00:00Good evening and welcome along to Invictus Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated
00:19to wrapping up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Abbey Hooke and here's what to expect
00:24on this Monday the 1st of July.
00:27Back on track, England scrape through, but are Kent fans still backing them to lift the
00:31trophy?
00:33Climbing to Paris, sitting born youngster becomes the latest Kent athlete at this year's
00:38Olympics.
00:39And team tryouts, our reporter Finn gives golf a swing ahead of the Open.
00:46As always we'll start with a round up of the headlines and only one story has been dominating
00:51the back and front pages today and that is of course England's last gasp scrape through
00:56to the quarter finals of Euro 2024.
00:59But despite the elation, can it still come home?
01:03We've been speaking to England fans in Rochester to see if they think England can win the tournament.
01:08Oh definitely.
01:09Well definitely.
01:10They've got to.
01:11They've got to.
01:12They've definitely got to.
01:13No.
01:14Not really.
01:15Not sure.
01:16I'm not sure.
01:17The way they played yesterday, you didn't think they had a chance until, you know, the
01:21last minute of the match. So yeah, it's difficult. You can't predict with them.
01:26They're not playing together.
01:29They're not playing as a team.
01:31That is the problem.
01:33Individual talent.
01:35No team working.
01:37If you'd watch the game afterwards, fabulous.
01:44The Spanish team, everything, passing, crisp, not England.
01:49What do you make of Gareth Southgate, the manager?
01:53He's a smashing guy.
01:55But he's not strong enough.
01:56So you've got no hope for the coming weeks then?
01:59No.
02:00Unless they change their pattern of play.
02:03I think that we should always have hope and believe in our country.
02:08They pulled it out of the bag in the end, however, they don't look like they want it,
02:15which I think is hard for us England fans to watch.
02:18It doesn't seem as if they want it.
02:19It doesn't look like they're fighting for it.
02:21They were awful.
02:22But they got the result in the end, didn't they?
02:27Very lucky.
02:28And they really do need to up their game.
02:30Do you think they can still win the Euros?
02:33I just don't think we can.
02:35I've got no confidence in them.
02:39Some mixed reviews from Rochester today, but still keeping that hope alive.
02:43Next tonight, Maidstone boxer Sean Noakes, who has secured a chance at becoming English
02:47welterweight champion in just his eighth fight.
02:50The undefeated fighter is set to face southern area champion Inder Bassi at the O2 arena
02:55on the 27th of July.
02:56He'll be boxing on the undercard of the big domestic clash between Joe Joyce and Derek
03:01Chisora.
03:02Noakes says it's a good step up, but he's confident of a win.
03:05It comes after the fighter recently returned to his old amateur boxing club, Westry ABC,
03:10where he handed out and signed Team Noakes t-shirts to the youngsters there.
03:15It's day two of Kent's county championship meeting with Hampshire, where Kents are hoping
03:19for a much-needed win.
03:21It comes after our county's side have brought on Essex backsman Feroze Koushi on loan from
03:26the next few weeks following injuries and Zach Crawley being unavailable with England.
03:31After a slow first day on Sunday, Kent failed to make the most of a good start after three
03:36wickets were taken for just 56 runs, whilst on day two, Hampshire were able to end their
03:41innings after declaring 505 for 8.
03:44Kent are now chasing down 360 with six wickets remaining.
03:49From gymnastics to athletics, swimming to archery, there's really not long to go until
03:53Kent will be sitting down to watch some of the most popular sports at this year's Parix
03:57Olympics.
03:58But how much are you looking forward to bouldering?
04:00It's actually one of the newest sports of the Games, first debuting at Tokyo.
04:05One person looking forward to the event is Sittingbourne's Erin McNeice.
04:09That's because she's been selected to take part and represent Team GB.
04:13I caught up with her earlier and started by asking how it feels to become an Olympian.
04:19The past week's been pretty surreal.
04:21I think it's only just starting to sink in that I'm going to the Olympics.
04:27And yes, I've sort of tried to, coming into the comp, I tried to focus on my climbing.
04:36So now that I'm able to think about the result, it feels crazy.
04:41And you're so young as well, and the sport's so new too, only introduced for the first
04:45time in the last Olympics in Tokyo.
