he's not,
00:23:38because I do think he's going to have one of those games where he comes in off the bench, second half,
00:23:43maybe gives you like 10 straight points or something like that, you know,
00:23:46and then we're going to be reminded of how good he is.
00:23:48But, yeah, I'm with you, Sherrod.
00:23:49I mean, he's solidified.
00:23:51Yeah, yeah, go back to the bench.
00:23:53But he's solidified.
00:23:54These guys know who he is.
00:23:55You know, it's not like the last time these guys got together, you know,
00:23:59and remember when Durant sort of like passed him the torch, you know,
00:24:02and be like, oh, this guy's up next.
00:24:03You know, like he knows there's plenty of Olympics in the future coming up, you know.
00:24:07Like this is kind of like maybe the last one for some of these guys.
00:24:09And I think he understands exactly what his role is on this team,
00:24:14especially coming off the championship.
00:24:15And I'm sure he's been reminding everyone, you know,
00:24:17with the whole champ stuff and all those videos about when LeBron was like,
00:24:21oh, is that why you dunked on me?
00:24:22Because I didn't give you an autograph when you were 10.
00:24:24Like, I love that stuff, man.
00:24:25Yeah, it's real.
00:24:26And like that's a really cool, obviously a cool experience for everyone.
00:24:30But if you're Jason Tatum, what a hell of a summer you're having right now.
00:24:33So, again, I do think we'll get at least one of those games where you're like,
00:24:36okay, there's a Tatum game coming off the bench.
00:24:38But for the most part, he's going to thrive in this role,
00:24:41but he's going to do it in a way that it's not going to be as flashy as some
00:24:44people might have expected going into this.
00:24:46What were you going to say, Noah?
00:24:48No, I was going to say, I feel like, no, no, you're good.
00:24:51I feel like my issue with the whole Olympic discourse is that I don't think
00:24:55anybody needs to show right now that they're great.
00:24:58Like that's not what the Olympics are about.
00:25:01This is like the one time where the reason the U.S. looks so vulnerable
00:25:05against teams that they should not is because you have guys with that same
00:25:09instinct that they have during the regular season as their stars on their team
00:25:13of being like, look, I'm the number one guy.
00:25:15Like, look, I can go create my own shot.
00:25:17And it's like Team USA should be getting layups and open three-pointers.
00:25:20Like that's what they should be getting because they have so much talent on this
00:25:23team, but that would also mean that none of you guys get your highlights and
00:25:26none of you guys get your step back like crazy shots that you hit during the
00:25:29regular season.
00:25:30When you watch the women's team USA, I don't know if any of you guys have
00:25:33tuned in, but they're way better than the field and they're playing like it
00:25:37because they find, you know, in their one exhibition game that they had,
00:25:40they literally, every shot that they had was an open layup or an open
00:25:43three-pointer and they made them and they won by a lot.
00:25:45And so to me, it's like, I don't mind if Tatum scores four points a game
00:25:49and probably will have to have the discourse of, oh, Tatum's not the face
00:25:53of the NBA.
00:25:54And they had four points a game in the Olympic run if he's actually creating
00:25:57easy shots for players.
00:25:59And that's why I was so high on how Derek White looked for South Sudan
00:26:02because the whole game he was just getting people layups.
00:26:05And his box score was 1.45 assists.
00:26:08Nobody's going to be writing home about it.
00:26:11But his mindset was, I have like four stars on the team with me.
00:26:14I'm going to get them easy shots.
00:26:16And I don't see enough guys so far on Team USA being like, I have four
00:26:19superstars on this team.
00:26:21Let me get them an easy shot.
00:26:22Instead, it's like you see guys being like, let me get in my bag that's made
00:26:25me a Hall of Famer.
00:26:27And Tatum's not really going to be one of those guys, I don't think,
00:26:30because he actually has a lot of practice of not doing that because he was just
00:26:33on a team that won a championship without mentality.
00:26:36But a guy like Seth Curry, one of my favorite players of all time,
00:26:39this is an adjustment for him because when has he ever been in this position
00:26:43where he doesn't need to be taking crazy shots and he doesn't need to be
00:26:47kind of carrying the entire offense the way that he has,
00:26:50especially in the last couple of years.
00:26:52And so that's my thinking.
00:26:53I just feel like the discourse around is Tatum going to assert himself is kind
00:26:56of the reverse of where I would view it, whereas it's like,
00:26:59I think nobody should be playing with that intention.
00:27:03But it's not going to happen because the guys are on that roster.
00:27:07When they've run, when they get out on the run, that's what they look like.
00:27:12It's unstoppable.
00:27:13And they've gone on some 22-2 runs and just game-changing kind of quarters,
00:27:20couple-minute stretches where they look like that kind of team.
00:27:23But in the half court, when they have to run stuff,
00:27:26when they have to figure out the offense at a slower pace,
00:27:29that's when it gets a little clunky and guys have to figure out
00:27:32how to play together.
00:27:33And honestly, by far, in my mind, the best player on this team so far
00:27:38has been Anthony Davis, who's been able to get stops, get them moving.
00:27:43Bams look good at the four.
00:27:45I think that's something worth watching when we get into the regular season
00:27:48with the Heat.
00:27:49He hit three threes in a game, so he's been pretty good so far.
00:27:52So there's some stuff to take from this.
00:27:54Tatum, it's tough to take much from this.
00:27:56I think you all got good points about where he's at.
00:27:58Sherrod talking about him coming off the championship,
00:28:03playing back, deferring to some of these superstars, him playing a role.
00:28:07I think that's super valid.
00:28:08And yeah, he's probably going to be on the bench in many of these
00:28:12starting lineups, closing lineups.
00:28:14But there will be a game, I think Joe Swayze right,
00:28:17where he gets it going.
00:28:18The one thing I'll say before we move on the article about him,
00:28:22I don't know what's going on with the shooting.
00:28:25Noah, I don't know if you have any idea at this point
00:28:27or you've looked closely at it.
00:28:29He hasn't taken many.
00:28:31That's still the part that's so hard to parse with it.
00:28:33But the three-pointer is nonexistent for him right now.
00:28:36And that goes back to some of his shooting struggles in the playoffs.
00:28:40He was taking more in that role, missing a bunch.
00:28:43I said going into this tournament, I'd like to see him play more
00:28:46around the basket.
00:28:47I want to see him play more around the basket next year.
00:28:49So I guess it's encouraging in that sense that he's moving toward that role
00:28:52with this team.
00:28:54But I didn't want him to make zero threes and take two or three again.
00:28:58It's just not there for him right now.
00:29:00But you know what, Bobby?
00:29:01Here's the thing, though.
00:29:02It goes back to, I think, something Joe Swayze and Noah were talking about.
00:29:06You know, Tatum, I think his experience in winning a championship
00:29:11taught him how to play with really good players
00:29:14and basically get in where you fit in.
00:29:16The things that Tatum, I think, has just cultivated over time
00:29:20to be really exceptional at, you don't necessarily need those things
00:29:23in order to win a gold medal.
00:29:25I think Tatum's playmaking needs to continue to evolve.
00:29:28I think his ability to defend multiple positions,
00:29:31something I thought he did a good job with this year,
00:29:33that, too, needs to evolve.
00:29:35I think there's certain aspects of his game that don't necessarily get
00:29:40the clicks or the credit that they deserve that he, I think,
00:29:44is a little bit more locked into doing.
00:29:47And to be frank and candid with you, I think at the end of the day,
00:29:50Tatum wants to be as complete a player as possible.
00:29:53And his body of work has indicated clearly that he can knock down shots.
00:29:58We know he can score.
00:29:59We know he can rebound.
00:30:01He's a really good rebounder.
00:30:02But it's the playmaking, it's the defense.
00:30:04Those seem to be like the next chapters in his narrative
00:30:08that he needs to really bolster.
00:30:10And I think the Olympics is a great opportunity for him to do that.
00:30:13And he's going to be surrounded by guys who actually are looking
00:30:18for someone to feed them the rock.
00:30:21As you guys pointed out, you got a bunch of number ones all over the place.
00:30:25Alphas galore.
00:30:27Who's going to get them the rock?
00:30:28That's why a guy like Derrick White is so valuable to a team like this
00:30:31because Derrick will come in and be like, okay, y'all want to shoot?
00:30:33All right.
00:30:34I'm good.
00:30:35I don't need to shoot.
00:30:36I'm so good with that.
00:30:38And Tatum is like that as well.
00:30:41But the problem that teams have is you can see –
00:30:44if Derrick White is in there facilitating, you play for that
00:30:47because you know he's probably not going to be looking to score much.
00:30:50Tatum scares the crap out of you because you're on a certain way
00:30:53that they may not necessarily do if you had Derrick White out there
00:30:57or if you had Devin Booker out there who can score,
00:31:00but he's not defending no one.
00:31:02You know whatever he gets offensively,
00:31:03you're going to get it back at the other end of the floor.
00:31:05So, okay, enough Devin Booker slander.
00:31:09I'm going to stop.
00:31:10Yeah, for real.
00:31:11Booker, you need to work on this.
00:31:12Three times, Sherrod.
00:31:14Three times.
00:31:15I'm just slandering.
00:31:16That's what this podcast is about.
00:31:19I've been waiting for this moment to open up this particular box
00:31:22and just let it out.
00:31:24I will say it's funny.
00:31:25He took Jalen's spot in all NBA.
00:31:27He's probably the guy if you were going to put Jalen on his roster
00:31:30in four Celtics feels a little much.
00:31:33Listen, Bobby, Jalen Brown is going to go into the season
00:31:37with what our good friend Gary Washburn will call a sucker's list
00:31:41of folks that he is going to take out one by one.
