Supermarket Sainsbury’s has notched up a rise in first-quarter sales as solid grocery demand offset ongoing weak trading across its general merchandise and Argos businesses.

The supermarket Sainsbury's has notched up a rise in first quarter sales

as solid grocery demand offset ongoing weak trading across its general merchandise and Argos businesses.

The chain reported a 2.7% rise in like-for-like sales, excluding fuel,

in the 16 weeks to June 22nd, with total grocery sales up by 4.8%.

Total general merchandise sales fell by 4.3% amid a hit from bad weather,

while sales in the Argos business dropped by 6.2% due to weaker demand for consumer electronics and gaming products.