04:47How important do you think it is that the sport of bouldering, we'll come on to exactly
04:50what that is in a moment, but that it's recognised?
04:55It's really important.
04:56I think the last Olympics was the first time it was in, so it brought a lot of attention
05:01to the sport.
05:02And even now, the effect that that has had is being obvious to me as someone who's already
05:10in the sport.
05:11And I think it's really nice that it's bringing more people in because I've done so many sports
05:16and it's been by far my favourite.
05:19And watching it at the last Olympics, did that inspire you now?
05:22Do you feel like you're following right in some of your hero's footsteps, I suppose?
05:27Yeah, I remember watching Shauna Coxsey at the last Olympics.
05:32She climbed for Great Britain, and that was really inspiring for me.
05:37And I'm really happy that I get to go and do that with a bunch of people this Olympics
05:44who I think have inspired me and I think that they're so deserving to be there that I'm
05:51honoured to take that stage with them.
05:55And there are actually a few different parts to bouldering and climbing as a sport in the
05:58Olympics.
05:59It's done differently, different types of racing.
06:01So can you explain how bouldering is different and what exactly you're trying to achieve
06:05every time you go to do your sport, to participate in a race?
06:11Yeah, so climbing the first time in Tokyo, the Olympics was speed climbing, bouldering
06:19and leading.
06:20Speed, obviously, it's like a 15 metre wall and it's the fastest person to get out of
06:26their wins.
06:27And bouldering is like a five metre wall, really hard, like six moves, six to eight
06:33moves really hard.
06:35And then lead climbing's 15 metre wall, sort of more endurance based and the farthest you
06:42can get up basically.
06:44Now it's been separated.
06:46So speed climbing is completely separate in this Olympics and I'll be competing in combined,
06:51which is boulder and lead.
06:53And with a potential Olympic medal on the horizon for you, what's training been like?
06:57How does it change?
06:59It's definitely different now compared to the winter.
07:04The winter was like seven to nine hours, so I'm not necessarily going to be doing that
07:10much volume, but definitely it's gone back up to sort of like six to seven hours a day.
07:17And then I'll probably have a bit of a deload for the Olympics so that I'm feeling fresh.
07:22It sounds like a really silly question to ask, but what are you going for?
07:25Going for gold?
07:27I don't know.
07:31I think I'll just focus on the performance and making sure that I'm in a good mindset
07:37to perform.
07:38And normally the result will come from that.
07:40I've only really just started getting these like really good results, so I don't know.
07:46A final would be really cool, but I think if I focus on my climbing, then the result
07:51will come from that.
07:52And what about a lasting message, I suppose, for young people watching this thinking that
07:55I want to get into a sport, go all the way to the Olympics and for something so unique
08:00as well.
08:01What would be your message?
08:02I'd say if you're passionate about it and you enjoy it, then just go and enjoy it further.
08:12And obviously there are parts of training that I don't like as much as others, but on
08:18the whole, I enjoy it so much.
08:21If you use what you enjoy as a tool, then it makes it a lot easier to work hard.
08:27And yeah, the most important part is enjoying the journey.
08:30If you're not enjoying it, then there's no point in doing it.
08:34So just smile and have fun.
08:36Enjoy the whole experience.
08:37Erin, that's a lovely message.
08:39And we wish you the very best of luck here from Invicta Sport, the whole KMTV team.
08:43I'm sure we'll be following you closely and seeing how you get on at the Olympics.
08:47Thank you so much for your time today.
08:50Thank you for having me.
08:52Next tonight, a team of 30 have cycled all the way from Ellesford to Belgium, and it's
08:57all for Armed Forces Week.
08:59Henry Luck has more.
09:02And they're off.
09:04It's that time of year again for Royal British Legion Industries to host their special Ride
09:09with a Veteran fundraiser that will raise money to support former servicemen and their
09:15families during Armed Forces Week.
09:18Well, as you can see behind me, all these cyclists here are ready to brave a two-day
09:23trek right here from the RBLI all the way to Belgium, which is just over a staggering
09:31170 kilometres.
09:34The team of 30 cyclists will be travelling towards the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium
09:40to deliver a wraith to remember the fallen.
09:43This event in particular gives us the opportunity to take some veterans with us.
09:47And they're taking part in the challenge as well, so it's a really big thing for them.