00:31:45I guarantee you when they play this time.
00:31:48That's such a Gary thing.
00:31:49That will be one of Jalen Brown's best games all season.
00:31:52I thought you were going to say receipts,
00:31:56but yeah, that's a Gary way.
00:31:58That's Gary's version of a receipt.
00:32:00Don't add a booker.
00:32:02Uh-huh.
00:32:03Sucker's list.
00:32:04Uh-huh.
00:32:05Uh-huh.
00:32:06And check them off one by one.
00:32:07He's going to have a list.
00:32:11Maybe.
00:32:12It might not just be for players too.
00:32:15It might even be Stephen A might be on that list too.
00:32:18He's going to have his list going into next season for sure.
00:32:21He doesn't forget it.
00:32:22The Knicks might catch a stray from Jalen Brown because of Stephen A's
00:32:27affinity for the Knicks.
00:32:30I'm here for it, man.
00:32:31I am here for it.
00:32:32You already know I want to see the Celtics-Knicks
00:32:34in the conference finals.
00:32:35That's the dream.
00:32:36If these guys stay healthy, which they should, that should happen.
00:32:40We'll see.
00:32:41By the way, it looks like opening night is going to be Heat-Celtics
00:32:45it looks like.
00:32:46I don't think that's accurate.
00:32:48You don't think so?
00:32:49I don't think so because A, the season actually starts
00:32:53five days before that.
00:32:54I don't see a world where the Celtics don't play for the first five days
00:32:57as the defending champs.
00:32:58That was the exact date and opponent of last year's season.
00:33:02I think that the author of that article, I'm not sure what his sources are,
00:33:05but I think that he might have just looked it up and saw last year's
00:33:08start date because a couple of Celtics comms people like Mark D'Amico
00:33:12have been coming out being like,
00:33:13none of the dates have confirmed for next season.
00:33:15Yeah, because things have pushed back because of the Olympics though,
00:33:17right?
00:33:18I thought Wick might have spilled the beans on that one.
00:33:20That'd be fun if that was what it was going to be,
00:33:23but anyway,
00:33:26Tatum appeared in a story in Sports Illustrated and was on the cover.
00:33:31I know a bunch of people talking to Bob Cousy right now as well.
00:33:34He was a big part of that story.
00:33:36I want to talk about that.
00:33:37The great Gatsby, but yeah, go ahead.
00:33:38But first I want to give a shout out here to HelloFresh.
00:33:43HelloFresh is very near and dear to my heart.
00:33:46Josue loves it.
00:33:47Sharad, one of the biggest HelloFresh fans as well.
00:33:51Have you guys gotten your boxes yet?
00:33:52No, not yet, man.
00:33:54I'm looking forward to it.
00:33:55So Mike came in on Wednesday and I wasted no time.
00:33:59I made two of the meals the first night.
00:34:01Yeah, I don't blame you, man.
00:34:04It's so good.
00:34:05There was a shrimp spaghetti dish that was amazing that night as well.
00:34:10Good spicy butter within that as well.
00:34:13And then yesterday made fish tacos that came out amazing.
00:34:16I've always wanted to make fish tacos at home.
00:34:18HelloFresh gave me all the ingredients I needed to do it.
00:34:21And here's the thing.
00:34:22You're looking for your cabbage or whatever you might need to throw in there.
00:34:28It's all available to you in the box when it comes.
00:34:31It's all pre-portioned.
00:34:33You just got to rip open those packages,

00:34:39Some of these meals are ready that they have in under 15 minutes.
00:34:42So I don't want to go too far into this, but this is just how much I love HelloFresh.
00:34:47HelloFresh was Bobby in his happy space.
00:34:49Oh, my God.
00:34:50I was so happy the last couple of days cooking with them.
00:34:53Yeah, he's a foodie, for sure.
00:34:55It's like he hit the game winning shot in Game 7.
00:34:57Look at that face.
00:34:59Absolutely.
00:35:00Game winning shot in Game 7.
00:35:01That's pretty happy.
00:35:02They're America's number one meal kit for a reason.
00:35:05Here's the deal.

00:35:23They're going to send him the meat.
00:35:25I'm a fish guy, so I go the fish route.
00:35:27Josue, what's your go-to?
00:35:29I usually go protein or pasta.
00:35:32One time I told them, hey, I'm a huge pasta lover, and they sent me all pasta,
00:35:35which is okay.
00:35:37And that's the thing.
00:35:38They'll customize it for you.
00:35:40They got quick and easy recipes.
00:35:41If you don't have the time, as I mentioned,
00:35:43some of those ready in under 20 minutes, fit and wholesome.

00:35:50They got pretty much anything you can imagine in terms of what you need,
00:35:53what you want.
00:35:55They got taste of summer series.
00:35:56So they're always switching up the recipes seasonally.

00:36:28Again, HelloFresh, America's number one meal kit.
00:36:32I could go on and on about them, but go over there and find out more
00:36:35and try it out for yourself.
00:36:37Wait until I get my delivery, man.
00:36:39I'll be talking about it.
00:36:41All right.
00:36:42Tatum, SI.
00:36:45The big thing, obviously, here, Josue, as we've talked about for, I don't know,
00:36:50the whole time we've done the Garden Report, four or five years now.
00:36:54Since, yeah, pretty much.
00:36:56The Tatum-Brown relationship.
00:36:58And, of course, Tatum asked about it again here.
00:37:01Actually opens up a little bit about it.
00:37:03You know, I've tried asking him a million times, Josue,
00:37:05and he doesn't say any of this to me.
00:37:07But with Chris Mannix and SI, he admits he probably should have had
00:37:11Brown's back a little bit more publicly in the past.
00:37:14He said, I've always told him maybe I could have done a better job of voicing
00:37:17my feelings in the public eye.
00:37:19He always knew I wanted him here.
00:37:21I would always tell him, man, I don't get involved with any of the talks.
00:37:24I never go to Brad and want to move any player.
00:37:27I want this guy or I want this guy out.
00:37:30I show up and I want to do my job and play basketball.
00:37:33And looking back in those moments, I didn't know how that could affect
00:37:36somebody because I was never in that situation.
00:37:38I feel like maybe I could have done a better job publicly saying, no,
00:37:42we don't want anybody.
00:37:43We want JB.
00:37:44I was always like, I want to stay out of it.
00:37:46And that obviously goes back most directly to the Durant saga in my mind.
00:37:51They had him floating out there in that trade rumor all summer a couple years
00:37:55ago.
00:37:56And in my mind, Brad needed to come out and say something.
00:37:59Tatum coming out and saying something during that time would have helped.
00:38:02But that put Brown in a weird position going into that next year.
00:38:05And obviously he had a lot of comments throughout that season about his
00:38:08comfort level in Boston, having to sacrifice.
00:38:10It looked like we might see Brown go to free agency, but ultimately he gets
00:38:14all NBA that year, gets super max finals, MVP at this point.
00:38:19The rest is history.
00:38:20So these guys are going to play together for a long time.
00:38:22But Tatum and Manny, I think something we talked about just way here,
00:38:25they just needed to address it.
00:38:28And yes, they could have done it in private and they did,
00:38:30as Tatum talked about here.
00:38:32But publicly, they allowed a lot of stuff to fester there that they could have
00:38:36put to bed pretty quickly if they just addressed it publicly.
00:38:40Yeah, I agree.
00:38:41I mean, we've been saying that for years.
00:38:42I think there's two parts of it.
00:38:44I mean, that part, I agree with Tatum in the sense of, hey,
00:38:49we speak to one another.
00:38:51We have a different type of relationship.
00:38:53It's not always in front of cameras, but there's a relationship there.
00:38:56Sure.
00:38:57I'm glad Tatum would come out now and say that.
00:38:59But the other part of it is when it comes to the rumors and all that stuff
00:39:03that was going around,
00:39:04it seemed like if there's a top-tier superstar available,
00:39:07all of a sudden Jalen was thrown into these deals.
00:39:11There's a lot of chatter out there.
00:39:13I'm kind of with Tatum staying out of that stuff because I just think once you
00:39:18start commenting on those type of things,
00:39:20if something happens down the road, it's like, well, you said this and that.
00:39:23It gives off the image that Tatum has a whole lot of say of what the front
00:39:28office wants to do with the roster.
00:39:30So I agree with Tatum not chiming in on that, saying, hey, guys,
00:39:34we're not going to trade Jalen on this and that,
00:39:36because then it sends off the message that, oh,
00:39:38I'm in those type of conversations.
00:39:40Oh, yeah, that Derek White trade, did you have a say in that?
00:39:43Or did you have a say in the other deal?
00:39:45That's what he wanted to avoid.
00:39:47Exactly.
00:39:48I think that was the right thing.
00:39:49I think it would have sent a lot of mixed signals out there,
00:39:51including one to Jalen, being like, well, Jalen,
00:39:54what do you have to do with this?
00:39:56Do you have a say in this?
00:39:57It would have sent out the wrong message.
00:39:58So I think Tatum did the right thing in staying out of that type of dialogue,
00:40:03staying out of those conversations, not putting out the wrong image.
00:40:06And, you know, in terms of like, yeah,
00:40:07could he have made it seem like they're better friends than what it looks like?
00:40:11Sure.
00:40:12I guess it would have helped things, but hey, it all worked out in the end.
00:40:15And like you said, Bobby,
00:40:16they're still going to be competing for years from now.
00:40:19Each player got their max deal.
00:40:20They both deserved it.
00:40:21And we can't wait to see this whole thing unfold.
00:40:23Can they turn this thing into a dynasty?
