00:00Every news organization across the country was now interested in Ted Bundy.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at secrets about serial killers that will probably never get uncovered.
00:10Killer contacts local press. He includes a strange, three-part coded message, or cipher.
00:18Where are Dean Quarles' victims buried?
00:21Who can murder dozens of young men and bury several of them in unknown locations?
00:26Apparently, the Candyman.
00:28Known as the Candyman because of his family's sweet shop that used to be across from a school off 22nd Street.
00:36Dean Quarles, who is sometimes called the Candyman because he once sold candy,
00:40was behind a series of heinous killings in the early 1970s, referred to as the Houston Mass Murders.
00:46Nearly 30 boys and young men disappeared, never to be seen again.
00:50Their buried remains found only after Quarles was dead.
00:54In executing these crimes, Quarles was assisted by two teenagers named David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley.
01:00The spree came to an end after Henley killed Quarles and confessed everything to the police.
01:05While 28 of Quarles' victims are officially accounted for,
01:09there's a possibility that several more are buried in undisclosed locations.
01:13However, as these murders happened so long ago, discovering any additional bodies may be unlikely.
01:19But in the past few weeks, there have been new efforts to find additional victims.
01:24No bodies have been found yet, but the group leading the search efforts plans to look in other locations in the months ahead.
01:32Is there really a Manchester Pusher?
01:34The Manchester Pusher story lies somewhere between forensic hypothesis and urban legend.
01:40For years, a disturbing rumor has swirled around Manchester.
01:45A serial killer dubbed the Pusher is stalking the city's canals.
01:49Since around 2007, numerous bodies have been found in the waterways of Greater Manchester in England.
01:56Some believe these deaths are mere coincidences, but others suspect foul play,
02:00speculating that an anonymous individual is responsible for pushing people into the canals.
02:0585 people have died in Manchester's waterways in the past six years.
02:10In 28 of the cases, there is no clear explanation as to what happened.
02:15People have consistently attempted to put these ideas to rest,
02:18attributing the tragedies to accidental falls or natural causes.
02:22But a few key instances, such as a cyclist who allegedly encountered the Pusher in 2018,
02:28hint at the existence of a real perpetrator.
02:31In any case, the Manchester Pusher concept remains a controversial and largely speculative topic.
02:37Unless the police can prove there isn't a serial killer,
02:40every time a body is found or turns up in water, the rumors and the speculations will continue.
02:48Why did the Bible Belt Strangler target redheads?
02:51The redhead murders spanned from the late 70s to the early 90s.
02:55Homicides have become known as the redhead murders.
02:59The case remains unsolved, but a couple of factors have linked the victims.
03:04Firstly, the majority of the killings took place in the so-called Bible Belt,
03:08which has earned the suspect the Bible Belt Strangler moniker.
03:12But even more notable is that almost all of the murdered women had red, if not reddish hair.
03:18Public attention just really drew to this idea of one man killing all of these redheads.
03:24This pattern raises intriguing questions.
03:26If these incidents are indeed connected,
03:29why did the Bible Belt Strangler specifically go after red-haired women?
03:33Was it mere coincidence?
03:34Or was the Strangler prejudiced against red-haired people?
03:38It's very likely we may never know.
03:40How are we going to get there? I don't know.
03:41But we're not going to stop trying to connect anything that will connect.
03:45Did the monster of Mangones drink blood?
03:48The story of the monster of the Mangones is extremely mysterious,
03:52and many key points about the killings are yet unknown.
03:55But there is a creepy issue that no one can ignore.
03:59Was this monster a real-life vampire?
04:01Or maybe a sufferer of Renfield syndrome, a condition marked by a thirst for blood?
04:07Approximately 38 associated murders took place in Cali, Colombia in the 60s and 70s,
04:12and they were pretty grisly.
04:14In fact, it's been said that the killer, whose identity was never determined,
04:18liked to extract and drink the victim's blood.
04:21For a fictionalized version of the monster's tale,
04:24check out the 1982 horror film Pura Sangre.
04:28Who, if anyone, was the Paraquat murderer?
04:31In 1985, a strange pattern of poisonings affected central and western Japan.
04:36At least 12 people died and over 30 more became ill
04:40when drinks left in or near vending machines were laced with Paraquat,
04:43a highly toxic herbicide.
04:46Was this a pattern of unfortunate accidents
04:48or did a threatening figure in the shadows plot the entire thing?
04:52Despite extensive investigations,
04:54police could not figure out why these deaths happened,
04:56how they happened, or who may have been behind them.
04:59If there was indeed a perpetrator, they were never identified,
05:03and no arrests were made.
05:05Did the Atlanta Ripper have racial motives?
05:08Around the turn of the 20th century,
05:10the murders of 15 women plunged Georgia's capital into a state of terror.
05:15The gory nature of the killings and the fact that all the victims were black women
05:19led many to suspect that the murders were connected.
05:22Given the racial tension of the era,
05:24some wonder if prejudice inspired the so-named Atlanta Ripper.
05:27Incidentally, one witness claimed to have caught a glimpse of the killer
05:31and described him as black, casting doubt on the racism theory.
