00:43Thank you very much, and welcome to the second half of the show by Peter, Paul and Mary on stage at the Sydney Stadium.
00:55And I believe you'll enjoy this half even more as we meet each performer as a soloist.
01:01Ladies and gentlemen, to a capacity crowd here at Sydney Stadium, we proudly present Peter, Paul and Mary.
01:21Ladies and gentlemen, to a capacity crowd here at Sydney Stadium, we proudly present Peter, Paul and Mary.
01:41If you have time
01:46I've just received my military papers
01:54to go to war
01:58before Wednesday
02:02But if I still don't grow up
02:07I don't want to go to war
02:12I'm not on earth
02:17to kill the poor people
02:23Don't be angry
02:27but I have to tell you
02:31that wars are foolishness
02:35The world has had enough
02:41Since I was born
02:45I've seen brothers die
02:49I've seen fathers leave
02:53and children cry
02:58Mothers have suffered too much
03:02when others are sheltered
03:06and living in their homes
03:10despite the bloodshed
03:14There are prisoners
03:19whose souls have been stolen
03:25whose women have been stolen
03:32and whose hearts have been broken
03:38Tomorrow morning
03:42I'll close the door
03:46We are animals
03:50I'll go down the path
03:56I'll give my life
04:00on earth and on the wave
04:04from old to the new world
04:08and I'll tell people
04:14to enjoy life
04:18to get away from misery
04:22Men are all brothers
04:27Young people from all countries
04:31If you have to pour your blood
04:36go and pour yours
04:42Gentlemen, your voices
04:50Gentlemen, your voices
04:56If you pursue me
05:00tell your gendarmes
05:04that I'll be without a soul
05:08and that they can shoot
05:13and that they can shoot
05:43I want to introduce Mary to you
05:45A few moments after that
05:46Mary will introduce Dick to you
05:47and a few moments after that
05:48Dick will introduce you to each other
05:50and we'll have a very complex
05:52sociological interaction pattern form
05:57Now, instead of singing a song
06:02I want to mention something about that song
06:04that I just sang
06:05Sometimes I, well in America
06:07I introduce it because I know that
06:09very few people in the audience
06:11understand anything of it
06:12I assume, hold it, that's enough
06:16Right, I assume that you understood
06:18most of the words
06:19I just want to briefly tell you
06:20that it's a song that was forbidden
06:21on the French radio
06:22called Le Déserteur
06:25because it's a very violent
06:28anti-violent, I don't know
06:30It's a very heartfelt plea against war
06:34So, be that as it may
06:35Let me go on
06:36Tell you, instead of singing a song
06:38Act You Now
06:40I want to sing a song that answers
06:42the accusations that have been
06:44leveled at me by my friends
06:49When we graduated from college
06:51my friends didn't go into folk music
06:55My friends went into corporations
06:59And in these corporations
07:00they became whole new people
07:02They began to go to meetings
07:05to run things up flag poles
07:07to see who saluted them
07:09They began to wear button-down everythings
07:15And I just don't belong to
07:18a corporation of thousands of people
07:21like General Motors
07:24I belong to a group of four people
07:26and it's different
07:28They look at me and laugh
07:30and I feel sorry for me
07:35And I feel sorry for me too
07:37You know, I want to belong
07:39I don't
07:41But I can
07:43If you will be the corporation
07:47All we have to do is divide into factions
07:50that will make war upon each other
07:55We'll divide right down the center
07:56of the auditorium
07:58Everybody to my right
08:01You are in the in-group
08:08Everybody to my left
08:10You're in the out-group
08:16You have to have spirit
08:17They're supposed to boo
08:20Everybody to the left
08:22You're in the out-group
08:26All right
08:27Anybody who's sitting directly in the center
08:28is an individualized group
08:30You're in the out-group
08:32Everybody to my right
08:34You're in the out-group
08:37You can sing whatever you want
08:39Now, the part that the in-group sings
08:41is very simple
08:42The reason for that
08:43is that the in-group itself
08:44is very simple
08:51You sing
08:53You sing
08:54Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
08:56Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
08:58Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:01You repeat yourself
09:03because that is your way
09:06Then you come to the brilliant
09:07and startling conclusion
09:09Oh, rock my soul
09:10This is your part
09:12I'll sing it for you once
09:13and enjoy it with me
09:18You sing
09:19Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:22Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:26Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:30Oh, rockin' us
09:32Sing it again
09:33Sing it with me
09:34Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:37Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:41Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:45Oh, rockin' us
09:47Sing it again
09:49Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:53Rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
09:55That's enough
09:58Out-group
10:00Generally, you sing better than the in-group
10:04Right now, we're going to find out
10:05where this whole thing is at
10:07I understand your disapproval over there
10:08from them, but that's...