00:40:25But yeah, looking back on it though,
00:40:26yeah, it's interesting to hear Tatum say all this now in this conversation with
00:40:31Sports Illustrated.
00:40:33What did you make of it, Noah?
00:40:35Go ahead, Sharon.
00:40:36No, you got it.
00:40:38No, what I was going to say, I think, first of all,
00:40:40there's a lot of different things that you can say.
00:40:42And one of them is like acting like you're part of the front office,
00:40:45but there's other ways to express support that are a lot more subtle and
00:40:48position you as a player and not as a part of your decision-making.
00:40:53And I even thought that after the Celtics got eliminated last playoff run by the
00:40:56Heat, Tatum, you know,
00:40:58in the postgame presser made very clear that he wanted Jalen Brown to be in
00:41:01Boston long-term.
00:41:03And I don't know the impact of that statement, but he has done that.
00:41:06And you can see the reflection.
00:41:08I think one thing that was funny about his statement for SI was I had never
00:41:11been in that position.
00:41:12So I didn't think how that could affect someone.
00:41:15I just think that's take the basketball out.
00:41:17That's just a wild line because it just,
00:41:20we are basically just saying that you don't know how to experience empathy for
00:41:22someone that is not in your position.
00:41:23So I thought that was just a great thing to say.
00:41:25I know he meant it in a nice way, but it just wasn't,
00:41:28we never get peeks into their personality.
00:41:30So to me,
00:41:31that was just ironic because anybody could guess that it would suck to be in
00:41:34that position, Jalen Brown's position.
00:41:36So that was just one thing that I thought about,
00:41:38but I do think that Tatum has had time to reflect and think a lot about his
00:41:43role. And I don't think it's a passive one.
00:41:45I think being passive and like,
00:41:47I would probably disagree with what you think just way about him,
00:41:50but you know,
00:41:51it's better for him to kind of remove himself from the equation,
00:41:53like regardless of whether or not he it's fair or he wants to,
00:41:56like all of these guys are stars and they have an enormous platform for
00:42:00social issues for a team issues for all sorts of things.
00:42:04And so always the decision to just get out of stuff has a consequence.
00:42:07And I think in this case,
00:42:08part of what he's doing now,
00:42:10like saying to SI that he was happy that Jalen Brown won finals MVP,
00:42:14and that he felt like he had been stopped from things in the past,
00:42:17like wouldn't have killed him in the past to say,
00:42:19I think Jalen Brown should be,
00:42:21could have been all MBA or should have, you know,
00:42:23like stuff like that goes a long way.
00:42:24And I don't think that he was always great at making those statements.
00:42:27Yeah.
00:42:30And so, and that's why I actually really liked hearing these comments from him.
00:42:34And I think they show growth on a personal level,
00:42:36just thinking about like my voice actually carries a lot of weight and things
00:42:40that I say publicly can actually really alleviate burdens on others.
00:42:44And you don't have to experience those things to be able to imagine or empathize
00:42:47like how someone else might be impacted by those things.
00:42:50Yeah. There's, there's an unwritten,
00:42:53but very real contract that you sign onto when you become the face of the
00:42:57franchise.
00:42:58And often that contract involves you speaking out on things that may in the
00:43:04eyes of many be above your pay grade. Tatum, that's, you gotta do that.
00:43:09And when you don't do that, that's when problems arise. I, you don't,
00:43:13you can do that without people necessarily attaching you with the decision
00:43:18making process of your organization. I mean,
00:43:20if you're asked a question about Jalen, you can just, it's easy to say, well,
00:43:23Brad, you know, and the guys in the front office, they make those final calls,
00:43:26but I can say this, me and Jalen playing together, we win a lot of games.
00:43:29You've seen that we've won at a high level.
00:43:31There are ways that you can,
00:43:33you can cushion that particular conversation and discourse in a way that
00:43:38acknowledges how much you feel about Jalen in terms of winning games,
00:43:43which is one of the ultimate,
00:43:44what this comes down to and keep a certain amount of distance between yourself
00:43:48and at least the perceived or the perception rather of you as a decision
00:43:53maker. I mean, like, look at LeBron James. I mean,
00:43:56it's clear and undeniable the impact that he has made.
00:44:00Yeah. I was going to say, what about him?
00:44:05Favoritism, nepotism.
00:44:08It's all part of the package with LeBron.
00:44:16Yeah. And I won't shout him out the way Jalen shouted him out,
00:44:18but that's another story.
00:44:26I am not. In fact,
00:44:29I'm not hating on him at all for that.
00:44:38I just think Tatum is, is being authentically who he is.
00:44:41And part of that in those particular moments was to kind of recall yourself
00:44:46and take yourself out of that. And to Noah's point,
00:44:48it is surprising that he can't actually envision this being a problem for
00:44:52someone else. It's like,
00:44:53it's really not that big a stress to think that that might make someone
00:44:56uncomfortable.
00:44:57We were screaming it at the time where like say something at many different
00:45:00points, actually.
00:45:04Right. But he wasn't alone in that. I mean, the Celtics, they,
00:45:07they also felt as though they left, you know, Jalen out there to drive,
00:45:10because I mean,
00:45:11you think about the big names that have been coming about in the last four or
00:45:15five years, when you talk about Kevin Durant, don't forget about Jimmy Butler.
00:45:19Don't forget about, you know, Bradley Beal, which I thought to me,
00:45:22that was the moment when I was clear as day that Tatum has
00:45:27zero impact or certainly influence on the decision-making of the organization
00:45:32because Beal is his boy.
00:45:35That's literally his guy from when he was like, yay big.
00:45:39And if there's an opportunity to add somebody that you literally grew up with
00:45:44and your team doesn't even, even blanket them,
00:45:48you are clearly not trying to influence that decision.
00:45:50And I think for Tatum, to me,
00:45:52that was a great example of when he realized that's my boy and I love him to
00:45:55death, but this ain't going to work if he's on this team.
00:45:59It's much better with me and Jalen.
00:46:00And so I'm going to do what I've always done and keep my damn mouth shut and
00:46:04just let them do what they do.
00:46:06I think it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if they
00:46:09were seriously contemplating moving Jalen.
00:46:12Would that be the moment that Tatum had a conversation with Brad and be like,
00:46:17nah, we shouldn't do this. Or would he still remain quiet? To me,
00:46:21that's the moment where that loyalty, love,
00:46:26whatever you want to call it for Jalen will be put to the test.
00:46:29But other than that Tatum's going to keep doing what Tatum does and that is
00:46:33ball out and every now and then speak on it,
00:46:38but never hardly ever speak on it the way we think he should speak on it or
00:46:42articulate how he feels about it. Because what he said in the SIR,
00:46:45but I think is, is really how a lot of us were thinking,
00:46:48you got to feel this way about him. Right. Right.
00:46:51And it wasn't until the SIR article. So yeah,
00:46:53I probably should have said more publicly. It's better late than never.
00:46:58Yeah. We sometimes forget Tatum is still in what, 26 years old.
00:47:01And he's still figuring out a lot of this stuff about how to be a leader.
00:47:05And this is part of that growth curve.
00:47:08Yeah. And I like them acknowledging some of their on-court difficulties to
00:47:11figure out we need each other, learn how to coexist,
00:47:14be the best version of ourselves in order for this all to work.
00:47:17We weren't the best playmakers early in our careers.
00:47:19We developed into guys that really bleed the game.
00:47:22We want to be a good example of guys that play on both ends of the floor and
00:47:25guys who are the best teammates that we can be. So it's kind of how I felt.
00:47:31He acknowledged what we've been saying for years. And I love it for that.
00:47:35I love it for that. Better late than never.
00:47:38Absolutely. So you can go check out that article on SI.
00:47:41I want to hit on this too quickly because it is kind of a big deal,
00:47:45even though it's not the biggest Celtics story ever,
00:47:48but the TV rights came out and I know some people are bummed about TNT losing
00:47:53the rights, mostly because the inside, the NBA, pregame,
00:47:58halftime postgame show, probably going away at this point.
00:48:01I guess Charles Barkley shred said he's had some conversations with some of
00:48:06the other TV networks that have gotten the rights here,
00:48:09namely Amazon and NBC. So maybe they reworked the show somewhere else.
00:48:14Maybe some of the guys reunite in a different location here.
00:48:18But this does feel like an end of an era with TNT going down.
00:48:22I don't know what to expect from NBC.
00:48:24You probably remember the old NBC broadcast rod.
00:48:28I don't know if it's going to be the same thing or similar or what that was.
00:48:34And then Amazon's a whole new world.
00:48:36You're going to have to be logging in your account on your smart TV to figure
00:48:40out how to watch those games and they're not going to have a ton of games,
00:48:43but they're going to be that third broadcaster alongside ESPN and NBC at this
00:48:48point. So I don't know.
00:48:50Would you make them all the charade and is it going to be better or worse for
00:48:54viewers experience here?
00:48:56As the Celtics are certainly going to be on many of these national TV games
00:49:00and in the next handful of years,
00:49:02I think it's going to be worse because first of all,
00:49:05of all the players that the NBA has partnered with from a TV rights standpoint,
00:49:10TNT has been just the most consistently elite of the bunch.
00:49:15When you look at that, you know, with Ernie, Charles, Shaq, Chuck,
00:49:19those guys,
00:49:20they have been the standard that every other on air grouping has
00:49:25tried to be.
00:49:26And knowing that this is going to be the last year as they're currently
00:49:30constructed.
00:49:31Oh God.
00:49:33Yeah.
00:49:34Jimmy.
00:49:36We let anybody in.
00:49:40Man.
00:49:42Hold on, Jimmy.
