We request the government of Pakistan to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
00:05
We will learn more about the press conference of U.S. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs,
00:09
Mr. Vedant Patel, in this briefing.
00:11
Jahanzeb Ali, Jahanzeb.
00:16
Look, the U.S. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Vedant Patel,
00:20
was asked questions about the Pakistan-U.S. agreement in the U.S. Congress.
00:24
And he was also asked,
00:26
has the Bani PTI been declared illegal as part of the Working Group?
00:32
What will the U.S. administration say about this?
00:34
So, on this, Mr. Vedant Patel said,
00:36
Bani PTI cases are an internal matter of Pakistan,
00:39
and only they can talk about it in a better way.
00:42
Mr. Vedant Patel also said,
00:44
we will not talk about the legalization of the Congress.
00:47
In our democratic system, the Congress is a separate branch of the government.
00:51
But he said that when it comes to Pakistan,
00:53
our Supreme Leader, Tony Blinken,
00:57
Assistant Secretary of State, Donald Lu,
01:00
and Secretary of State, Donald Bloom,
01:02
have continuously emphasized on Pakistan,
01:05
on a personal and public level,
01:07
that it should respect its people's rights
01:09
according to its own laws and international laws.
01:12
He said, we Pakistanis emphasize
01:14
that it should also respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
01:19
He said that, of course,
01:21
we should also have the right to gather in a peaceful manner.
01:25
He also said, I also asked him,
01:27
that the U.S. government has also expressed its concern
01:30
about the elections in Pakistan.
01:33
And it had asked for facts.
01:35
Is the U.S. still on its side?
01:38
So, Mr. Vedant Patel said,
01:39
that the issue of elections in Pakistan
01:41
will continue to be raised with the Pakistanis.
01:44
And the issue of elections in Pakistan
01:46
is still the focus of the U.S. attention.
01:49
He also said, that Pakistan and India
01:51
have to resolve their own issues.
01:53
If the U.S. talks with neighboring countries,
01:55
it will lose its confidence.
01:57
Thank you very much, Mr. Janzeb.
02:19
Secretary Blinken, Assistant Secretary Liu, Ambassador Bloom,
02:22
we have consistently and privately and publicly urged Pakistan
02:26
to respect the rights of its people
02:28
in line with its constitution and international commitments.
02:31
And we urge the government of Pakistan
02:33
to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms,
02:36
including the freedom of expression,
02:38
freedom of association, peaceful assembly,
02:40
and the freedom of religion.
02:42
Regarding Pakistan, please correct me if I'm wrong,
02:45
State Department also raised the same questions
02:47
regarding the credibility of Pakistani elections
02:49
held in Feb this year,
02:51
and asking for the investigation of reports
02:54
from massive rigging in those elections.
02:57
You're still asking those questions
02:59
from the Pakistani government?
03:01
This is something that we have continued to raise
03:03
with our partners in Pakistan.
03:05
Yes, that continues to be an area of focus of ours.
03:09
The Department of Homeland Security
03:11
has identified over 400 immigrants
03:13
from Central Asia and other regions
03:15
as subjects of concern due to their entry into the U.S.
03:18
through an ISIS-linked human smuggling network.
03:21
What measures are being taken to mitigate this threat
03:23
and ensure national security?
03:25
So we're aware of this report, and this is something
03:27
that my colleagues at the Department of Homeland Security
03:29
can speak to in more detail.
03:31
Let me just say, though, that we work very closely
03:35
with international counterparts,
03:37
including our partners in Central Asia,
03:39
on issues like counterterrorism partnerships,
03:42
exchange information on potential threats,
03:44
as well as improving screening capabilities.
03:47
Would you say something about the multiple bombings in Nigeria,
03:52
like more than 50 people dead, more than 100 are injured?
03:56
So we condemn this horrific attack
03:58
that took place in Borno on June 29th.
04:01
These attacks show a disregard of human life
04:04
and a reminder of the ongoing threat
04:06
posed by terrorism in the region.
04:08
We offer our condolences to the families of those killed
04:11
and wish a full recovery to those who were injured.
04:14
We would hope that any country on the face of the planet
04:17
condemns terrorism anywhere,
04:19
but ultimately this is between India and Pakistan.
04:24
Broadly, of course, we welcome any countries
04:29
making more positive relations with their neighbors,
04:32
but as it relates to this specifically,
04:34
I just don't have anything to offer.
04:36
I let the United Nations offer any clarity
04:38
on the comments that they've provided,
04:40
and in the case of Mr. Khan,
04:42
you've heard us say this before,
04:44
this is an internal matter for Pakistan.
04:46
I don't have any assessment to offer from here.