09:51And it gives them a chance for others to see what they're doing.
09:54It isn't just veterans riding with us today.
09:57We have a whole scope of people from corporates who have kindly also sponsored the event to
10:02members of the general public as well who just want to support our work.
10:06The honour of placing the wraith will be held by first-time participant veteran Vinod Budadhokhi.
10:12He will be taking part with his friend Trifraj Tappa.
10:17They both served in the Gurkhas and are leg amputees because of an IED explosion while
10:23serving in Afghanistan back in 2010.
10:27Vinod is able to take part using a hand bike.
10:31It's a ride with the veterans, a cycle ride to raise the funds for the veterans and help
10:39those who are in need.
10:43It is a hand bike.
10:46You have got a three-wheel one at the front, which gets power, and a rear two-wheel.
10:55It's absolutely a wonderful bike, and I'm riding this bike since ten years now.
11:05The main sponsor this year is Chemring Countermeasures, who also help veterans transition back to
11:12civilian life.
11:13For me, it's extremely rewarding, not only for the cycle ride and meeting lots of new
11:19people, but actually cycling amongst the veterans.
11:21They're inspiring some of the people we meet, meeting a lot of different people, understand
11:26their stories, understand their achievements, and it's something we can do for a bit of
11:31fun and pleasure, supporting them as they ride through the ride.
11:36It's a long road ahead for these cyclists, aiming to get to Ypres in time for Armed Forces
11:42Day on the 29th of June.
11:45Henry Luck for KMTV in Aylesford.
11:49An impressive cycle for sure.
11:51That's what we've got time for, half-time we've reached, but see you in a few minutes.
15:07Hello and welcome back to Invicta Sport, live here on KMTV.
15:13It's been a return to training for Gillingham today.
15:17Nine weeks on from the end of what was a disappointing end of the 23-24 League Two season, crunch
15:22time begins as new manager Mark Bonner will now begin putting his plans into practice.
15:28The first hurdle of the pre-season will be a visit from former manager Neil Harris when
15:32he brings his Millwall side to town on the 13th of July, with another championship side,
15:37Watford, visiting the following weekend.
15:39It comes after Ligue 1 Crawley Town have announced the transfer of Scott Malone, who was one
15:43of four players that Gillingham made available for transfer this summer.
15:48Last week the fixtures for the upcoming League Two season were released, with Gillingham due
15:52to open things with a home match against newly relegated Carlisle United.
15:57Meanwhile, former boss Stephen Clements will return to Priestfield in September as Barrow
16:02head coach.
16:03Bartholomew caught up with David Garth from the Gillingham FC Supporters Club to get his
16:07reaction to the list.
16:09David joins me now.
16:10David, thank you very much for being here.
16:11Welcome back onto the programme.
16:12Another year, very, very quickly approaching.
16:16Starting at home for Gillingham this season, Carlisle United making the trip.
16:21Always nice to start the season at home, right?
16:23Yeah, it is.
16:24And I'm glad it's us entertaining Carlisle, not them entertaining us, of course.
16:30It's a long way for us if we had to go that way.
16:32Well, of course, Carlisle, newly relegated, so they'll be wanting to make a mark, wanting
16:37to start their season off on a good mark.
16:40But then as well, Gillingham will be as well.
16:42What do you make of them as being the first opponents?
16:44Yeah, I mean, I don't know so much about them now.
16:49I didn't really follow them last season, but obviously they had a pretty awful time.
16:55They'll be very keen to get going early, but so will we.
16:59But you've got to fancy Gillingham at the moment, I think, just given the amount of
17:03good players that we've signed already.
17:05Absolutely.
17:06And in terms of kind of first impressions, of course, we're going to see some pre-season
17:10friendlies this summer.
17:11But in terms of competitive play, Mark Bonner will be hoping to make a really good first
17:15impression with his new squad, of course.
17:19Oh, absolutely.
17:20Yeah.
17:21And if you look at the fixtures, of course, after that first game, we've got two long
17:25trips in a row to two grounds that are about 10 miles apart, and then the following Saturday
17:32we're away to Fleetwood.
17:33So it's a pretty sort of long distance start to the season all round, to be honest.
17:38Well, I mean, it's interesting you say that, because I think Gillingham, being in the geography
17:42of the southeast, there's not many teams in the Football League at all here.