10:12Please don't do the same to them
10:14It's not necessary
10:15You'll get your chance
10:16Now
10:18You sing very differently
10:20because your attitude is cerebral
10:24and academic
10:25You begin, believe it or not
10:27by presenting your thesis
10:30So high
10:32I can't get over it
10:38Then you present its antithesis
10:41So low
10:42I can't get under it
10:47Stunned by the brilliance of this logic
10:51You present the new Hegelian dialectical synthesis
10:59So wide
11:00I can't get round it
11:03And then you end up perfectly logically
11:05by singing Oh, rock my soul
11:07This is your part
11:08I'll sing it for you once
11:13You sing so high
11:15I can't get over it
11:17So low
11:19I can't get under it
11:21So wide
11:23I can't get round it
11:25Oh, rockin' us
11:27Sing it again
11:28Sing it again now
11:29And so wide
11:31I can't get over it
11:33Rock my soul
11:35In the bosom of Abraham
11:37So wide
11:39I can't get round it
11:41Oh, rock your own part
11:43Sing it out now
11:44Rock my soul
11:46I can't get over it
11:48So low
11:50I can't get under it
11:52Rock my soul
11:54In the bosom of Abraham
11:56Oh, rockin' my soul
11:58Everybody sing rock my soul very softly now
12:01Rock my soul
12:03In the bosom of Abraham
12:05Rock my soul
12:07In the bosom of Abraham
12:09Rock my soul
12:11In the bosom of Abraham
12:13Oh, rockin' my
12:15The other part just as softly now
12:17So wide
12:19I can't get over it
12:21So low
12:23I can't get under it
12:25So wide
12:27I can't get round it
12:29Oh, rock the original parts now
12:32And rock my soul
12:34I can't get over it
12:36Rock my soul
12:38In the bosom of Abraham
12:40Rock my soul
12:42In the bosom of Abraham
12:44Oh, rock the switch parts now
12:47And rock my soul
12:49In the bosom of Abraham
12:51So low
12:53I can't get under it
12:55So wide
12:57I can't get round it
12:59Oh, rock the original parts
13:02Sing it out
13:03Rockin' my soul
13:05In the bosom of Abraham
13:07So low
13:09I can't get under it
13:11Rockin' my soul
13:13In the bosom of Abraham
13:15Oh, rockin' my soul
13:17There is a third part
13:20And I've been saving it
13:24I've been saving it for the bleachers
13:31You see, I think they feel neglected
13:36With good cause
13:38Your status is different due to the price differential
13:43Remember that?
13:46And for that reason, you have the most beautiful part of all
13:52It's called the wafting part
13:56Wafters
13:58This is your part
14:08Waft, waft, waft, waft, waft, waft, waft, waft
14:12Waft, waft, waft, waft, waft, waft
14:15This is your part
14:18Rock my soul
14:22Rock my soul
14:26Rock my soul
14:30Rock my soul
14:32Wafters, sing it with me
14:34Rock my soul
14:37That's very delicate
14:38Rock my
14:40A little louder
14:42Rock my soul
14:45Rock my
14:47Everybody sing the wafting part
14:49Rock my soul
14:52Rock my soul now
14:53Rock my
14:55Rock my soul now
14:57Rock my
14:59Rock my soul now
15:01Rock my
15:03Once again now
15:05Rock my
15:07Rock my soul now
15:09Rock my
15:11Rock my soul
15:13Oh
15:15Rock my soul now
15:17Rock my
15:19This is what we do
15:20In group, you sing your part
15:22When you come to the end of your part, you switch parts
15:27You keep switching back and forth
15:30Out group, you do exactly the same thing
15:32Starting with your part
15:33And wafters
15:35You waft
15:37Now, if anybody loses this place
15:41Waft
15:44After we've sung it four times through
15:46It's every man for himself
15:49There we go now
15:51Rock my soul
15:53And get over here
15:55Rock my wafters soul
15:58Rock my soul
16:02Rock my
16:04Rock my soul
16:06Rock my soul
16:08And get over here
16:10Rock my soul
16:12Do you go away for ever
16:14Rock my
16:16Rock my soul now
16:18Rock my
16:20Rock my soul
16:22Rock my soul
16:23Do you go away for ever
16:25I can get over here
16:30Rockin' my soul, singin' the bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy bluesy blues
17:00Rockin' my soul, all right
17:05Sing it with me now and rock my soul in the blues of my favorite
17:10Rock my soul in the blues of my favorite
17:13Rock my soul in the blues of my favorite
17:16All right, a rhythm of voice now and rockin' my soul
17:20In the blues of my favorite
17:22So low, I can't get over
17:25Rockin' my soul in the blues of my favorite
17:28Oh, rockin' on one more time and rock, rockin' my, rockin' my soul now
17:34Rockin' my, rockin' my soul now
17:37Rockin' my, rockin' my soul now
17:40Oh, rockin' the hell out of my soul
17:58Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
18:04Rockin' my soul in the blues of my favorite
18:09Rockin' my soul in the blues of my favorite
18:13Rockin' my soul in the blues of my favorite
18:19There is somebody that I'd like to bring to the stage that you know as a folk singer,
