Celebrations and commemorations are held in Cyprus on the 50th anniversary of the Turkish
00:07
invasion.
00:11
EU High Representative Josep Borrell has visited Latvia in one of his last working trips in
00:17
his role.
00:21
It's a day of both sorrow and celebration in Cyprus as the island marks 50 years since
00:27
the invasion of Turkish forces in 1974.
00:33
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has attended a military parade in northern Cyprus
00:39
where Turkish Cypriots are celebrating what they consider their freedom and the establishment
00:44
of their breakaway state.
00:47
But in the south the day is sombre as commemorations take place and wreaths are laid in remembrance
00:53
of those who lost their lives in the conflict.
00:57
A memorial event will be held at the Presidential Palace in Nikosia which will be attended by
01:03
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
01:08
It's the first time a Greek Prime Minister will be present at the service.
01:13
Cyprus was split in two after Ankara invaded the island in July 1974 following a coup by
01:20
the Greek military junta which toppled the legitimate Cyprus government.
01:24
A UN buffer zone has been in place ever since.
01:31
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has visited
01:37
Latvia in one of his last working trips in his role.
01:41
Borrell met with Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Brasa and Minister of Defence
01:46
Andris Spruds before taking a tour of a military base near Riga.
01:52
While in Latvia he discussed the importance of standing united in the face of Russian
01:56
aggression and stressed the need for more and quicker support for Ukraine.
02:02
His trip follows his visit to Estonia on Friday where he met caretaker Prime Minister Kaya
02:08
Kalas who is also his designated successor as High Representative for Foreign Affairs
02:13
and Security Policy.
02:15
He then toured the Tapa army base with Estonia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Margis Zagna.
02:22
Borrell described Estonia as a good example of a country committed to providing military
02:28
deterrence against Russia and increasing defence capabilities.
02:33
He said the European Union has a strategic responsibility to work together more and enhance
02:39
its defensive readiness.
02:43
Police have clashed with protesters in La Rochelle where demonstrations are taking place
02:48
against an artificial water reservoir project in the area.
02:54
One officer is reportedly suffering with burns while five protesters are being treated for
02:59
minor injuries.
03:02
Six people have also been taken into police custody.
03:07
The artificial reservoirs have received backlash for being a non-permanent solution and there
03:12
are concerns about their ecological impact.
03:20
Four boats carrying more than 300 migrants have docked at the Spanish island of Gran
03:24
Canaria in less than 24 hours.

03:34
Another of the boats was escorted to port by the Maritime Safety and Rescue Society
03:39
after being spotted around 15 kilometers southeast of the archipelago.
03:45
That boat was carrying 145 people, all of sub-Saharan African origin.
03:51

03:55
Islands jumped by 160 percent between January and July compared to the same period last
04:01
year.

The route from Africa to the Canary Islands, which are located off Morocco's southern
04:06
coast, is the fastest-growing migration route to Europe.
04:11

04:16
from January to May compared to a year ago.