17:45Obviously, there was Crawley last season.
17:47But one team that is joining, and I think it is Bromley, of course.
17:51I think some people maybe debate over whether or not they count as Kent.
17:54I would say they're South London.
17:55But one thing's for sure, lots of people will say that this counts as a derby.
18:00This is a southeast derby.
18:02What do you think about Bromley joining League Two?
18:04Yeah, I mean, it's good.
18:07Yeah, I think for the older people around, including myself, Bromley was in Kent until
18:12they nicked it.
18:13So we've got them early December.
18:16And then, of course, we've got them on New Year's Day at home.
18:19So it's going to be interesting.
18:21I don't think they're going to have very many tickets for Gillingham fans to go to Bromley.
18:26I've heard rumours of less than 500.
18:29So they're going to be snapped up.
18:30It's going to be a very interesting time.
18:32I think so, definitely.
18:34One thing we should talk about, of course, is Stephen Clements.
18:36Since we last spoke, he's now got a new job, still in League Two with Barrow, of course.
18:41He'll be returning to Priestfield at the end of September.
18:43Will that be a kind of welcome for him back to Priestfield?
18:47It was quite a kind of positive end, I suppose.
18:50He put out that statement when he did leave the club, saying it was quite a heartfelt
18:55goodbye.
18:56Quite a lot of thanks he had for Gillingham.
18:58Yeah, I think I certainly will wish him well, apart from when he plays us, of course.
19:04And he'll have Connor Mahoney in the side, who did very well for Gillingham last season.
19:09And there were strong rumours that he would be coming back.
19:12But obviously, with Gillingham signing Reeves, then that, I think, was obviously not going
19:18to happen.
19:19But, yeah, I'm sure he'll get a good reception from most fans.
19:24But let's hope they get the three points, of course.
19:26Absolutely.
19:27I think, yeah, you mentioned the still there of Connor Mahoney.
19:31Lots of people expecting him to still stay at Gillingham.
19:33But what have you made of some of the other signings this summer so far?
19:38No real headline grabbers, but there's still a few weeks left.
19:42I'm very excited, actually.
19:44When you look at Elliot Nevitt, he's a very good striker.
19:48His goal record speaks for itself.
19:51He came into the game quite late on, so he's very hungry.
19:54And I think that that will work very well with Gillingham.
19:58And I'm sure that him and Josh Andrews can work together.
20:02Maybe the most exciting player is going to be Jack Nolan on the wing.
20:07He scored, I think, it's about 17 goals, but he also made over a dozen assists last
20:13season.
20:14And we're going to have an attacking side.
20:16So maybe the philosophy will be that we're going to outscore the opposition.
20:19So bring it on, really.
20:21Back to the fixtures, just to finish things off.
20:23The last home game will be against Swindon, obviously Swindon Town, longtime rivals of
20:28Gillingham.
20:29We know what the goal is of Gillingham this season.
20:32How would it feel to secure that promotion against Swindon at home on a lovely sunny
20:37April afternoon?
20:38Yeah, it would be wonderful.
20:42It would really be, you know, icing on the cake time, to be honest.
20:46Whenever it comes, it will be special to get to get back into the league one, but against
20:51someone like Swindon, I think a lot of fans would enjoy that.
20:55Really would.
20:56Fantastic.
20:57Well, I'm looking forward to it.
20:58I'm sure you are as well.
20:59Thank you very much for joining us.
21:02You're welcome.
21:03Cheers.
21:04And you can get the full list of fixtures for Gillingham's season as well as lots of
21:08other written reports and features during the summer break by heading over to Kent Online.
21:12But did you also know you can have your weekly digest of Gilles' news sent directly into
21:17your email inbox?
21:18Just search Kent Online email alerts and sign up on the website for all the latest written

21:24And if the Gilles isn't your cup of tea, well, there's plenty more email alerts to choose
21:28from, including the latest non-league football news too.
21:33Now, it's time to remind you that you can keep up to date with all the latest sports
21:37news, interviews and features from here on Invictus Sport by heading over to our website
21:40KMTV.co.uk and clicking on the Sport tab.
21:44There you'll see videos like this one about a football squad.
21:48Bartholomew was lucky enough to go and meet in Folkestone, who won their league this year
21:51without losing a single match.