18:23stage that you know as a folk singer but you do not know Paul in his other role
18:28you have not met Paul in his other capacity you you haven't met Paul as
18:40you you haven't met Paul as
18:49Superman
18:53you know in truth Paul is a comedian with a unique point of view and
19:00commentary and in this capacity ladies and gentlemen join with me please in
19:06bringing to the stage my good friend my compatriot Paul Stuckey
19:23that was the sound of a golf ball or if you're a ping-pong enthusiast that was
19:43the sound of a ping-pong ball except generally you hear that sound
19:51that was the sound of a match between a golfer and a ping-pong enthusiast
20:02I've been trying to play golf I haven't had an opportunity to play on your
20:06courses yet actually it's a good thing because your courses at least the one
20:09that I saw was so close to the road actually I think you'd be very proud of
20:18me I haven't played that much
20:22four, five, six, seven, eight
20:26I don't like sports very much take surfing for instance listen in order to
20:43surf you really ought to know how to swim right I don't know how to swim you
20:49know what swimming is to me swimming is staying alive when I'm in the water
20:53I'll do anything I'll eat co2 cartridges
20:56I didn't come out here to talk about sports anyway I came to talk Peter talks
21:03about status about in groups and out groups well there's something in the
21:09States that has a great deal of status and shouldn't it's the automobile I
21:15don't know I don't think it means the same out here thank heavens in the
21:21States if you don't have an automobile by the time you're 14 or 15 years old
21:24you're dead you are you cannot call up a girl when you're that old and say hey
21:29listen how's about I pedal right over and pick you up
21:32don't go for that anyone so you gotta get the car now in order to get the car
21:36you got to be very buoyant you got to come down the stairs mom dad think I'll
21:42take the car out for a drive beautiful Sunday afternoon think I'll just whip
21:45right out there yeah yeah yeah and then they level you with that giant killer
21:52right you done your homework
21:59if you're very fast you'll say mom dad have I done my homework out the door
22:08you never lie to them you pick up three other great pretenders that's at three
22:14o'clock in the afternoon the time is now ten o'clock in the evening right the
22:20same four guys are in the same car driving
22:26well what do you want to do I don't know what do you want to do hey we've been
22:33driving for seven hours hey I got an idea
22:40let's go to a drive-in restaurant and look at the girls
22:47well here we are but they're all from our high school
22:50no there's one over there there's space right next to it let's pull up next to him
23:01don't look at them
23:10I don't know about the drive-ins that you have here but in the States they
23:19used to have little girls who would come out in short skirts to take your food
23:25order into the now you're lucky if you get your food delivered on a conveyor
23:28belt right sometimes you have to get it yourself but there was a time and there
23:32isn't a male in any audience that couldn't pull into a drive-in
23:36restaurant and feature himself as Don Juan
23:43and that little girl would come running out in the short skirt may I take your
23:49order sir yes but I don't believe it's on the menu
24:02they don't let you flirt anymore now you know what they let you do they let you
24:06push a little white button on a green box it's connected with a major
24:10communication system in the drive-in restaurant
24:17what you want you mean you want us to order
24:26okie-dokie we'll take one cheeseburger deluxe with everything on it and one
24:33hamburger medium rare what okay excuse me two hamburgers medium medium rare and
24:40one no hamburgers one hot dog and three chili burgers and and two shakes
24:48chocolate milkshakes really thick okay for spoons and two strawberry shakes
24:54sort of thin because we got a fell out here with chapped lips you know also he
25:00has a little hernia condition he can't quite get it through the straw you're
25:04wondering if he can water it down a little for him right no he'd like do you
25:10understand could you could you tell us what we've ordered please
25:18and four pints of beer we'll take it
25:42and after you get your food order in you cannot repeat you cannot get out of your
25:47car there was a time when you used to pull in drive-in restaurants and and
25:52used to get out and exchange pleasantries and greetings and hello
25:54evidently some people in the States were getting out and exchanging something a
25:57little heavier than pleasantries right so now they have policemen there to make