00:49:43Do we need to give you a test before you come in?
00:49:46Do you crash in the show?
00:49:49Damn it.
00:49:50Oh, hell yeah.
00:49:53Forgot the, what were you saying?
00:49:56Where are you in Jurassic park?
00:49:58What's going on?
00:49:59I'm at my favorite place by the pool.
00:50:01All right.
00:50:02Damn it.
00:50:03No one even brought it up until Jimmy comes off.
00:50:05Of course.
00:50:06The most Jimmy thing ever with the sun.
00:50:12By the way,
00:50:13our Paris correspondent coming up for the Olympics,
00:50:16Jimmy Toscano is going to be on the ground out there.
00:50:19That's right.
00:50:20Yeah.
00:50:21So representing overseas.
00:50:27Are you going to that's what's up Jimmy?
00:50:28I didn't know that.
00:50:29What do you want to hit on Jimmy?
00:50:30We talked a little Tatum.
00:50:31We talked to a little team USA.
00:50:32This better be good.
00:50:33We're kicking around.
00:50:34I'm sorry,
00:50:36Noah,
00:50:37this is wild,
00:50:38but yeah,
00:50:39go,
00:50:40go ahead,
00:50:41Jimmy.
00:50:42What do you want to hit on Jimmy?
00:50:43We'll give you,
00:50:44we'll give you.
00:50:45Sorry to start to interrupt.
00:50:46No,
00:50:47why are you apologizing to me?
00:50:48Because this is just,
00:50:49this is so Jimmy.
00:50:51And you know,
00:50:52this is all,
00:50:54this only happens here.
00:50:55So I'm sure you're like,
00:50:56what is going on right now?
00:50:57Only on the garden report.
00:50:58This is what we do.
00:50:59What other podcast does this?
00:51:00For real?
00:51:01Yeah,
00:51:02exactly.
00:51:03Give us,
00:51:04give us,
00:51:05give us something,
00:51:06Jimmy.
00:51:07What do you got?
00:51:08You got,
00:51:09you got,
00:51:10we got Tatum.
00:51:11We got team USA.
00:51:12We got TNT.
00:51:13Well,
00:51:14okay.
00:51:15Well,
00:51:16it came in with like a particular thing.
00:51:17That was Saturday morning.
00:51:18Yeah.
00:51:19Right.
00:51:21Exactly.
00:51:22Coming in here like WWE style.
00:51:23Like,
00:51:24come on,
00:51:25man.
00:51:26What do you got?
00:51:27I didn't get them.
00:51:28I didn't go ahead,
00:51:29man.
00:51:30I didn't get the memo of the time.
00:51:31Start here.
00:51:32I,
00:51:33I,
00:51:34I,
00:51:35I pop on Instagram.
00:51:36I see Bobby's live.
00:51:37I'm like,
00:51:38what the F?
00:51:39So I hopped on immediately to make sure that I can.
00:51:40Yeah.
00:51:41It was phenomenal.
00:51:42Share it on.
00:51:43I love it.
00:51:44I got the phenomenal shirt.
00:51:45I'm representing Jimmy.
00:51:46They try to,
00:51:47I'm representing Bobby.
00:51:48I'm representing Bobby.
00:51:49I'm representing Jimmy.
00:51:50They're trying to shut down inside the NBA.
00:51:53What are we going to do about this?
00:51:54By the way,
00:51:55guys,
00:51:56hard hats are still on sale.
00:51:57Thank you.
00:51:58Shiraz.
00:51:59I love how you still plug it in.
00:52:00The TNT stuff is sad to me.
00:52:02I mean,
00:52:03we all love,
00:52:04we all love what the product that TNT puts out there.
00:52:06It's the best.
00:52:07We all love the,
00:52:08the,
00:52:09the,
00:52:10whether it's pregame,
00:52:11halftime show,
00:52:12post game,
00:52:13you know,
00:52:14that crew is just unbelievable.
00:52:15So that's sad.
00:52:16I mean,
00:52:17if you're a fan,
00:52:19like it's one of those,
00:52:20like Chuck,
00:52:21Chuck's,
00:52:22you know,
00:52:23statement kind of summed it up nicely.
00:52:24Like,
00:52:25it's a sad day for the fans.
00:52:26Like it's about money and whatever.
00:52:27Like at the end of the day,
00:52:28we all know that the business side of things is going to rear Chuck Lee head and,
00:52:30and win out,
00:52:31I guess.
00:52:32But anyone who's a fan of the NBA over the last 20 years or whatever has like,
00:52:36those guys are like,
00:52:37almost like they're in your living room.
00:52:39They're like part of your extended family.
00:52:41If you're an NBA fan,
00:52:42you know,
00:52:43you grew up watching the game,
00:52:44you look forward to their reactions.
00:52:45They call it like,
00:52:46they see it too.
00:52:47They don't,
00:52:48you know,
00:52:49sugarcoat things.
00:52:50They don't beat around the bush there.
00:52:51They all understand the game a lot,
00:52:52you know,
00:52:53obviously former players.
00:52:54And then you've got Ernie who's just like unbelievable in his role and,
00:52:58and like the camaraderie that they get.
00:53:00I think we honestly,
00:53:01like our show is like,
00:53:02like a offshoot of that show.
00:53:05I feel like we have some similar vibes in a way where we're like friendly.
00:53:08We,
00:53:09yeah.
00:53:10Amazon wants to call,
00:53:11call us in.
00:53:12We're ready.
00:53:13That's right.
00:53:14We're ready.
00:53:15We might be the new,
00:53:16the new season's over,
00:53:17but only like this only zoom version.
00:53:19Like,
00:53:20yeah,
00:53:21the internet version.
00:53:22I hope that those guys can still figure out a way to keep it going in some
00:53:24capacity.
00:53:25I don't know if they're going to end up on different networks,
00:53:27but it would be a shame to just not have that.
00:53:29Some,
00:53:30some version of that show,
00:53:32because it's just such a great thing.
00:53:34And so it's,
00:53:35it's sad,
00:53:36but you know,
00:53:37NBC is going to do an amazing job with the coverage.
00:53:39You know,
00:53:40obviously they've,
00:53:41you know,
00:53:42they're sure odds looks a little surprised by that,
00:53:44but I think they're going to,
00:53:45I,
00:53:46I,
00:53:47you know,
00:53:48I think I'm excited to get the NB,
00:53:49the NBC theme song back for NBC or NBA.
00:53:53Why is everyone assuming that though?
00:53:55Yeah.
00:53:56I mean,
00:53:57it's a layup.
00:53:58It's a layup.
00:53:59That's a horrible idea.
00:54:01So what?
00:54:02Someone's got to get that.
00:54:04Come on,
00:54:06but you got to have,
00:54:07they're going to,
00:54:08they're going to,
00:54:09they're going to modernize whatever they do.
00:54:10They have to.
00:54:11Cause if they try to bring back what they did in the eighties,
00:54:15that's going to be a problem,
00:54:16but the eighties,
00:54:18like,
00:54:19come on.
00:54:20I mean,
00:54:21it won't be the same vibes.
00:54:22Yeah.
00:54:23What do you want?
00:54:24Like AI,
00:54:25AI EDM version of it.
00:54:27Like,
00:54:28come on,
00:54:29give me the,
00:54:30give me like the original stuff.
00:54:31You know,
00:54:32you probably not that far off.
00:54:33It's probably going to be something like that.
00:54:35Yeah.
00:54:36It's not too much to say about it.
00:54:38It's a little bit of a bummer,
00:54:40but maybe those guys will reunite somewhere else.
00:54:43Maybe we'll get something new.
00:54:44I know Dwayne Wade's on with Noah Eagle for the Olympics.
00:54:47Maybe we'll see those guys with NBC.
00:54:49I'm not sure.
00:54:52Sorry.
00:54:53I just thought of that right now.
00:54:54He was at the opening ceremony.
00:54:55Like why is he playing the torch?
00:54:57Who better to light the torch?
00:54:58What is he?
00:54:59Is he an Olympian?
00:55:00Does he have anything to do with sports?
00:55:02It's just so random.
00:55:04Snoop being there.
00:55:07Like why is America so random sometimes?
00:55:09It's just a random thing to do,
00:55:11but all right.
00:55:13You watched.
00:55:16What are they looking for?
00:55:18Eyeballs.
00:55:19Viewers,
00:55:20I guess that's true.
00:55:21Man,
00:55:22he does have like 17 endorsements.
00:55:24Snoop can pass the torch,
00:55:26if you know what I mean.
00:55:27I was just going to say,
00:55:28no one better.
00:55:29All right,
00:55:30before we go off the rails here,
00:55:31I have some rapid fire questions to close us out.
00:55:34We're very close to veering off the rails,
00:55:37but we're still on.
00:55:39Rocket Money,
00:55:40want to give them a shout out.
00:55:41They're back with us here on the Garden Report.
00:55:43CLNS Media,
00:55:44a great sponsor.
00:55:45Right now,
00:55:46you can cancel your unwanted subscriptions with Rocket Money.
00:55:52How much do you think you're paying in subscriptions every month,
00:55:55Jimmy?
00:55:56Probably more than you think.
00:55:57Over 74% of subscriptions get forgot,
00:56:00or 74% of people have subscriptions they've forgotten about.
00:56:06I definitely did.
00:56:07And thanks to Rocket Money,
00:56:08I'm no longer wasting money.
00:56:09I'm no longer wasting money on the ones I forgot about.
00:56:12Most Americans think they spend about $62 per month on subscriptions.
00:56:17But the real number is closer to 300,
00:56:19as Jimmy knows.