21:54Arsene Wenger's Invincibles, Xavi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen and Folkestone Invictus'
22:00under-13s.
22:01Three teams which have cemented themselves in their club's history books after becoming
22:05champions of their leagues by not losing a single match.
22:14With 14 wins and one draw, Folkestone had a 15-point lead by the tail end of the East
22:18Kent Youth League season this year.
22:21It's also their second championship win in a row, after winning Division Two and now
22:25Division One of the league.
22:27They're clearly the team to beat.
22:30But what sets them apart?
22:31Good teamwork.
22:32Good discipline.
22:33I think it's our togetherness as a team and I think obviously our coaching play, the way
22:38we play and obviously the players we brought in last season, it really helped us.
22:43All the team-up and the team build-up and all the goals that we score, it's just amazing
22:47to be fair.
22:48And after coming all the way out to set up a training session in the rain for our camera,
22:53it's clear this team's spirit and love for the game is just as unbreakable as their unbeaten
22:59record.
23:00Bartholomew Hall for KMTV in Folkestone.
23:05And finally this evening, with the sunny weather finally upon us and the Open approaching in
23:09the next few weeks, we thought it was time to brush up on our golf skills.
23:13Our reporter Finn McDermott, who has never played before, joined a professional on an
23:1718-hole course near Maidstone to try out his swing.
23:21Let's take a look at the latest in one of our favourite segments, Team Tryout.
23:26Golf is a sport like no other and since we have finally started to see signs of summer,
23:29I've decided to try to show off what it's like to tee off as a beginner.
23:33So I went to Bairsted Golf Club, which has been around since 1895 and is just outside
23:38of Maidstone.
23:40If you're like me, you're currently trying to reduce your blood pressure after seeing
23:43Gareth Southgate's attempts to push through the group stage at the Euros.
23:46Well I'm here at Bairsted to get some tips on what might be a steadier sport.
23:51The Open Championships are starting in July and I'm here to improve my swing with tips
23:55from a professional.
23:57Because golf is such a unique sport in that it's played with a set of clubs and a ball
24:01set from a motionless position, I needed someone special to show me the ropes.
24:06Meet Richard Fox, a golf professional and teacher who's been tasked with the challenge
24:10of getting my golf skills into full swing.
24:13Looking forward to being able to give you a little bit of a lesson, tell you all about
24:16it, try and get you to love the game that I love and basically understand where we're
24:20going.
24:21I mean the thing about golf that we're trying to do really is try to explain to people it's
24:25a game for everybody so trying to lose the stigma as maybe it was and try and get everybody
24:29involved really.
24:30But as I say, it's all about having a bit of fun, seeing if it's the game for you, hopefully
24:35it will be, taking it further from there.
24:37So if we can, let's have a look at you and see where we go.
24:40He started off by introducing the key basics of the sport.
24:43This included getting the grip down.
24:44So again, left hand goes in, thumb point pretty much straight down, back of the left hand
24:49faces towards the target, stick the forefinger out, little finger slides in but only into
24:54the fingers and then you're going to come over the top so the right thumb touches, perfect.
24:59We'll just tweak this finger, just a little bit round, only because if you hit the ground
25:02that might give you a jarring sensation and we don't do pain in golf, or any men's
25:07golf.
25:08That's okay.
25:09My stance.
25:10From this position here, what we're going to do is say yeah, club's coming into the
25:12belt bucket area so we're just going to swing it nice and short, just feel comfortable and
25:17just see whether we can get you to do a little bit more ease.
25:20Okay, sure.
25:21And my swing.
25:22The same way as a thrower would work, or a racket sport player would work, what we're
25:27basically trying to do is turn to the right side, load the energy, turn to the left side
25:31and release the energy.
25:32And then from there, we're just going to try and get the club to do the work for us.
25:35Okay.
25:36Nice and easy.
25:37Yep.
25:38Let's give it a go.
25:39Rich explained to me that the new players simply tend to go for power over precision
25:43and the clean strike with the club, making sure that the bottom of the head gets a good
25:47connection with the bottom of the ball, is the most basic of building blocks for playing.
25:52Throughout the day, I noticed I had begun to hit more and more consistently until I
25:56was getting a decent enough connection to send the ball past the trees.
25:59Hope you enjoyed it.
