Labour MP Richard Burgon re-elected in Leeds East with considerable majority

Labour’s Richard Burgon has been re-elected in Leeds East with a solid majority.  Mr Burgon, who has held the seat since 2015, secured the win with 18,610 votes, beating the Reform UK candidate David Dresser who was in second place with 7,345 votes.

00:00I want to start off by thanking my agent Alex Raymond for the excellent job he's done and I want to, from the bottom of my heart,

00:09thank every single Labour Party activist and supporter in the New Leeds constituency who gave up their time in all weathers

00:19to help me be elected to continue representing our community in Parliament.

00:28What we've seen is a total rejection of the last 14 years of austerity, scapegoating, nasty politics, running down of our National Health Service

00:42and belittling of political decency in our country.

00:47The Conservative Party has been rejected by the people across this country

00:53and the people of Leeds East have rejected the Conservative Party as well,

00:58with the worst result for the Conservative Party in the history of the Leeds East constituency.

01:05And so people in Parliament, those of them remaining from the Conservative Party, need to listen.

01:15They need to listen because Britain deserves better.

01:18And it's broken my heart when I've seen the way people in Leeds East have been treated by this Conservative Party,

01:25the way that our public services have been treated.

01:28And it's no wonder that people in Leeds East and across the country have said enough is enough.

01:34And I want to make this promise to all Leeds East constituents, whether or not you voted for me.

01:42In this new Leeds East constituency, I'll be proud to work diligently for you and raise your concerns in Parliament,

01:51whether you live in Gipton and Hare Hills, in Crossgates and Wynmore, in Killingbeck and Seacroft, in Colton or in Garforth and Swillington,

02:04which we now welcome to the Leeds East constituency.

02:08I'm determined to be a hard-working MP for every single community in the diverse constituency that is a new Leeds East constituency.

02:19So from the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody who's taken part in this important democratic process.

02:26But when we look at the wreckage that's been left of our public services and living standards by this nasty Conservative government,

02:36it's clear that there is work to do. There's work to do.

02:40So let's get on with that work and build a brighter, better future for every single person in Leeds East and across the country.

02:49We need change. People have voted for change. Let's get on with the work. Thank you.