05:34Either way, since investigators have been stumped on this one for over a century,
05:39we may never know whether racism had a role in the Ripper's choice of victims.
05:43Who burned down the Gein House?
05:45An unsettling obsession with his mother
05:47and a penchant for building furniture out of dead bodies
05:50have made Ed Gein one of the most disturbing serial killers ever.
05:53The twisted killer was a quiet loner named Ed Gein.
05:57Hidden inside the 51-year-old's rural farmhouse was a ghoulish treasure trove.
06:03Gein's eccentricities have inspired many a fictional villain,
06:06from Psycho's Norman Bates to Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
06:10Anyone who's heard Gein's story knows that his home,
06:13a secluded Wisconsin farmhouse,
06:15was full of dark paraphernalia that he fashioned himself.
06:18In 1958, the property that Gein had lived in was due to be auctioned off.
06:23And I think the last thing that local people wanted was for this to become
06:27some kind of shrine, some kind of attraction for people who were morbidly fascinated.
06:33A few months after his arrest, the house mysteriously caught fire
06:37mere days before his possessions were set to be auctioned off.
06:40Although some have blamed a nearby garbage fire,
06:43many believe the property was destroyed by arson.
06:46But of course, we'll never know for sure.
06:48A lot of the neighbors weren't too happy with having talk of it
06:51being turned into a museum of sorts.
06:55But there were a lot of stories.
07:00Anyway, it's gone. People still kept coming, though.
07:02Did Jeffrey Dahmer's father also have dark impulses?
07:06Sometimes called the Milwaukee Monster,
07:08Jeffrey Dahmer was infamous for his gruesome acts,
07:11not to mention unusual tastes.
07:13Jeffrey Dahmer was responsible for killing more than a dozen people.
07:17The majority of those murders happened in an apartment near the Marquette campus.
07:21There's some debate as to whether or not Dahmer's father, Lionel,
07:24had a hand in his son's actions, not in the crimes themselves,
07:28but perhaps in the development of his psyche.
07:30In his 1994 memoir titled A Father's Story,
07:34Lionel admits to having harbored his own thoughts about hurting others.
07:37I mean, we're all on a continuum.
07:40We all do bad things. We all sin.
07:44He was at the extreme of this continuum.
07:46That said, Lionel, who died in 2023,
07:49would never definitively learn whether he shared any troubling fantasies with Jeffrey.
07:54Moreover, since Lionel is not known to have acted on these thoughts,
07:57it's unclear just how much they could have influenced his son's actions.
08:01I just wish I had been a little bit,
08:04had a little bit more smarts to feel
08:10that I should be putting some of that effort with my son.
08:13The Zodiac Killer's Codes.
08:15The case of the elusive Zodiac Killer has baffled law enforcement for over 50 years.
08:21In the 1960s, the Zodiac Killer terrorizes the San Francisco Bay Area.
08:27You're just helpless. You're like an animal.
08:29Despite extensive media coverage, nobody is sure of who he is,
08:33his true number of victims, and numerous other factors.
08:37Central to the crimes are a series of letters allegedly written by the killer.
08:41In these notes, he not only taunted the investigators for failing to apprehend him,
08:46but also included complex cryptograms that he claims reveal his identity.
08:50Killer contacts local press.
08:52He includes a strange three-part coded message, or cipher.
08:56Two of the ciphers were cracked in 1969 and 2020 respectively,
09:01but the other two have yet to be uncovered.
09:03Do these remaining clues point to the truth,
09:06or are they simply meant to prolong this wild goose chase?
09:09Your guess is as good as ours.
09:12I'd love it if someday we found out who this guy was,
09:15and had some idea of what motivated him and why he did it.
09:19I really don't think we'll ever know.

09:37Ted Bundy's actual kill count.
09:39Ted Bundy, the ultimate lady killer, literally.
09:43Ted Bundy was one of the most prolific and violent serial killers in American history.
09:49The psychopath with movie star good looks
09:52would prove to the world that not even jail could contain his murderous obsession.
09:57Bundy is often counted among the coldest and most heartless murderers in American history.
10:02In fact, he may be the first serial killer you think of when you hear the term.
10:07But despite his notoriety, Bundy's exact body count has never been determined.
10:11Ted awaits his execution at a Florida state prison
10:15when he suddenly begins to reveal the details of his horrific crimes.
10:19Although he confessed to killing around 30 women,
10:22he implied on multiple occasions that the number was a lot higher.
10:26Much like the Zodiac Killer, Bundy seems to enjoy confusing the police
10:30and keeping them guessing as to the full scope of his misdeeds.
10:33We may never be sure of his kill count, but one thing is certain.
10:38Bundy's deceit was unparalleled.
10:40We went up there 15 years later and dug up the whole mountainside
10:45and didn't find the skull.
10:47Whether he actually did or not, I don't know.
10:50He lies, you know.
10:51Which of these unanswered serial killer questions has you most intrigued?
10:55Let us know in the comments.
10:56Bundy volunteered to assist Robert Keppel in forming a criminal profile
11:01for the then-at-large Green River Serial Killer.
