00:00Thank you so much, Mr. Chairman, for allowing me to take part in this motion of thanks on
00:12the President's address.
00:14Well, it is with a great joy that I stand here on behalf of each and every soul that
00:22of one shalong parliamentary seat, who have supported me and who have enabled me to stand
00:30in this great institution and to speak almost at the last hour of the day.
00:41Mr. Chairman, I just want to remind myself, to remind the members of this 18th Lok Sabha
00:48and also the rest of, and the people of this country, that nothing is impossible with God.
00:55Why I say this is because of the fact that I belong to a party which we started just
01:02less than three years ago.
01:04And it is a party which fought the election without money, a party that fought against
01:12corruption, a party that stands for clean politics, good governance, honesty, and for
01:22the protection of the rights of the indigenous people, and also to uphold the constitution
01:28of this great nation, to ensure secularism, pluralism, federalism, that these are the
01:38tenets of our great nation prevail.
01:43So King Solomon the Great said these words, that a nation without a vision will perish.
01:54Well, I was very delighted to hear the words futuristic, the words vision, in the address
02:04by the Honorable President.
02:08While I was patiently waiting for, you know, what is the future, what is the vision of
02:17the President's address, as a first-time MP, I was listening patiently to hear where the
02:26government will take the nation, how the government will take it, but unfortunately I did not
02:33get much except for the achievement that the government in the past has accomplished.
02:42Well, I wish that the government will be more explicit in its endeavor.
02:49Mr. Chairman, while mentioning the lasting peace in the Northeast, as spelled out in
02:59the Presidential Address, I would like to remind the government of the day, and also
03:05the government of the past, led by the Congress government, that our people, my people, living
03:13especially in the border with Assam, in the border with Bangladesh, I tell you, till today,
03:20they don't feel safe at all.
03:23They feel very threatened, and what is even sad is that the lands have been taken away
03:30from them, they've lost their livelihood.
03:33Why?
03:34Because of the failure of subsequent governments to settle this dispute, which has been there
03:42for many, many years.
03:46We talk about development of the nation.
03:50That is dependent on the development of the states.
03:53That is what even our Honorable Prime Minister said, these words.
03:58Now how can we talk of development when people, till today, till this very moment, are yearning
04:07for peace?
04:08I therefore urge the governments to kindly take up this matter seriously, and I wish
04:16and I hope that the Prime Minister himself will take the lead in putting an end to this
04:24long-pending issue in the interests of our great nation in general, and in the interests
04:32of my people, especially those living in the border areas.
04:37Mr. Chairman, there is a saying that small is beautiful.
04:42Well, I am proud to stand here to represent one of the most beautiful people living in
04:51the far part of, in the eastern part of this great nation, called the Khasis.
04:58I am also coming from one of the most beautiful places on earth.
05:04Mr. Chairman, I urge and I call upon the governments, and also the members of this August House,
05:15to play a role in enriching and promoting the culture of my people, especially when
05:27we talk of culture, language is one of the important elements.
05:32For many years we have been demanding for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the
05:38aid schedule.
05:40I hope, with the support of members, that one day, just like while I was sitting here
05:49you know, from day one, hearing our friends speaking their own language, how I wish that
05:57one day, very soon, that you will also get to hear the language that I speak, the Khasi
06:07language.
06:09And I hope that the government, members in the opposition, would support this, the inclusion
06:18of the Khasi language in the aid schedule.
06:23Okay, sir.
06:24Kindly conclude, sir.
06:25Well, the government talks about development.
06:29Let me remind this house that Shillong, or rather Meghalaya, is one of the famous tourist
06:37destinations.
06:38And while talking to friends outside in the corridor, when they ask me where do I come
06:44from, I say, I come from Shillong.
06:46Oh, Shillong is a very beautiful place.
06:49I hope members who have never visited Shillong or Meghalaya for that matter, would one day
06:54make it a point to visit Meghalaya.
06:58But the sad part is that Meghalaya is now almost 52 years old.
07:04Unfortunately, till today, while we have an airport, but an airport which is not where
07:14big planes cannot land.
07:17Even though the fact remains that Shillong, or rather Meghalaya, tourism has so much potential.
07:28Thank you, sir.
07:29Please continue.
07:30Let me finish, sir.
07:31This is my maiden speech.
07:32I'll just take a few more points.
07:34I just hope that the government, the concerned ministry, would help the state to ensure that
07:44this airport is an airport where large planes can land.
07:51And finally, sir, we've been talking a lot about the leakage, the exams.
07:59I would like to draw the attention of the members of this house that there's another
08:06important issue which I feel, as members, we should take and look at it seriously.
08:14While designing the policy, you know, like the CET meet for our youth, what I want to
08:22say here, sir, is that before we do, we come up with such policy, I think it's very important
08:28to ensure that there is, that the centers are adequate, or the adequacy of the test
08:36center.
08:37Otherwise, what is happening to, I'm a teacher.
08:41It pains me when I come across students who have to put a stop to the career for the simple
08:49fact that they have to travel to far off places.
08:53Thank you, sir.
08:54And of course, there is no test center in their place.
08:58But I hope that the government, while coming up with such policy, do keep this also in
09:03mind, to set up centers at every block, which would be a great asset to the, you know, to
09:12the state and also the nation as a whole.
09:15Last but not the least, let me just end up with this quote, sir, that I call upon this,
09:21you know, the members of this house.
09:23Let us rise up, as Nehemiah said, let us rise up and build.
09:30Let us rise up above party politics.
09:33Let us rise up above, you know, caste, religion and creed, and let us build this nation.
09:38If we want to see India, I would request each of them remember to rise up and build this
09:46great nation.
09:47Thank you so much, sir.
09:48Thank you.
