England's Euros heartbreak: back-to-back final defeats

It was Groundhog Day as Gareth Southgate became the first manager in Euros history to lose two finals.

00:00The last finals, yeah, it's the first European Championship final I've ever managed.

00:09They can see what it's meant to the whole country tonight,

00:12and what it's meant to the fans in the stadium.

00:14I've never known the new Wembley like this.

00:16This is once in a generation, we may never see it again.

00:20The Italians are running scant.

00:22It's going to be a special day, but of course there's going to be a winner and a loser,

00:26so we've got to make sure we're on that winning side.

00:34You bring out the very best of England and we are all behind you, the whole country is behind you.

00:38We're in a final and we're here to win.

00:41Now we want to go and bring the trophy home for everybody.

00:43The new Wembley, when we started three, four years ago,

00:47we had people throwing paper aeroplanes, they weren't behind the team.

00:50Now the energy in the stadium is fantastic and that's so important for the players.

01:06We didn't try and win the game. We went 1-0 up and we didn't try and win the game.

01:19It's anybody's game, do you know what I mean?

01:21The penalty takers are my call, we've worked on them in training.

01:25Tonight it hasn't gone for us.

01:27You bring them on at the end to take the penalties and they haven't kicked a football.

01:30It's like the history of England sometimes seems to be losing on penalties.

01:33He's not on his own, he's such a super boy.

01:39We wanted to give everybody one more night that would continue the biggest party ever.

01:43We haven't been able to do that, but I hope that we've given everybody some incredible memories

01:49and the players especially should feel very proud of what they've done.

01:57If I didn't get everything right, apologies for that, but we'll try and do better this week.

02:15We weren't beaten other than in penalties in that period.

02:18It's an incredible run.

02:20None of that matters because we had an opportunity to win and we haven't been able to take it.