00:56:20This is literally thousands a year.
00:56:22And it adds up.
00:56:23You just,
00:56:24you go month to month,
00:56:25you let it go,
00:56:26and the year goes by.
00:56:27And like you said,
00:56:28it's thousands of dollars.
00:56:29You don't look at your credit card statement for a couple months,
00:56:31because you just don't want to.
00:56:32And then you realize,
00:56:33oh my God,
00:56:34these are all automatically just coming back here.
00:56:36I just keep paying calm.
00:56:38You start using Rocket Money,
00:56:41and they'll find things you didn't even know about.
00:56:44Things you forgot about.
00:56:45And that certainly happened to me.
00:56:47Helped me cancel the ones I didn't want anymore.
00:56:49So Rocket Money is a personal finance app.
00:56:52There's more than this,
00:56:53but that's the big feature right there.
00:56:54That helps you find and cancel your unwanted subscriptions.
00:56:57They'll monitor your spending.
00:56:58They'll help you lower your bills,
00:56:59so you can grow your savings.
00:57:01You have full control over your subscriptions
00:57:03with a clear view of expenses.
00:57:06You can see all the subscriptions in one place
00:57:08and help you cancel with a few taps.
00:57:10Love the dashboard that tracks the month's spending
00:57:13compared to last month,
00:57:14so you can see how much you're saving month to month
00:57:17as you start to knock some of these things off.
00:57:19They'll even try and negotiate lower bills for you.
00:57:22Of course,
00:57:23newspapers,
00:57:24sometimes they'll offer you a lower price
00:57:26if you go to cancel.
00:57:27Stuff like that.
00:57:28That's what makes Rocket Money great.
00:57:29They'll just handle it for you in one app,
00:57:31one location.
00:57:32They have over 5 million users
00:57:34that have saved a total of $500 million
00:57:37in canceled subscriptions,
00:57:39saving members up to $740 a year
00:57:41using all the app's features.
00:57:43Stop wasting money on things you don't use.
00:57:45Cancel your unwanted subscriptions
00:57:47by going to rocketmoney.com
00:57:49slash garden.
00:57:50That's rocketmoney.com
00:57:51slash garden.
00:57:53rocketmoney.com
00:57:54slash garden.
00:57:56Here's some rapid fire ones
00:57:57I'll throw to you guys in a row
00:57:59before we get out of here.
00:58:00Some summer topics.
00:58:02This could be your best offseason move
00:58:06or maybe even your favorite offseason move
00:58:08for the Celtics so far.
00:58:10We'll start with Joe Sway.
00:58:12Which do you think is going to have
00:58:14the biggest impact going forward?
00:58:16Which one was your favorite
00:58:17if you want to go that direction?
00:58:19Well,
00:58:20biggest impact,
00:58:21it's got to be re-signed Tatum for sure.
00:58:23But my favorite one was signed Derek White.
00:58:25I just thought that was super important
00:58:27for these guys to get done.
00:58:28And unbeknownst to me,
00:58:31Bradder went out and signed everyone else.
00:58:33Maybe not every single person,
00:58:35but not only the rotation,
00:58:37but the depth at the center position,
00:58:39which is super important
00:58:40going into next season
00:58:41without Chris Pasporzingis.
00:58:43So A-plus effort for sure for Brad Stevens.
00:58:46But that one was my favorite.
00:58:47I thought Derek White, man,
00:58:49was someone that you had to get down.
00:58:50And for that figure,
00:58:51I think it's such a bargain
00:58:53when you look at where the NBA is heading
00:58:54in the next few years.
00:58:55The kind of money that could have been
00:58:56offered to him on the open market.
00:58:58You avoid all that.
00:58:59And you have a really special player
00:59:01who's going into his prime right now.
00:59:02So that's my favorite move for sure.
00:59:04But overall,
00:59:05just A-plus work for Brad.
00:59:07Just to sign not only,
00:59:09again, the entire rotation
00:59:11for the finals team,
00:59:12the championship team,
00:59:13but also the three centers
00:59:16at the center position.
00:59:18That's huge.
00:59:21I was going to say Derek White's extension.
00:59:23I think that was the singular most impactful.
00:59:25And I guess it wasn't a sure thing.
00:59:27I think we were thinking
00:59:28maybe it happens this time,
00:59:29maybe it doesn't.
00:59:30Tatum's felt inevitable.
00:59:32But I think the other one that I like,
00:59:34maybe just to pick a more under-the-radar one,
00:59:37is just the combination of bringing back
00:59:40Keita and Luke, I guess.
00:59:43The two centers that
00:59:45maybe nobody really cares about
00:59:46outside of Boston.
00:59:47Outside of Bobby.
00:59:48Outside of Bobby, yeah.
00:59:51And then, yeah,
00:59:52I think just bringing those two guys
00:59:53back on minimums.
00:59:55I do think there was a little bit
00:59:56of a bargain for them.
00:59:57I have to say it.
00:59:58For them, yeah.
00:59:59I am too.
01:00:00And, yeah, I think that was,
01:00:01it's impactful.
01:00:02And especially with Porzingis
01:00:03being hurt next year,
01:00:04there's so much about the Celtics defense
01:00:05that is complex.
01:00:06And just to be able to bring in
01:00:07the same guys and not have
01:00:08a learning curve there,
01:00:09I think will be really, really helpful.
01:00:12Shrad, what did you like?
01:00:15As far as impact,
01:00:16there's no question.
01:00:17Your best player, Tatum,
01:00:18getting him taken care of,
01:00:19which is a no-brainer.
01:00:20But to me,
01:00:21the deal that I liked the most
01:00:23was actually the Sam Hauser resigning.
01:00:26And the reason why,
01:00:27because when you look
01:00:28at the Celtics rotation,
01:00:30the top eight players,
01:00:32there's a certain interchangeability
01:00:34with most of those guys.
01:00:35But Sam brought a unique skill set
01:00:38to the game that they absolutely needed.
01:00:40I mean, this is a guy
01:00:41that is a career 41%, 42%,
01:00:43three-point shooter.
01:00:44Those do not grow on trees.
01:00:46You're not going to find
01:00:47a lot of guys like that.
01:00:49And even though they drafted
01:00:50Baylor, Shireman,
01:00:53and they've got the Peterson kid
01:00:54up in G League,
01:00:56those guys aren't, to be candid,
01:00:59they're not on the same level as Sam.
01:01:01And with Sam,
01:01:03similar to Derek White,
01:01:04you don't want to see him
01:01:05hit the open market
01:01:06because someone will overpay for him.
01:01:09And I think the deal
01:01:10that they were ultimately able to reach
01:01:12was one where Sam probably left
01:01:14some money on the table,
01:01:15but he got a tremendous amount
01:01:17of job security.
01:01:18And for someone who went undrafted
01:01:20to get the kind of money
01:01:21that he's going to be now getting
01:01:23once his new deal kicks in,
01:01:25that's life-changing.
01:01:28That's generational wealth
01:01:30that for a guy that didn't get drafted
01:01:32into the NBA
01:01:33in a very short period of time,
01:01:35position yourself for generational wealth,
01:01:37and you got your first warrant
01:01:38coming in a few weeks.
01:01:40The timing of all this
01:01:41is very good for Sam.
01:01:43So to me, that's the one deal
01:01:45that I feel good about
01:01:46because I think of all the deals they got,
01:01:48that's the one that feels
01:01:49like the biggest bargain,
01:01:51that they're going to get
01:01:53Derek White is going to be,
01:01:54he's going to earn that money.
01:01:55He's going to be a player
01:01:56whose salary and what he contributes
01:01:58would be fairly comparable.
01:02:00I think Sam is a guy
01:02:01that's going to exceed that
01:02:02because as we saw in the playoffs,
01:02:03particularly in the finals,
01:02:05his game is evolving.
01:02:07All of a sudden, we start seeing
01:02:08that dribble, step in, mid-range shot.
01:02:11If Sam can start making that shot,
01:02:13he becomes a major problem
01:02:15because now all of a sudden
01:02:16you can't just worry
01:02:17about closing out well on him
01:02:19and that can limit him.
01:02:20Now, if you're closing out well
01:02:21and he steps in and can hit the mid-range
01:02:23and he's comfortable taking that shot,
01:02:25he becomes an even bigger threat
01:02:27offensively than he is right now.
01:02:30What do you like, Jimmy?
01:02:31Summer of Sam continues.
01:02:33I actually saw him last night.
01:02:34I was at our neighborhood bar.
01:02:35What?
01:02:36Pier 6 and he showed up
01:02:38with a couple of friends.
01:02:39I was hoping that he was just going
01:02:40to buy around for the whole bar
01:02:42with Mr. Moneybags,
01:02:44the new contract, but no.
01:02:45It hasn't kicked in yet.
01:02:46It hasn't started yet.
01:02:47Yeah, that's true.
01:02:49Money management is important.
01:02:53He actually was there
01:02:54and obviously sticks out a little bit.
01:02:56Now, if Pritchard was there,
01:02:58maybe a different story.
01:02:59Yeah, exactly.
01:03:02Good answer, Sherrod.
01:03:03I'm going to agree with Joe Sway.
01:03:04I think the white signing,
01:03:06that was the most surprising,
01:03:10but in a good way.
01:03:11I think I was on this show
01:03:12with you guys and I said,
01:03:13oh, there's no way
01:03:14that he's going to agree
01:03:15to an extension.
01:03:16He's going to wait
01:03:17and maximize his opportunities
01:03:19to make more money,
01:03:20but credit to Stevens.
01:03:24I think credit
01:03:25to the Celtics organization
01:03:26for being a place
01:03:27that players are willing
01:03:28to maybe say,
01:03:30you know what, I like it here.
