00:00It's the 13th of July in Butler, Pennsylvania.

00:08Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at a rally.

00:11It's only days until he plans to accept the official Republican nomination.

00:16He's just minutes into his speech when shots are fired.

00:19Take a look at what happened.

00:27Trump got hit, but survived.

00:33Someone tried to assassinate him in broad daylight.

00:36Here is how it unfolded.

00:47By the time this video is published, new details might have emerged.

00:54It's a hot, sweltering early evening as tens of thousands gather here to see Trump.

00:59Pennsylvania is one of six vital swing states that will help secure the win in the next

01:03presidential election.

01:05Butler skews heavily Republican, and it is a blue-collar town.

01:18He is surrounded by supporters.

01:20Most are sitting or standing in front of the stage.

01:23Some sit on the bleachers, center, left, and right.

01:26Trump's support staff and security, including Secret Service agents, are right at the stage.

01:32Behind him are three large buildings.

01:35On the roof of the building on the far left and on the far right are Secret Service snipers.

01:39They are constantly scanning the surroundings, looking for threats.

01:43They can be seen in this video filmed by a crowd member.

01:53Trump begins with his speech.

01:55Things seem normal.

01:57He turns to the right and points at a chart showing statistics on border crossings.

02:01At the same time, several people in the crowd notice a man with a gun on the roof of a building

02:06close by.

02:12All of a sudden, bullets start flying.

02:17One even gets captured on camera.

02:20Another building, about 400 feet or 120 meters north of the stage.

02:24The shots are coming from here, on the roof.

02:28The gunman is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

02:31He is armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

02:35The gun was legally purchased by his father.

02:37First, he apparently fires a round of three shots.

02:44Trump reaches up with his hand.

02:46The first bullet pierces the upper part of his right ear.

02:49He will later say that turning over to the right at that exact moment prevented the bullet

02:53from hitting him right in the head.

02:55He ducks down behind the podium and within 3-4 seconds after the first shot, Secret Service

03:00agents swarm the former president and shield him with their bodies.

03:03Crooks opens fire again, immediately, with five more shots.

03:10Right before the first shot by Crooks, one of the snipers on the left roof behind Trump

03:14seems to detect the gunman and prepares to return fire.

03:21Some outlets report that these snipers killed Crooks, while the Secret Service confirmed

03:25its personnel neutralized the shooter.

03:27We could not corroborate that it was in fact these specific agents.

03:30The gunman also hit spectators on the bleachers.

03:33One man died, 50-year-old Cory Comperdor.

03:36Two others were critically injured.

03:38With Trump's microphone still on, we can hear the tense exchanges among the agents.

03:49About 42 seconds after Crooks opened fire, they confirmed the shooter is down.

04:04They prepare to escort him to an armored vehicle.

04:24In about 75 seconds after ducking to the ground, Trump raises his fist.

04:28He is mouthing the words, fight, fight, fight.

04:31The resulting photos immediately travel around the entire world.

04:38The crowd starts to chant for the former president as he leaves the stage, bleeding.

04:45Trump is then rushed to a hospital.

04:47Later that night, he is flown to New Jersey.

04:50He appears to be well.

04:56There are a lot of questions we don't have an answer to right now.

04:59Why were the forces unable to prevent the attack?

05:02Analysis on X suggests that at least the snipers on the roof behind Trump were likely scouting

05:07for dangers further away, with this rooftop possibly falling into the responsibility of

05:12other law enforcement agents.

05:14We were unable to corroborate that.

05:16Why couldn't armed men climb up on this building?

05:19What was Crooks' motive?

05:21The gunman had no criminal history and Pennsylvania's public court records.

05:24The New York Times found a voter registration record for Crooks.

05:27It shows that he was registered as a Republican.

05:29They also found that he donated $15 to a liberal voter turnout group through a Democratic donation

05:34platform in 2021.

05:36He was a kitchen worker and had a membership at a local shooting club.

05:40The FBI found suspicious devices in both his car and home.

05:43They are being evaluated by the agency at the time of this recording.

05:47The investigation is ongoing and new information is being published by the minute.

05:52President Biden and various leaders around the world condemn the attack and political

05:55violence at large.

05:57The picture of Trump, bloodied but defiant, with a raised fist in front of the American

06:01flag, will surely become a powerful symbol in his re-election campaign.
