00:00Sean, lovely to meet you. I was at the fan event. It was wild. Did you feel like a rockstar?

00:07I did. I mean, I'm a little bit deluded today. I told my daughters and wife that I feel like

00:13a rockstar. They laughed at me, so I was instantly brought down to earth.

00:17But it was such an amazing event, wasn't it?

00:19Yeah, that energy was amazing. I mean, you know this in general when you come into the

00:24MCU and you get the privilege of doing a Deadpool and Wolverine story. I always knew

00:30it was the chance of a lifetime and the privilege of my career thus far, but you felt it in

00:35that room. You felt it in your bones and you felt it in the cheers. It was rowdy and it

00:41was visceral and just fantastic.

00:44I mean, I'm Scottish, so we've got the best crowds in the world, but even for me last

00:47night I was like, this is popping in here. I was like, I want to go on a night out now.

00:51No, it was good. And I'm told I wasn't able to stick around through the screening of the

00:55footage, but I'm told that that energy carried through right through.

00:59Absolutely. Now, listen, I've got quite an important question for you because I actually

01:03did dress up as Deadpool. I touted it as one of my movies to look out for in 2024. However,

01:10I couldn't breathe and I had to take the mask off.

01:13Are you wondering about Ryan's oxygen levels?

01:16This is what I need to know because I asked Rob, does he actually wear, is it him in the

01:20costume? Definitely.

01:21Yeah. I mean, it's tough. And if I would do a bunch of takes in a row or we would improvise

01:28a long scene, Ryan would take, well, we had a trick. First of all, the eyes, they're magnetic.

01:34So what we would do, if it was just a short break, like three, four minutes, he would

01:39pop out the eyes because he said that just having the eye holes would allow some oxygen

01:46into the mask. And then if it was going to be more than a five or 10 minute break, he

01:51would take the whole mask off. And perhaps like yourself last night, he would be dripping

01:55in sweat.

01:56Yeah. I mean, I wasn't thankfully dripping last night in sweat because I thought I didn't

02:00want to wear the costume because I didn't want to upstage Ryan.

02:03Well that's generous of you.

02:04You know, so I was a bit more low-key.

02:06Yeah. It's like you're both well-dressed and considerate.

02:09Yeah. Do you know what I mean?

02:10Yeah. His ego is so fragile. It's so delicate. So thank you for sparing him that anguish.

02:17Now you say the eyes are magnetic. So do you mean magnetic as in, like, if he looked at

02:22me, I'd be like... I mean, I probably would anyway if Ryan looked at me.

02:26That, by the way, that was comedy. And I work in comedy. That was impressive.

02:30Oh, stop it.

02:31It's not that they're magnetic outwardly or to other objects. They're magnetic to the

02:38portal in which they sit. So like if you took the black eyes and you got close, they'd go

02:46Right, I see.

02:47So they affix internally, not outwardly.

02:50Something to think about.

02:51Yeah.

02:52For the next one.

02:53Oh, well that's a whole other storyline. Deadpool can't control his behaviour because his magnetic

02:58eyes are getting him into awkward situations.

03:00But it definitely is Ryan acting in the suit. It's not a stunt double. It's him.

03:04Oh, no. It's always him. He's incredibly protective of this character. The only exception is there's

03:12a few dance moves during a certain sequence.

03:15Outstanding, by the way.

03:16And I would love to tell the world that was all Ryan, but it was only partially Ryan because

03:23there has to be limits on his talent. You know, it's enough that he's that handsome

03:28and he's that good a writer and he's that funny and smart and he does pretty well in

03:32business. Let's not also let him be a sexy, amazing dancer.

03:36He would break the internet. It's just too much.

03:38Too much.

03:40Do you know what I loved? The innuendos. And I am not a waffler by any matter of means.

03:45I love a bit of dark, sarcastic humour as well because I'm naturally being Scottish.

03:49But the innuendos, even some of them, I was like...

03:52Give me an example of one. I know it's a spoiler.

03:55Okay, well if we're going to go there, brace yourself. This is the time to switch off if

03:59you don't want to hear colourful language. Pegging. The pegging joke got me. I was not

04:04expecting it.

04:05I'm going to admit something mortifying.

04:09What are you going to say? This is a safe space.

04:11Okay, it's a safe space. Just you, me and whoever's watching.

04:14So when Ryan and I were writing, we would do writing sessions. Sometimes we would improvise

04:19together and we would write it down. But very often one of us would go, give me the laptop.

04:23Just give me the laptop. And we'd sit in silence while one of us wrote something and then turn

04:27the laptop. Ryan does that one day. Turns the laptop and embarrassingly I said,

04:35What's pegging?

04:37And then we went to the internet.

04:40Oh no.

04:41That's mistake number one.

04:43I mean...

04:44That's mistake number one through ten.

04:46Did Ryan know what it was?

04:48Oh yeah, Ryan wrote the joke. Ryan knows all the language.

04:52But this Canadian boy didn't. This Canadian father of four.

04:57So I am filthy now. This movie has corrupted me.

05:01It has made me filthy.

05:04I'm unbearable and it's Ryan to blame.

05:07I love that. Do you know, that's what the gays have done to me.

05:10Yeah, yeah.

05:12But listen, how amazing was it getting to share this with the fans?

05:15Because I've never felt so much anticipation and love for a movie like this.

05:23Making a movie's hard. I've made about 15 of them.

05:26You work so hard on all of them.

05:28I worked harder on this one than any I've ever made.

05:32But every time in normal life you make a movie,

05:34you don't know if people are going to show up.

05:36The outcome is always a crapshoot.

05:39It's luck and you have no control over it.

05:42So to work this hard, but on something where you see and feel and hear.

05:47And last night in that room, you could feel it in your bones

05:50that the excitement is there, the want and anticipation is there.

05:55That is an incredible privilege.

05:59And we've worked so hard to satisfy that hunger.

06:02And I think and I hope you'll agree that we pulled it off.

06:06Oh, absolutely. From the 35 minutes?

06:08Well, if you love 35, where do you get 125?

06:11To be honest, I was just there for the dance moves.

06:13Like, that sold me right away.

06:15I tried to sort of bring it to a serious energy there

06:18just because I just had a moment there thinking,

06:20we're talking about pegging.

06:22I never thought in my career I would be interviewing an incredible director

06:26and asking about pegging jokes.

06:28I'm the director of Cheaper by the Dozen.

06:31I'm the director of Big Fat Liar and Night at the Museum.

06:35I have no business writing jokes about pegging and other filth.

06:41And yet, I'm never going back.

06:44No, I've been liberated.

06:47But yes, I've come a long way from my family comedy, Wholesome Beginnings.

06:52But what I do love about Deadpool, though,

06:54is it breaks the fourth wall so well.

06:58I know it's a big part of what I love.

07:00Yes, I think it's a big part.

07:02They think it's the language.

07:04They think it's the action, the violence.

07:06That self-aware humor is so funny.

07:11And it's smart funny because you're commenting on culture.

07:15You're commenting on the movie while you're in the movie.

07:19And as a writer, as a director,

07:22that was absolutely the most fun tool to use.

07:28Well, listen, if you ever need some help with the comedy,

07:31for anything else that you do,

07:32now that you've come to the dark side,

07:34I'm available.

07:35Well, I know.

07:36You're good in a mask, as I saw,

07:37but you're even better with the physical comedy in real life.