01:03:31I'm willing to sign the extension now
01:03:33instead of waiting
01:03:35until I can get
01:03:36maybe a little bit more,
01:03:37but who knows what's going to happen
01:03:38within that year.
01:03:39I'm with Joe Sway
01:03:40on that being my favorite one.
01:03:42Obviously, Tatum, Hauser,
01:03:44bringing the band back together.
01:03:47It's kind of like pick your poison
01:03:48in a way of which one
01:03:49you like the most,
01:03:50but the Celtics put themselves
01:03:52into a position
01:03:53where they are the favorites
01:03:54to repeat next year.
01:03:56I think we should all
01:03:57be pretty happy
01:03:58with all the signings
01:03:59that they made,
01:04:00re-signings or extensions.
01:04:02Yeah, and I'll mix this one in
01:04:03with the next question here.
01:04:05I love the draft picks.
01:04:07See in the moment,
01:04:08Summer League,
01:04:09first impression strong.
01:04:10Both look ready to go
01:04:12in small roles
01:04:13with the Celtics this year.
01:04:15Stuff's important.
01:04:16You've got to nail your draft picks
01:04:17with the cost of their roster
01:04:19and the direction they're going in.
01:04:21And Watson and Sharman
01:04:22both look pretty good out in Vegas.
01:04:24I'm especially excited about Watson
01:04:26who we'll see when they add him
01:04:27on the two-way deal.
01:04:28It still hasn't happened yet,
01:04:30but feels inevitable at this point.
01:04:32Who do you think, Joe Sway?
01:04:34Could be one of those guys.
01:04:35Could be one of the other
01:04:36younger guys on the roster.
01:04:37We saw a lot of them
01:04:38out at Summer League.
01:04:39Who will surprise most
01:04:41on the Celtics this season
01:04:43given the guys they have
01:04:44on the roster right now?
01:04:47Uh, man.
01:04:50Surprise most.
01:04:52Right?
01:04:53Honestly, my gut wants to say Kada.
01:04:55I'm thinking about those
01:04:56first couple of months
01:04:57of the season.
01:04:59Maybe he's just someone
01:05:01that averages, I don't know,
01:05:02seven rebounds or so.
01:05:04He gets thrust in there.
01:05:05All of a sudden, he's putting up.
01:05:06He's getting 16 to 17 minutes
01:05:09a game or something.
01:05:10He's making the most of it
01:05:12just from the early start.
01:05:13It's really hard to say right now.
01:05:15I'll say Kada.
01:05:17F it.
01:05:18I think between him and Luke,
01:05:21obviously, there's going to be
01:05:23a lot more minutes around to start.
01:05:25Maybe he gets up to a quick start
01:05:27off the bench.
01:05:28Again, just as a muscle guy,
01:05:29grabs a lot of rebounds
01:05:31and protects the rim.
01:05:33I think I know Noah's answer.
01:05:36I didn't even really have one.
01:05:37I was going to just say,
01:05:38I think Kada's the only one
01:05:39that's really positioned
01:05:40to have a bigger role next year.
01:05:42I did not expect that from him.
01:05:44I thought you were going to show
01:05:45some love to Springer.
01:05:46I did too, Bobby.
01:05:48Oh, yeah.
01:05:49Here's the thing, though.
01:05:50I just don't know if we're talking
01:05:51early parts of the season.
01:05:52I don't know that he's going to have-
01:05:53Could be any part of the season.
01:05:58I got my answer.
01:06:00I don't know.
01:06:01I just don't know that he has a pathway.
01:06:02That's why I'm really high on him.
01:06:04I just don't know about this opportunity
01:06:05here in Boston next year.
01:06:07Someone's going to have to go down,
01:06:08which I don't hope for,
01:06:09but if they do,
01:06:11he's ready to go.
01:06:13Who do you got, Jimmy?
01:06:14What about Tillman?
01:06:15Tillman could have a bit of a role with-
01:06:17That's a good answer.
01:06:18Porzingis being out to start the year.
01:06:21He stepped in to some extent
01:06:24in the finals there.
01:06:26He might be a guy.
01:06:27Obviously, he's got NBA experience already,
01:06:29so he's got a little bit of a leg up
01:06:31on some of the younger guys,
01:06:32the rookies and whatnot.
01:06:34I would say it's his opportunity to lose,
01:06:36to be honest, with Tillman.
01:06:38He's obviously somebody that they like.
01:06:39They traded for him.
01:06:40They extended him.
01:06:42He seems like a good character guy, for sure.
01:06:44You guys would know more than me,
01:06:45but based on what I've seen,
01:06:46at least from the outside,
01:06:47so that's my answer, Tillman.
01:06:49Sherrod, who are you going with?
01:06:51Yes, Jimmy.
01:06:52That's my pick, too.
01:06:54Nice.
01:06:55That was my pick from the beginning,
01:06:57simply because, remember,
01:06:58Tillman came midseason,
01:07:00so he never had a chance to fully
01:07:02go through training camp with these guys
01:07:04and just really fully activate himself
01:07:06from day one.
01:07:07That's going to be to his benefit.
01:07:08People forget that Tillman-
01:07:09This is a guy who has been an NBA starter
01:07:11on a team that got to the playoffs
01:07:13when he was in Memphis.
01:07:14Let's not pretend as if this is a guy
01:07:16that doesn't have a body of work
01:07:18that warrants him being in the mix
01:07:20to be a starter.
01:07:21When you look at his overall game,
01:07:23it really does seem to be somewhere
01:07:25between Luke and Cato,
01:07:27where he's more physical than Luke.
01:07:29I don't think he's as polished
01:07:31offensively as Cato is.
01:07:33Cato may seem raw,
01:07:34but every time I see Cato play,
01:07:35he gets buckets.
01:07:36He gets buckets.
01:07:39They're not just lob dunks.
01:07:41He actually has post moves
01:07:42that he's able to execute.
01:07:44To me, Tillman is the best
01:07:46of what each of those guys
01:07:48brings to the table.
01:07:49Then when you throw in the fact
01:07:50that he is experienced
01:07:51and he's only 25, 26 years old,
01:07:54it makes a lot of sense that he's a guy
01:07:56that's going to carve out a role
01:07:58for himself and a role
01:08:00that I don't think anyone anticipates
01:08:02to any great extent.
01:08:04As Noah pointed out
01:08:05and others have pointed out,
01:08:06with Porzingis being out,
01:08:07there's a golden opportunity
01:08:08for one of those bigs
01:08:09to really establish themselves
01:08:11at the start of the season.
01:08:13I think Tillman is going to be that guy.
01:08:16Last question I got for us here
01:08:18before we move on.
01:08:20USA, Serbia tomorrow.
01:08:22Probably have some coverage of that.
01:08:24I want to revisit this question
01:08:26because I'm sure we're all
01:08:27thinking about it a little bit.
01:08:28It's probably the biggest question
01:08:29because everybody's back on the Celtics
01:08:31and there's not a ton of questions
01:08:33outside of the Porzingis thing
01:08:34with Boston.
01:08:36At least once the playoffs come around.
01:08:39Who are the three biggest threats
01:08:41to Boston?
01:08:42This one's tough
01:08:43because a lot of them are in the West.
01:08:45Probably have to hedge a little bit.
01:08:47Who do you think comes out of the West
01:08:49with this question?
01:08:51I'm revisiting it just because
01:08:54I'm starting to warm up
01:08:55on the Bucs a little bit.
01:08:57Wasn't high on them last year.
01:08:59Why?
01:09:00Didn't like how that season looked.
01:09:02Didn't like the little fiddle
01:09:03of the year.
01:09:05I know Middleton's had a couple of surgeries
01:09:07this offseason too
01:09:08and that's not what you want to see
01:09:09if you're them.
01:09:10I go back to Giannis.
01:09:12The motivation he's going to have
01:09:15two playoffs where he's been injured.
01:09:19Still has the ability to be the best player
01:09:22in the league.
01:09:24Coming off this Greece run,
01:09:25we'll see how he looks this summer.
01:09:27They had some low-key additions too.
01:09:29Tarjan Prince, good defender
01:09:31on the perimeter, can hit threes.
01:09:33Gary Trent Jr.
01:09:34Don't know how they got him.
01:09:35Good shooter.
01:09:37And they added DeJuan Wright,
01:09:38a good backup point guard there
01:09:40and they keep him Brook Lopez.
01:09:42They to me, I mean Jimmy,
01:09:44they blew the Celtics out twice last year
01:09:46at home in a big way.
01:09:49I think that's part of it too.
01:09:50It didn't matter.
01:09:51It really never mattered.
01:09:52They never were able to get out
01:09:53of the first round because
01:09:54of all the injuries.
01:09:55Who knows how that would have gone
01:09:56in the playoffs if they were able
01:09:57to see them.
01:09:58I got Milwaukee on my radar.
01:09:59The Thunder, of course,
01:10:01I'm high on in this year
01:10:02and you got to throw the Knicks
01:10:03in there as well.
01:10:05You took two of my teams.
01:10:07Well, you can do the same ones.
01:10:09Well, yeah, I was going to say
01:10:10New York, Philly, and OKC,
01:10:11just thinking off the top.
01:10:14I'm torn on Philly right now.
01:10:16I'm torn on them.
01:10:17I don't see them.
01:10:18You have to see Philly though.
01:10:19Yeah, exactly.
01:10:20I feel like you have to,
01:10:21but I still don't think
01:10:23they can beat the Celtics
01:10:25in a series.
01:10:26Yeah, we have to wait to see
01:10:27how they evolve,
01:10:28how they blossom and all that.
