Glasgow hospice receives donation of beehives

Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston has been given bee hives by local hotel groups. Honey harvested will be given to patients and sold in the gift shop with proceeds going back into the charity.

00:00So here we are at the official handover of beehives donated to the Prince and Princess

00:04of Wales Hospice in Bella Houston Park by IHG Scotland who run the Voco Grand Central Hotel.

00:10The beehives will be kept in a wildflower field on the grounds and maintained by a

00:14professional beekeeper. The honey that is produced will not only be given to patients of the hospice

00:19but it will be packaged up and sold in the gift shop with all proceeds to go back into the

00:23charity. The money will directly contribute to care and the running costs of the building.

00:27Raw organic honey contains a variety of plant chemicals and nutritional content that has

00:33historically been used for medical purposes. So not only are the hives producing a delicious

00:38treat for patients but also a food that is immune boosting, high in antioxidants with

00:43anti-inflammatory properties and a source of vitamins and amino acids. The hospice opened

00:48on the grounds in 2018 delivering palliative care to people in Glasgow facing terminal illnesses

00:54and support to their family members. The exterior and interior are visually beautiful

01:00inspired by Scandinavian style architecture and design which is known for its neutral and

01:05calm colour palettes and use of natural materials. It is a warm bright environment with accessibility

01:11to outside areas throughout the building. All care provided is financed by the charity's

01:16fundraising efforts and that of their supporters through selling donated items in their clothing

01:21and furniture shops, through events and challenges, gifts and donations. The honey that is to be sold

01:28will now contribute to this. The gift shop near the entrance of the hospice is open to the public

01:34and thus can be purchased by anyone.