26:01sure you stay in your car you could be 47 years old and drop your wallet on the
26:05ground but officer at my credit card I don't care who you are kid back in the
26:08car if you do get out you got to be very careful because the new drive-in
26:12restaurants now have radar you got a crawl on your belly between the cars you
26:21get over next to the other car down here I can't come up they'll spot me put down
26:32your window whoo power windows huh this is a pretty classy car hey you're a
26:40pretty classy chick
26:57if you can't if you can get out of one of those restaurants without being named
27:01there's a sporting event taking place at the traffic light I'm not sure it's what
27:08you're thinking they're called drag races when they're done legally but I
27:15think they're called something obscene when they're done illegally there
27:19they're generally two characters involved one is mr. businessman who
27:23drives a four-door family sedan with black waddle tires automatic
27:26transmission and seated next to him in a 1941 Ford brown primer coated its rear
27:33end is two inches off the ground got tomato cans for mufflers with his back
27:38to the driver's windows left arm draped over the steering wheel the right hand
27:41gripped onto the gear shift lever sits the kid
27:52well mr. businessman has just had his bands tight and he goes if you're not
27:59quite sure what bands are the bands are the rings in an automatic transmission
28:03whereby the actual gear change is affected I'll give you an example this
28:09is an automobile with tight bands shifting
28:17this is an automobile with loose bands shifting
28:27well mr. businessman had just had his bands tight and he thinks that he will
28:32meanwhile the kid has inched these two fingers up over his left arm these two
28:41fingers of the universal sign language among teenagers for dragging you
28:45probably recall Winston Churchill during the war years which which everyone
28:50assumed meant to be for victories actually if you'll also recall Winston
28:55Churchill smokes a cigar right which he would hold in here and occasionally he
29:01turned to his friends on the platform and he'd say you want to drag mate
29:15the light changes to amber and mr. businessman decides to get very daring
29:19he pulled the automatic transmission down into low he puts one foot on the
29:24brake puts the other foot on the accelerator and still holding the foot
29:28on the brake in order to get that extra fast starter he pushes down an
29:32accelerator five inches
29:38the car is internally hemorrhaging
29:43he knows he knows he's gonna have to have another band job he is not gonna
29:48let the kid show him up the light changes to green and mr. businessman is
29:53he looks down the speedometer is 80 90 95 96 97 miles an hour he looks outside
30:04the window the kids not even there you know it's there
30:09he looks in the rearview mirror and the kids still back at the corner he never
30:13races anybody just sits there and scares the hell out of them
30:22join with me now I'm bringing to the stage a young lady whose name is always
30:30appears last whenever you see us or you hear us together but who's always first
30:35in the minds of all men ladies and gentlemen miss Mary Ellen Travis
30:52I wish I was a single girl again
31:04now I am a married girl go ragged all the time
31:10I wish I was a single girl again
31:16I wish I was a single girl again
31:23when I was a single girl
31:26had shoes of the very best kind
31:29now I am a married girl
31:32go barefoot all the time
31:36I wish I was a single girl again
31:42I wish I was a single girl again
31:49when I was a single girl
31:52used to go to the store and buy
31:55now I am a married girl
31:58just to rock that cradle and cry
32:02I wish I was a single girl again
32:08I wish I was a single girl again
32:14when a fella comes a-porting you
32:18sits you on his knee
32:21keep your eye upon the sparrow
32:25who flits from tree to tree
32:28and I never wish you were a single girl
32:31like me
32:34you'll never wish you were a single girl
32:38like me
32:41I wish I was a single girl again
32:50applause
33:21there is a ship
33:25and she sails the sea
33:30she's loaded deep
33:35as deep can be
33:40but not as deep
33:45as the love I'm in
33:50I know not if
33:55I sink or swim
34:00I lean my back
34:05against an oak
34:10thinking it was
34:14a trusty tree
34:19but first it bent
34:24and then it broke
34:29just as my love
34:34proved false to me
34:39love is gentle
34:43and love is kind
34:48the sweetest flower
34:53when first it's new
34:58but love grows old
35:03and waxes cold
35:07and fades away
35:12like the morning dew
35:17no other is why
35:22I cannot get old