01:10:29Let's see Porzingis though.
01:10:31If it's just Horford out there
01:10:32against Embiid and there's no
01:10:33depth that emerges behind them,
01:10:35we'll see.
01:10:36But yeah, go ahead.
01:10:37Yeah, that works in their favor
01:10:38for sure.
01:10:39The fact that there will be
01:10:40no Porzingis and I'm guessing
01:10:41we'll get at least one matchup
01:10:43before Christmas.
01:10:45That'll be interesting.
01:10:47But yeah, New York has depth.
01:10:49I got to throw New York
01:10:50in there for sure.
01:10:51They're healthy this time,
01:10:52this year.
01:10:54Or they should be
01:10:55for the most part.
01:10:56They had like seven guys out
01:10:58and they still stretched
01:10:59that playoff run,
01:11:00which is very impressive
01:11:01if you ask me.
01:11:02So they'll be hungry for more.
01:11:03And then yeah,
01:11:04I'm with you Bobby.
01:11:05OKC.
01:11:06I just think the Thunder
01:11:07are on a really great path
01:11:08right now.
01:11:09They were certainly one of the
01:11:10team that just popped out of,
01:11:12it seemed like out of nowhere
01:11:13even though we all envisioned
01:11:14them getting it together.
01:11:16But I guess we didn't see it
01:11:17happening that quickly
01:11:18the way it did last year.
01:11:19So yeah, the fact that they
01:11:21added Muscle up front
01:11:24and Herrnstein,
01:11:25someone who New York loves.
01:11:28Like Knicks fans are going
01:11:29to really miss that dude.
01:11:30I think he solves a lot of
01:11:33those defensive issues,
01:11:34rebounding issues
01:11:35that really hurt them
01:11:36in their playoff run,
01:11:38which nearly reached
01:11:39the Western Conference finals.
01:11:40But yeah, those are my three teams.
01:11:41OKC, New York, and Philly.
01:11:44I guess you have to
01:11:45throw them in there.
01:11:46So those are my three.
01:11:47Who you got Noah?
01:11:50I was going to say,
01:11:51I think New York's the team
01:11:52that out of the East
01:11:53is the clear,
01:11:54just best assembled roster.
01:11:55And I thought they showed
01:11:56a lot of encouraging signs
01:11:57last playoff run
01:11:58despite being so limited.
01:11:59So I really do believe
01:12:00in New York.
01:12:01I think they could really
01:12:02challenge the Celtics.
01:12:03And then out of the West,
01:12:05I think we're still
01:12:06sleeping on Denver, honestly.
01:12:07I feel like there's the sense
01:12:09that because they got
01:12:11eliminated last year
01:12:12and they lost some role players
01:12:13and KCP is a great player.
01:12:15Westbrook on board.
01:12:17Yeah.
01:12:18And I don't know how
01:12:19that's going to fit.
01:12:20That's a little bit
01:12:21of a weird fit.
01:12:22But regardless,
01:12:23you have Jokic and Jamal Murray
01:12:24who had a really difficult
01:12:25playoff run last year.
01:12:26They were a really tough
01:12:27matchup for the Celtics
01:12:28before last year's playoffs.
01:12:30And I think they'll still
01:12:31be that this year.
01:12:32So that's just another team
01:12:34that's in the mix.
01:12:35But resonate a little bit
01:12:37with your book's comments.
01:12:38I just think that because
01:12:39that matchup never happened,
01:12:40Bobby, like we kind of
01:12:41assumed the Celtics
01:12:42would have been a cakewalk
01:12:44and they probably
01:12:45wouldn't have been.
01:12:46And the books also
01:12:47I feel like are being
01:12:48a little slept on
01:12:49because they didn't get
01:12:50better necessarily.
01:12:51But we never really saw
01:12:52them at full strength.
01:12:53So just some of the
01:12:54sleeper picks.
01:12:55I think it'll be
01:12:56everything has to line up
01:12:57to win a championship.
01:12:58Right.
01:12:59And so there's a lot
01:13:00of potential threats
01:13:01to the Celtics again.
01:13:02Like I think some people
01:13:03are getting maybe overly
01:13:04overly confident about
01:13:05how easy it is to repeat
01:13:06considering it really
01:13:07never happens.
01:13:08It doesn't happen
01:13:09very often at least.
01:13:10Hasn't happened
01:13:11the last six years.
01:13:12Who are you guys
01:13:13cheering on?
01:13:14Oh, well,
01:13:15I mean,
01:13:16the Knicks to me,
01:13:17that's the no brainer
01:13:18out of the East.
01:13:19They're clearly
01:13:20the next best team.
01:13:21When you look at the way
01:13:22not only the additions
01:13:23they made,
01:13:24but just the way
01:13:25they represented.
01:13:26They have a lot of
01:13:27two way versatile players
01:13:28now that,
01:13:29you know,
01:13:30in many ways
01:13:31they look a lot like Boston.
01:13:32I don't think
01:13:33they are quite as talented
01:13:34or as deep,
01:13:35but they're very much
01:13:36some clear similarities.
01:13:37Out West,
01:13:38I think OKC
01:13:39is only going to get better.
01:13:40And picking up
01:13:41Harlstein as Joe Sway
01:13:42pointed out
01:13:43was a major get.
01:13:44I thought that
01:13:45when we go back
01:13:46and look at like
01:13:47the top five,
01:13:48top 10 offseason signings,
01:13:49to me that has to be
01:13:50in that list.
01:13:51Huge.
01:13:52Because it addresses
01:13:53a very clear need
01:13:54for what they
01:13:55as a roster
01:13:56I thought
01:13:57didn't quite have
01:13:58as much of
01:13:59as they needed
01:14:00in order to get over
01:14:01the hump.
01:14:02And my third team,
01:14:03and I'm a little surprised
01:14:04I haven't heard them mention.
01:14:05You're going to say my team?
01:14:06Minnesota.
01:14:07Wow.
01:14:08No,
01:14:09you didn't.
01:14:10And here's why.
01:14:11First of all,
01:14:12it's not Phoenix
01:14:13because they have
01:14:14Devin Booker
01:14:15and Minnesota
01:14:16has Ant Edwards.
01:14:17But beyond
01:14:18Anthony Edwards,
01:14:19you got McDaniels,
01:14:20you've got Cat,
01:14:21you know,
01:14:22you've got
01:14:24six men a year,
01:14:25Nasri,
01:14:26you start looking
01:14:27at the pieces
01:14:28that they have,
01:14:29they're a pretty
01:14:30damn good team.
01:14:31And the bedrock
01:14:32of their team
01:14:33is defense.
01:14:34And we all know
01:14:35that at the end
01:14:36of the day,
01:14:37teams that typically
01:14:38if you're going to
01:14:39lean one way
01:14:40or the other,
01:14:41whether it's
01:14:42offense or defense,
01:14:43those who tend to be
01:14:44a little bit more
01:14:45defensively strong
01:14:46are the ones
01:14:47that typically
01:14:48find their way
01:14:49deep into the playoffs.
01:14:50And I do think
01:14:51Anthony Edwards
01:14:52is still a little bit
01:14:53burned about
01:14:54not getting further
01:14:55in the playoffs.
01:14:56I think he's going
01:14:57to come back
01:14:58with a different
01:14:59kind of focus.
01:15:00And this was the
01:15:01first year where
01:15:02it was clearly
01:15:03Anthony Edwards' team.
01:15:04And there's a bit
01:15:05of a transition
01:15:06that goes with that,
01:15:07particularly for
01:15:08someone like,
01:15:09you know,
01:15:10Cat,
01:15:11who for as long
01:15:12as he was a timber
01:15:13wolf,
01:15:14it was his team.
01:15:15And for him
01:15:16figuring out
01:15:17what his new role
01:15:18will be for
01:15:19Anthony Edwards,
01:15:20assuming that
01:15:21they're going
01:15:22to be a better
01:15:23team than they
01:15:24were last year.
01:15:25And I would not
01:15:26be surprised
01:15:27if at the end
01:15:28of the day,
01:15:29it's Boston and
01:15:30Minnesota in the
01:15:31NBA Finals.
01:15:32Would not be
01:15:33surprised at all,
01:15:34because I think
01:15:35Minnesota has a lot
01:15:36of the pieces
01:15:37to be that last
01:15:38team standing out
01:15:39west.
01:15:40And the Celtics,
01:15:41to me,
01:15:42are the team
01:15:43to beat,
01:15:44not just in the
01:15:45east,
01:15:46but just in
01:15:47the NBA and
01:15:48obviously as
01:15:49champions.
01:15:50I still don't feel
01:15:51as though anyone
01:15:52made enough moves
01:15:53to where you can
01:15:54put them on the
01:15:55same level,
01:15:56same plateaus as
01:15:57Celtics.
01:15:58And that says a
01:15:59lot about Brad
01:16:00Stephenson,
01:16:01their ability to
01:16:02just keep a good
01:16:03thing going,
01:16:04but more importantly,
01:16:05keep a good thing
01:16:06together.
01:16:07Looking back on it,
01:16:08I do kind of wish
01:16:09we saw that
01:16:10Minnesota-Boston
01:16:11series,
01:16:12especially the way
01:16:13the Dallas one
01:16:14went.
01:16:15Navs never
01:16:16competed much
01:16:17in that series at
01:16:18all.
01:16:19I mean,
01:16:20I don't know if
01:16:21you've heard that
01:16:22people are
01:16:23writing off a
01:16:24little bit,
01:16:25but they've
01:16:26they've battled
01:16:27the Celtics
01:16:28tough in the
01:16:29past.
01:16:30You know,
01:16:31I'm going to
01:16:32say,
01:16:33Bobby,
01:16:34my Pacers
01:16:35out in the
01:16:36east.
01:16:37They were the
01:16:38team that
01:16:39signed
01:16:40Andrew Nembhard,
01:16:41three years.
01:16:42Nembhard,
01:16:43who looked like
01:16:44MJ out there
01:16:45against the Celtics.
01:16:46They've got,
01:16:47they re-signed
01:16:48Andrew Nembhard
01:16:49against the Celtics.
01:16:50They're a young
01:16:51team.
01:16:52Miles Turner's
01:16:53been there forever.
01:16:54He's kind of like
01:16:55the heart and soul.
01:16:56They're one of those
01:16:57teams that definitely
01:16:58are.
01:16:59We've got James
01:17:00Wiseman.
01:17:01We'll see how that
01:17:02goes.
01:17:03They're on the
01:17:04up and up.
01:17:05Like when you
01:17:06talk about,
01:17:07like you're
01:17:08talking about
01:17:09the Bucs,
01:17:10Bobby,
01:17:11like they're
01:17:12kind of just
01:17:13wavering in the
01:17:14middle somewhere,
01:17:15like as far as
01:17:16trending,
01:17:17you know,
01:17:18if you're the
01:17:19leader of that
01:17:20team.
01:17:21It's a hard
01:17:22place to play.
01:17:23Indy,
01:17:24obviously.
01:17:25He just lives
01:17:26in dreamland.
01:17:27I love it.
01:17:28He's just on his
01:17:29own island.
01:17:30Let him sleep,
01:17:31Josue,
01:17:32let him sleep.
01:17:33Yeah,
01:17:34right,
01:17:35you're right.
01:17:36Okay,
01:17:37Halliburton,
01:17:38cool.
01:17:39Indy is going
01:17:40to be one of
01:17:41those teams that
01:17:42makes it difficult
01:17:43for the Celtics
01:17:44in the east.
01:17:45I'm not even
01:17:46sure if
01:17:47it's going to be
01:17:48difficult for
01:17:49the Celtics.
01:17:50It's going to
01:17:51be hard for
01:17:52the Celtics.
01:17:53They're going to
01:17:54have a similar
01:17:55difficult run I
01:17:56think that Denver
01:17:57had and it's
01:17:58going to come
01:17:59down to stamina
01:18:00in the end.
01:18:01Obviously,
01:18:02they're built to
01:18:03win another one,
01:18:04but we'll see.
01:18:05But in the
01:18:06east,
01:18:07you know,
01:18:08the Celtics are
01:18:09going to have
01:18:10to go through
01:18:11the east before
01:18:12they have to
01:18:13worry about
01:18:14anyone out
01:18:15there.
01:18:16But I think we
01:18:17all kind of look
01:18:18at Philly and
01:18:19just kind of like
01:18:20brush them off a
01:18:21little bit.
01:18:22It's funny though.
01:18:23It's funny.
01:18:24Yeah,
01:18:25exactly.
01:18:26It makes,
01:18:27yeah,
01:18:28the rivalry is
01:18:29fun,
01:18:30but watch out
01:18:31for Indy.
01:18:32They're a
01:18:33running gun team.
01:18:34They're going to
01:18:35try to run you
01:18:36off the floor.
01:18:37They're going to
01:18:38prance and dance
01:18:39like we see
01:18:40them do,
01:18:41and if they can
01:18:42stay healthy,
01:18:43they're going to
01:18:44be OK.
01:18:45I was
01:18:46overly obsessed
01:18:47with Miami last
01:18:48year,
01:18:49and so now I
01:18:50have to not
01:18:51bring them up.
01:18:52I was so
01:18:53concerned about
01:18:54them heading into
01:18:55the playoffs.
01:18:56They are always
01:18:57in my mind.
01:18:58So I'll put
01:18:59them on a
01:19:00momentum.
01:19:01And I was
01:19:02going to say,
01:19:03Sherrod,
01:19:04I was going to
01:19:05mention Minnesota,
01:19:06but I just
01:19:07didn't want to
01:19:08bring up Anthony
01:19:09Edwards again.
01:19:10I knew that
01:19:11would entail
01:19:12the whole
01:19:13tough last year at the toughest.
01:19:15We're Denver, Minnesota, Oklahoma again,
01:19:20Indiana, as well as Milwaukee.
01:19:24Yeah, Milwaukee.
01:19:26They blew them out bad in those two home games.
01:19:29I was up there for one of them.
01:19:31Well, one of them was like a schedule loss, I feel like.
01:19:33Yeah, it was.
01:19:34It was like a fifth game in seven days or something like that.
01:19:36It really does have a decent roster though now.
01:19:38I mean, we'll see.
01:19:39And they played the Celtics tough early last year.
01:19:42Maxi is a beast.
01:19:43So, I mean, he's only getting better.
01:19:45You look at players who are going to get better
01:19:47and you kind of have to project their teams to be better.
01:19:48So that's why I say Indy.
01:19:49That's why, like, when you look at Philly,
01:19:51there's a couple of guys that are trending upwards.
01:19:53You know, when you look at like Minnesota,
01:19:55like all those guys are trending upwards.
01:19:57So those are the teams you have to mention.
01:20:00That's why you got to mention Philly though, Jimmy, right?
01:20:02Because you're talking about a player who's getting better,
01:20:04an all-star caliber player in Maxi.
01:20:05And then you add a Paul George, who's, you know.
01:20:08He's a corn toss.
01:20:10He's a corn toss.
01:20:11That's true.
01:20:12He's who he is.
01:20:13But when there's Maxi there though,
01:20:15it's sort of, it looks better than it did for the Bucs
01:20:18last summer when they got Lillard.
01:20:20You know, because it was like,
01:20:21okay, you replaced Drew with the all-star,
01:20:25an aging one at that, but you still lost Drew.
01:20:30Right, right.
01:20:31Who doesn't defend?
01:20:31And you never made up for that loss in Drew Holiday.
01:20:34So this one's a little different, but we'll see.
01:20:36Interesting.
01:20:37Yeah, the GM said no regrets about that trade
01:20:39in the NFL, which I guess you have to say,
01:20:41given that they're running that team forward.
01:20:42Doc's got some new assistants.
01:20:44We'll see how that goes.
01:20:45I already have one of those new assistants, yep.
01:20:48Yep, and I like the three guys they brought in.
01:20:50I'm stunned they were able to get Trent.
01:20:51That's a good move, and Lopez still there.
01:20:53Middleton's got to stay healthy.
01:20:55He was solid last year, but two ankle surgeries this summer.
01:20:59It's just a kill for him physically right now.
01:21:01Especially for a guy who's not the most quick-footed,
01:21:05even when healthy.
01:21:07Yeah, their defense is a real question.
01:21:09And there's still some pieces to move around this summer.
01:21:12There's a bunch of free agents still out there.
01:21:14You can look them all up.
01:21:15We'll see where those guys end up.
01:21:16Tyus Jones, probably the headliner among them.
01:21:19Plenty of trades to happen.
01:21:20There's a lot of marketing goes somewhere.
01:21:22So still some things floating around this summer,
01:21:24but the work's mostly done.
01:21:25We pretty much know who's going to be playing
01:21:27for who next year, especially on the Celtics.
01:21:30So we'll try to come up with some stuff to talk about
01:21:32as the summer progresses.
01:21:33Fortunately, we do have the Olympics,
01:21:34which is going to get us through August.
01:21:37That's not a bad tease, though, right there, you know?
01:21:38There you go.
01:21:39Some Larry Marketing talk, you know?
01:21:40He's on the market.
01:21:42So we got USA, Serbia tomorrow.
01:21:45Good way to start it off.
01:21:47Real opponent, MVP on the opposing side
01:21:50for the Celtics tomorrow.
01:21:5211-15 Eastern, so you're going to have to get up early
01:21:55if you're out West,
01:21:56but we'll have some sort of coverage here.
01:21:59Thanks for stopping by, Jimmy.
01:22:01Pleasant surprise on this Saturday.
01:22:03Crashing the show. Glad to be here.
01:22:05I like that.
01:22:06Back to the family again.
01:22:07Hey, Shirod. Bobby, I'll see you in Paris.
01:22:10Yes, I'm taking off.
01:22:11That's wild.
01:22:12You guys got to send some good stuff, though.
01:22:15There you go.
01:22:16Fucking hat, Bobby, in Europe.
01:22:17I don't know.
01:22:18Do I have to wear one of those?
01:22:19What are those French hats?
01:22:20Maybe I should get one of those.
01:22:22Yo, you should.
01:22:23I don't know what I'm wearing.
01:22:24I don't know what I'm wearing.
01:22:24You should. Get a blue one.
01:22:29The internet lasts forever, Bobby.
01:22:30Just remember that.
01:22:33Thank you, Shirod, for being here.
01:22:34Jimmy hopping on agenda free.
01:22:36I like it.
01:22:37Same to you, Bobby.
01:22:39That's my life, bro.
01:22:40And shout out to Noah.
01:22:42She's starting a podcast with CLNS Media.
01:22:45Yes, sir.
01:22:46Welcome to the family.
01:22:48Starting soon.
01:22:49When's the first one coming out, Noah?
01:22:52Hopefully on Monday,
01:22:54depending on when my bus back from New York is.
01:22:56Look out for that.
01:22:57Subscribe.
01:22:58So everyone who's got the We Got Boston shirts,
01:23:02that's pretty much an advertisement right there.
01:23:03There you go.
01:23:05I was wearing the You Got Boston shirt
01:23:07on my train to New York.
